PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY ANDREW TOTH
T
he recent passing of my brother and the ensuing
trip home from Phoenix gave me a lot of
time to think about what we do with our time
on this planet. While my brother and I were as different
as a 914 and a 928, we shared the love of cars
and driving them hard. Like me, he was active in car
clubs, and always had time to talk cars.
While car clubs center around cars, they provide us so much more than
just a chance to look at exquisite hardware. They help us to experience
life in a unique way and build friendships through those experiences. "It's
not just the cars, it's the people" perfectly expresses the value of PCA and
other clubs like it.
I lived CC40 through email messages of Bob Gutjahr and Steve Kinsley.
Cheryl Taylor brought it all home with excellent pictures that captured the
essence of the day. Those pictures should be available on the web site by
the time you read this. But if you missed Challenge, the fun doesn't stop
there...there's more.
We have three more tours before the year is over: the Friendly Farms Fall
Foliage Tour, the Blackwater Refuge Tour, and the lights of Antietam
Tour. Each one is sure to be memorable. We also have two more autocross
events - one each at the Dorsey MARC lot and the Police Academy
Training Facility.
Each of these events are brought to you by the hard work of volunteers.
To keep them going, and to keep improving our offering to you, the members,
we need people to continue to volunteer. So if you have a few hours
to spare - it doesn't take many - I suggest you talk to the chair of an
event you enjoy. Ask if there is some way to help, regardless of how few
hours you may have offer. I'm sure your help would be welcomed. If you
can support the club with a little more time, consider filling one of the
open board positions, like Publicity, Sponsorship, or Treasurer.
Hope to see you at an event soon.
EDITOR’S CORNER BY JAN BORCHARDT
Doing the PATTER every month has become much more of a
Challenge than I expected when I took it on. Speaking of
Challenge, if you did not attend the 40th in Frederick, you
missed a great day in spite of the rain. Pictures and stories
from the event fill most of the pages of this months Patter. Everyone had
a great time looking at the cars and talking and shopping. Some people I
know are even going back for MORE shopping.
Back to reality. The time needed to prepare the Patter every month
has been preempted by getting my work situation into shape. Tele-
commuting takes a lot more time than I imagined, even though I
had previously been connected via T1 to servers in another state. I
remember when we all thought computers were fast. Now we ex-
pect them to do much more and complain when they seem slow.
Besides all the time for work, we have a future garage queen in the
works; restoration is progressing on our ‘63 356SC Sunroof
coupe— slowly, but surely.
Thanks for listening—See you at an upcoming event, I hope!
OCT 25TH ▪ FALL FOLIAGE FRIENDLY FARMS TOUR
EVERYONE is invited to join us for the FALL FOLIAGE FRIENDLY FARMS (NEW
ROUTE) drive & dine in Upperco MD. Sunday October 25th. The first drive to
Friendly Farms was led by Stuart Fine, I believe in 2003, and The Chesapeake
Region has continued with this popular location. This year a new route is charted
to make everything new and interesting for those that joined us for the previous
colorful drives. Located off Mt Carmel Rd. not far from Rt. 83, they have an as-
sorted variety of selections and desserts. We will meet at the Grauls supermarket
parking lot on Mt Carmel Rd just east of RT 83 at 9:30am and leave sharp at
10:00am. The restaurant will open at 11:15am, 45min earlier than usual to get
us checked in and seated. Check the web site http//friendlyfarm.net/ for selec-
tions, you won't be disappointed. Please e-mail Allen Gunzelman Tourmeister to
give us a head count at: Tours@pcachs.org
NOV 8TH BLACKWATER REFUGE TOUR
Members and guests! Sign up for the spectacular
fall drive thru Maryland's own nationally acclaimed
BLACKWATER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE on
the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland
(www.friendsofblackwater.org/) and dine after-
wards at the HYATT Resort in Cambridge MD.
Robert Vigorito, who organized this tour 4 years
ago is promising the same wonderful experience. On Sunday, November 8th,
Porsche families will gather at the Hyatt Resort in Cambridge, Md, at 9:30am and
leave for the Refuge at 10am. The migration of birds and other wildlife will pre-
sent great photo opportunities worthy of framing. We will end back at the Hyatt
Resort around 12:30pm, for lunch and conversation about beautiful sightings that
make memories. For those so inclined, Maryland's Eastern Shore offers great
sightseeing at the Refuge and many quaint waterfront towns like Oxford, St
Michaels & Cambridge for exploration after the lunch. Please let the Tourmeister
know ASAP if you plan to attend, and the car you will be driving.
UPCOMING EVENTS
DEC 5TH ▪ TOYS FOR TOTS LITERACY DRIVE
The beauty of the Toys for Tots Literacy Program is that each dollar donated pur-
chases a book for a needy boy or girl, inspiring them to learn through reading.
“When we worked with the Toys for Tots organization to create this year-round
effort, our hope was not only to put books into the hands of our most economi-
cally disadvantaged children, but also to raise awareness of a significant issue
facing our nation, an issue that has become even more critical in these economic
times,” said Stuart Mathis, president of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc., which franchises
The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. brands.
Our second Annual TOYS FOR TOTS LITERACY DRIVE has now been routed for
December 5th. Cars will gather at 9:30am near the BelAir Md Starbucks (620
Market Place Dr) adjacent to Barnes & Noble and Einsteins Bagels. The
shopping center is at Rt 1 & Rt 24. We will leave at 10am for a scenic
drive ending at Honeygo Village Center where donations to the Toys for
Tots Literacy Program can be made at THE UPS STORE. Receipts will ac-
knowledge monetary donations. Then lunch/happy hour at Libratore's
resturant. Porsche friendly parking will be provided. New, Unwrapped
Toys will also be accepted.
Please contact Allen Gunzelman,
EVENING OF DEC 5TH ▪ ANTIETAM ILLUMINATION
On Saturday evening December 5, 2009, Antietam National Battlefield will
host the Annual Antietam National Battlefield Memorial Illumination in
honor of the 23,000 soldiers who fell during the Battle of Antietam- the
single bloodiest day in the Civil War. This is one of the most unusual and
moving traditions during the holiday season in our area. The 23,000 illu-
minaries- one for each soldier- line the battlefield in rows and are a
PORSCHE PATTER ▪ OCTOBER 2009 ▪ Page 11

poignant reminder of the sacrifice of these brave soldiers who died on
September 17th, 1862. The driving tour through the park is approxi-
mately 5 miles long, and the spectacle of the luminaries is an experience
you will never forget. See information at this link: [http://www.nps.gov/
anti/planyourvisit/luminary.htm]
UPCOMING EVENTS
Although the Memorial Illumination is a tribute to our history, it is also a
tremendous venue for a Porsche Club of America tour. Our plan is to dine
and drive, providing attendees a memorable holiday dining experience at
one of area’s nicer restaurants and then touring the park in the later eve-
ning after the lines dissipate. We have selected the highly rated Comus
Inn at Sugarloaf Mountain [http://www.thecomusinn.com/] in Montgom-
ery County for its ambience and proximity to the battlefield. Check it out
at: We’ll meet at the Inn at 7:00 PM on 5 December, and then leave the
restaurant parking lot at 9:00 PM for the hour’s drive to the battlefield at
Sharpsburg. We will probably have to wait in line for 30 minutes or so to
enter the park. While we wind our way through the park, vehicles are to
use parking lights only, to the extent technology permits. If all goes well,
we should be done by 11:00 PM. Event brochures will be distributed at
the event entrance and contributions will also be accepted by the Park.
There will be more information forthcoming on this event as details un-
fold. Please note that while we encourage Porsches at this event, all ve-
hicles are welcome to accommodate families and friends who want to ex-
perience the lights. If you do not want to join us for dinner at the Inn,
please meet us at the parking lot at 9:00 PM for the tour. RSVPs for din-
ner at the Inn and/or just the tour is mandatory.
We must provide the Inn with a headcount by 1 December, so please
RSVP to Bob at silber_pfeile@yahoo.com by that date."
OCTOBER EVENTS
S E PTE M B E R 2 6 TH ▪ CC40 – ON THE BRICKS
by Joanie and Bob Purgason
If you didn’t believe that Porsches came
in all shapes, sizes and colors, then you
should have attended the 40 th Special
Edition of the Chesapeake Challenge on
the bricks. This year’s event was
chaired by Ellen Beck and Bob Gutjahr,
and was held in the Historic Frederick Everedy Square and Shab Row.
The date was September 26, 2009, and all that can be said is that it was
a perfectly planned and executed event, and who would have expected
less from these two experienced chair people. Colorful it was, historic it
was, enjoyed by all who attended, it was. The only minor downside was
something no one can control, the weather. At least the really bad part
did hold off until the Concours judging was finished. Even though the
Gimmick Rally was run in less than desirable conditions, it was still enjoyed
by all who selected that from their menu of activities. These included
the morning Concours/Car Show, the afternoon Rally, an early
evening Tech Quiz, and the optional dinner at the Frederick Cellars winery.
Almost a weekend of activities squeezed into one day.
Before going on with our CC40 description, we would like to salute the
volunteers who made this, and all events, so successful. Showing up
early at 7:00 AM, helping in all phases of the event from traffic control,
parking line up, registration, Concours set up and judging, designing the
rally, and event scoring. All of these special members deserve a big pat
on the back for what they do; because without them the rest of us could
not enjoy what we do, participate. Next time you see one of them, give
them that pat on the back and a big Thank You!
The cars were in all colors - red, orange, blue, silver, white, black and so
on. Grey skies sometime help to enhance colors and make them more
vivid, and that was a magic ingredient that helped all the cars look wonderful.
The shapes were impressive also, front engine, mid engine, and
the rear engine sorta dictate the shapes of our Porsches, and that’s always
unique to see. There was not one bad Porsche there (nor will you
PORSCHE PATTER ▪ OCTOBER 2009 ▪ Page 13
(Continued from page 13)
ever see a bad Porsche) and the close Concours judging proved that out.
We joined in with the others who decided to do the Concours, and it was
quite an experience. The competition was working hard to show their car
at their best, and we think everyone succeeded. It was interesting to find
out what products your competitors were using, it appeared to be a fairly
wide range, and we picked up some good tips for our next Concours.
For a first timer, the Concours can be both nerve-racking but fun at the
same time. You find yourself sweating - trying to anticipate what the
judges will be looking for is “Challenging” (no pun intended). And when
they’re finished with their judging, there’s a big sigh of relief. It’s over!
Whatever happens, happens! You will accept the outcome, and you will
learn how to do it better next time. You can generally tell the competitors
who have done this before; they’re cool and calm. You wish you
could be this way. Next time it will be easier, you keep telling yourself.
This years Concours and Car Show went smoothly and without a “glitch”,
thanks to chair Ron Gordon. The judging team moved from section to
section, and they handled themselves with calm and dignity. Boy, if only
we could be that calm and dignified. The final results proved that the
Chesapeake membership takes this event very seriously, and congratulations
go to all the winners. Concours and Car Show results are posted at
the end of this article.
The afternoon Rally was a back road tour of many local Frederick county
landmarks, but with a twist as well. You were looking for answers from
signs along the way, some easy and some difficult. Because of the
weather, it wasn’t exactly a “top down” day for our cabrio members, but
all cars got through the course in good time. Ending at the downtown
Frederick Cellars winery, everyone had smiles and good thoughts for the
Rallymaster, Steve Kinsley, who was ablely assisted by our own Jon Patterson.
Together they pulled off another terrific event within an event, so
congratulations to both of them. Rally results are also posted at the end
of this article.
The advertised “Porsche at the Movies” Tech Quiz proved to be a different
twist on a normal Porsche Tech Quiz. Everyone had an equal chance at
this one, but knowledge of Porsche appearances in various movies gave
PORSCHE PATTER ▪ OCTOBER 2009 ▪ Page 14
(Continued on page 15)

(Continued from page 14)
you the advantage. It tested you being able to distinguish models by
year, and your Porsche knowledge of things like where the color of the
911 that Steve McQueen was driving at the start of the movie “LeMans”
came from. I learned it was from a Bentley, but we still haven’t made the
association, but we’re sure we will some day. It was “Challenging” to say
the least, but all took it well and enjoyed the experience. Tech Quiz results
are also posted at the end of this article.
The finale of the CC40 was the gathering and dinner at the Frederick Cellars.
The wine and hors d’oeuvres started the group off in fine style. The
meal to follow was equally in fine style as well, which was topped off with
a “chocoholics delight” dessert. No one seemed to wait at their table for
this ending to a delicious meal.
The grand finale was the announcement of the award winners. Like the
rest of CC40, the trophies were unusual and beautiful. Brass plaques on
authentic and historic Frederick brick pavers, a perfect keepsake reminder
for those who got to take one home. We were among the recipients, so
now we have a CC40 treasure to keep. A listing of all the winners is
posted below, but a special recognition should be given to Dan Dazzo for
his “Lufthansa Award” (which is not his first), for the highest placed member
competing in all the events of the day. Congratulations Dan, and to
all who came and competed or just came to be part of the Special Edition
of Chesapeake Challenge 40. We hope to be with you and see you all
back next year.
Special Note: For those Boxster owners who made the effort to attend
this years CC40, I also say Congratulations and Thanks. As the Boxster
Register Advocate for the East Coast, I was very happy we made such a
wonderful showing of 15 cars out of the total of 60 for this year’s event.
It was great to meet some members I’d not met before in person, to see
others that I have met before, and to overall see the reception the Box-
sters received from everyone. Our cars looked spectacular! Thank you to
the Chairs, Ellen and Bob, to Andrew Toth for his support, and especially
to all who brought their Boxsters out to be part of our special event. Let’s
top this next year!
