President’s Message by David Dukehart
It is hard to believe that 2012 is almost over! And we still have a lot
of fun planned for you! Check out pages 18 - 20 for details. Doug
Ehmann, Tech Chair, has a great day planned for us at Arena Motor
Group on December 9. Come and talk to the exotic car experts of
AMG and see how scuffed rims are repaired by the folks at Alloy
Wheel Repair. Michael Levitas from TPC will be on hand to discuss
how to get more horsepower out of your Porsche.
In one day, we will have two Community Service events, a Tour and a
Brunch! Porsche of Towson has once again invited us to start the
Kindertime toy drive from their dealership. Please join us on
December 16 at 8:30 AM as we start the day by filling backpacks for Giving Back – Linda’s Legacy to help
the homeless. Also, please bring one or more new unwrapped toys for the annual Kindertime Toy Drive that
we will deliver to WMAR-TV after a tour through Baltimore County. Then it's off to a great brunch at Ryan's
Daughter Restaurant. Drive your Porsche and make this a BIG success for this charity event.
It goes without saying how proud I am to be a member of the Chesapeake Region, PCA. My membership
started back in 1984 when I bought my first Porsche, a 1971 911T. I completely restored that 911 and fell
in love with the marque! I learned to autocross at the Hunt Valley Mall and attended several events over the
years: a social at Blob’s Park, the Chesapeake Challenge in Hershey, PA., a Parade in Savannah, etc., and
yet I never became fully engaged in all that the club offered until 2011. I have met many wonderful people
during that time and have found that we have more in common than our love of the P cars.
Why am I mentioning this you ask? I think many of our members are staying on the sidelines and are not
sure how to get involved, much like I did for 27 years! If you attend an event, or better yet volunteer to help
out, you will find that this club is a great community too! Your board is working hard to add value to your
membership! For 2013, in addition to our regular annual events, we are planning to hold a volunteer
appreciation event for all who have shared of your time in 2012 to help the club and its members. When
possible, we are subsidizing your costs to attend events and creating win-win relationships with our dealers
and vendors that benefit you and your pocketbook! We are working hard to make this good club great!
But the club needs your help! Without your assistance, we cannot continue to offer great social events like
the Chesapeake Challenge, Crab Feast, and After Holiday Party; autocross events, which are the heart of our
club, generating the revenue that keeps us financially afloat; or the tours and rallies that so many enjoy. So,
if you are out there and would like to use your time and talent to continue the great momentum that your
board and committee chairs have perpetuated, please reach out to any of us and let us know how you might
like to help. Here are some areas where we can use some help:
• Volunteer Talent Coordinator • Event registration
• Web design • Newsletter publishing expertise
• 2013 Board Nominating Committee • PCA - Regional Web Store Chair
• Marketing–vendor relationships/advertising
• Event chairs and volunteers: autocross, Chesapeake Challenge, After Holiday, Slot Car Night,
tours and rallies, Crab Feast, Volunteer Appreciation, socials, tech, community service, insurance.
From your Chesapeake PCA board and committee chairs, we wish you safe and Happy Holidays!
In what is becoming an annual tradition, Chesapeake Region ran the Fall Foliage (AKA Friendly Farms) Tour
on Saturday, October 27. The route led participants through the rolling hills of northern Baltimore County to
their destination at the Friendly Farm Restaurant in Upperco.
First Fruits Farm Tour by Gary and Kara Martinez
Community Service at First Fruits Farm
On September 29th, just prior to the official start of the holiday season, 16 Chesapeake PCA’rs showed up
to volunteer their morning in harvesting vegetable crops from the fields of the First Fruits Farm, a nonprofit
ministry dedicated to growing fresh vegetables for the hungry in Freeland. Founded in 1998, the farm has
grown to over 100 acres of crops ranging from potatoes and sweet corn to kale/collards and green beans.
Using only volunteer labor, FFF has sent over 3.8 million pounds of food (!) to its supported charities, over
20 groups in the greater Baltimore area.
Thus it was that the hardy group of Chesapeake PCA
volunteers gathered early in the dew and mist on
Saturday morning (it is a farm you know) to spend
the day working the fields! Actually to the relief of
everyone, our fearless FFF leader Frank told us we
were only on the hook until noon--the Farm’s way of
making the work fun, which it was, and not
overworking the “city” folk in hopes that they will
return another day.
With a modicum of instruction our assembled team
set off into the cabbage field to harvest “only the
largest heads of cabbage.” And how does one do
that? Well, you guess at which heads are the
largest, keeping in mind that speed and quantity
also count; and then you move (quickly) down the rows and decapitate the selected plants! A lot of fun and
a good way to work off any aggressive tension one might have.
After a short 45 minutes of “harvesting,” during which the team collected over twenty crates of a dozen
cabbage heads each, we were led to another section of the farm to cut and bag kale. In true form, the team
quickly cut and bagged more than enough kale for the farm to send out that day, and we were off on
another adventure.
Arriving at the new field, where other volunteer groups desperately needed our help to bring in the potato
crop, our first chore was to “de-rock” the area of the field that the tractor/plow/potato-digger was to
traverse. This entailed lining up in rows and throwing any exposed or partially exposed rocks larger than a
baseball out of the line of travel of the machinery. What was left unsaid was anyone to the off-field side of
the rock throwers was in mortal danger of being beaned by a hailstorm of rocks flying off the field!
However, being smarter than your average German sports car driver, the Chesapeake volunteers managed
to avoid knocking each other out before getting down to the true potato harvesting task of sorting and
loading the potatoes turned up in the ground by the plow. And after a brief tour in the field, the team, along
with the other volunteer groups had brought in over 18,000 lbs. of potatoes!
The noon break came and having successfully added to the harvest, ten members of the team took
advantage of the incredibly nice day to enjoy lunch together at Shrewsberry Inn, after which three
independent groups extended their volunteer service and delivered heads of cabbage and bags of kale to
charities in Baltimore. It was a very satisfying culmination to a terrific day of community service spent with
fellow Chesapeake PCA’rs. Thanks so much to everyone who joined in!
Member Spotlight by Bernie Blain
Spotlight on Bob Costello
1. Where did you grow up?
I was born in suburban Philadelphia, moved to the
Baltimore County area at age 15, and have lived in
central Maryland since.
2. Tell us about your favorite things to do.
I love driving my Boxster S; the windier the road, the
better. Other than that, my favorite things to do are
traveling and taking photographs. My job affords me
travel around the US and overseas.
3. What is your current profession or key activity?
I've worked as an industrial hygienist and occupational health professional for the past 31 years.
4. What is something most of us don’t know about you?
Whenever I see a person taking a picture of another person or group or even just a building, I ask if they
would like to be in the picture. I do this in every city I visit. My most memorable photo opportunity is of a
Buddhist priest and several of his monks along the Hong Kong Harbor.
5. What are things that make you laugh and serve to give you inspiration?
I laugh each time I come across an incongruent sign, such as, “This construction project will take
approximately 395 days.” My inspiration comes from within; I push myself to do my best. I may not always
succeed, but I’ll learn, grow, and succeed the next time.
6. What are some of your favorite things to do when you are not at a PCA event?
I enjoy traveling with my wife, trying new food and restaurants, and walking through cities or beautiful
country-sides taking pictures.
7. What and who inspired your interest in motor sports?
I’d have to say my sister Kaycee. She always had cool cars and made sure she took me for rides. I still
remember the 1965 Mustang Convertible and 1969 Triumph Sprite.
8. When did you join PCA and why did you become a member of Chesapeake?
I joined in the fall of 2011, a few months after I purchased my Boxster. A colleague at work, who was a
member of PCA from Central PA, recommended that I join the PCA. He said it’s a great place to meet folks
who could help you learn about your car and where to get help.
9. How did you come to acquire your current Porsche?
This is an interesting story. We had been exploring the Internet for a Boxster. We were interested in one in
Virginia, but the owner would not return calls or emails. While out in Arizona on a business trip, my wife
expanded the search to nearby places and found four vehicles in the Phoenix area. After eliminating three, I
settled on my “new “car. The gentleman selling the car accepted my handshake as a promise to buy (no
deposit check needed), helped me out with a local bank, and offered to ship the car. I just smiled and said
thanks but I think I’d rather drive it home. Understand, home was 2,400 miles away. Despite it being the
Fourth of July weekend, I was not prepared at that moment to do the trip. I flew home with a promise to be
back in a couple of weeks. He sent a driver to meet me at the airport, took me to the local bank to finish the
loan work, and then gave me a ride to the shop to get the keys to the car. He handed me the keys and then
it was time to drive. I left on a Wednesday about noon and by about 10:00 PM I was in Santa Rosa, New
Mexico. The next day, I drove through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and finally Missouri. The early
morning ride through the Ozarks as the sun was rising through the mist and ground fog as I headed to St.
Louis to meet my wife was a sight to behold. I’m only sad no one else but me was able to see such a sight.
Once my wife got the feel of the car, she was off to the races. I dozed off in Illinois and when I woke a few
hours later we were somehow in Kentucky. Only recently did I learn exactly how fast she had been driving.
Suffice it to say, she beat me by many MPH! The quick side trip to Woodford Reserve Distillery was nice as
was the bottle in the front luggage area we purchased for home. We made it to Charleston, West Virginia,
and blew a tire. The local Porsche dealer went out of their way to help us find the only proper set of tires in
the city. After a few hours delay we finished the drive home. It was a wonderful journey and great way to
bond with the car.
10. What are your primary club interests?
I’ve enjoyed helping with the Chesapeake Challenge, participating in the community service activities, and
attending some of the local drive and dines.
Community Service by Gary and Kara Martinez
The Community Service Committee Announces Chesapeake Region's "Giving Back - Linda's
Legacy" Backpack Sponsorship Drive
$25. That’s it!
For just $25 each, members of our club can sponsor backpacks through the “Giving Back - Linda's Legacy"
program. This nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has distributed warm clothing to homeless persons in
the Baltimore region for more than 30 years. These backpacks are among the most anticipated gifts
handed out to persons in need at the end of the year. They literally make a life and death difference for
persons who, for any number of reasons, don’t seek out the protection of shelters in the coldest parts of
winter. Each backpack is filled with a warm sweatshirt, thermal underwear, socks, gloves, and a hat, and
they will be distributed on Christmas Eve to the homeless community in Washington, DC, Baltimore, and
Annapolis. The $25 covers the cost of the backpack and its contents, which Giving Back has purchased at
discounted prices.
For each $25 donation we receive, the club will be able to sponsor an individual backpack. For all
contributions received by December 15th, we will receive materials to be assembled at a packing party
(details to be announced), and the backpacks will be distributed by Giving Back volunteers (you could be
one of them) on Christmas Eve.
This is a tremendous program and one in which it is very easy to participate. Checks can be made to “Giving
Back” and sent to Kara Martinez, 227 Winter Crest Lane, Severna Park, MD 21146. If you send a check,
please e-mail Kara at communityservice@pcachs.org to let her know it's on the way.
AND IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON . . .
Chesapeake PCA has received a matching gift donation to start our campaign of $750.00 for the backpack
drive. That’s 30 backpacks to start! Let’s make the match!
Historian's Corner by Bob Rassa
Heinz Werner Bade
When looking back at club history, we often focus on events rather than people. From time to time we’ll
devote space to some of the important people in our Chesapeake Region history who made major
contributions to Porsche and the club. One such person is Heinz Werner Bade (always include the middle
name, please!), who is clearly one of the best Porsche engine mechanics around--and not just in Maryland,
but the world. Heinz focused his engine building skills in support of a few famous local race drivers whose
names are instantly recognized, such as Bruce Jennings and Mike Keyser, and much of these drivers’
success is due in part to Heinz’ outstanding skills. Remember, the car must be as good as humanly
possible, even for expert drivers, if you want to win a race.
Heinz knows many of the world’s greatest drivers as he has participated in hundreds, if not thousands, of
major races over his long career building engines. He has participated in LeMans, Sebring, local SCCA
races, and many more. It is rumored that Porsche’s famous racing boss, Huschke von Hanstein, doesn’t
care much for Heinz, for the obvious reason that Heinz can prepare an engine as good as, or perhaps even
better than, many of the Porsche works mechanics.
Heinz started his first engine and repair shop in Timonium in the early 60’s, at 2020 N York Rd, under the
name of Heinz Bade Motors. Due to some legal issues, Heinz soon changed it to Timo Corp, and many have
wondered what that stood for. It is simple, really--Timo is the first four letters of Timonium. Heinz and his
late wife Carole lived on a nice farm at the northern reaches of Baltimore County, just west of I-83. He
recently sold that and moved to Parkton where he has a wonderful workshop and still builds engines for
those special few. Heinz also has some dealership experience in his past, such as Lamborghini, and he still
owns a car from that part of his past.
Heinz was the vice-president of our region in 1967, when the new member young turks came in and
suggested that the region might benefit from some creativity and exciting events. The so-called
“revitalization” of the region started in the summer of 1967. Heinz welcomed the newcomers with open
arms as he himself knew the region needed an infusion of vitality, and Heinz has been a loyal and
supportive member of the region to this day.
Editor's note: I'm not sure if Heinz ever worked
on the car in this photo, but this is a "Carrera
GT Speedster" raced by Bruce Jennings in the
early 1960's. From the Gunnar Racing web
Tech Session by Rob Mairs
Tech Session at Porsche of Annapolis
A bright and sunny day brought over forty enthusiasts to the November 10th tech session at Porsche of
Annapolis, where they got their fill of information about four wheel alignment and corner weighting. The
morning started with a catered continental breakfast arranged by Porsche of Annapolis, which included
coffee, tea, juices, bagels, pastries, and other assorted items. After everyone had signed in and had their fill
of breakfast goodies, Rob Mairs got things underway by introducing the presenters. G.H. Sharp, a veteran
SCCA ProSolo competitor, led off the demonstration with a discussion of alignment and corner balancing
and the new Hunter alignment equipment that Porsche of Annapolis had recently added to their shop. G.H.
clearly knows how to get the most out of a car and a quick Google search on his name brings up quite a
successful history on his autocrossing successes. We then held a drawing from the participants to
determine whose car was going to be used. The first draw was Dave Sharp with his beautiful black ’86 930,
but Dave declined. The next pick was Joanne Trippi and Rich Waddell’s Macadamia Brown 911 Carrera S.
Above: G.H. Sharp prepares Joanne and Rich's 911 for
some alignment work. Below: Gress Wilson aligns the
car and shares his knowledge with club members.
15
G.H. then introduced Gregg Wilson, a Gold
Meister certified technician, owner of Porsche
race cars, and PCA driver education instructor
who then began to demonstrate the alignment
process. Gregg spent the next 1.5 hours setting
Rich and Joanne’s car up, aligning the front end
followed by the rear, and describing in detail
each adjustment and the resulting effect. The
Hunter equipment is incredibly precise with
measurements displayed in hundredths of a
degree. There were lots of questions from the
audience and Gregg’s knowledge was clearly
demonstrated to all.
It was a great day and the participants left with a
much better understanding of why alignment is
important for just about any kind of driving.
Special thanks to G.H. Sharp and Gregg Wilson
for giving their time to PCA Chesapeake, and
thanks to Frank Donatoni, Porsche of Annapolis
General Manager, for hosting the event.
Tech Session, continued
An Attendee's Perspective, by Bob Rassa
In addition to the excellent capsule from Rob, I thought to add a bit of an attendee's perspective on this
outstanding technical session. The folks at Porsche of Annapolis are quire expert in the area of alignment
(as well as all other automotive-related service) and provided a clear understanding of the mechanical
aspects involved. For example, they covered the aspect that for a really precise alignment, especially on a
Porsche, you want the car's suspension undisturbed; meaning you should be able to drive right onto the
alignment rack as if on level ground to avoid any suspension compression of the type that occurs when you
drive up a ramp to the alignment rack. Such compression disturbs the way the car normally sits when being
driven, and this can lead to errors in alignment. Porsches are very sensitive to alignment settings, especially
when driven in competition, and high precision is paramount in that environment.
Additionally, it is important to align the car with loading equivalent to the average driving environment, such
as making sure there is a half-tank of gas in the car (the average, right?) and even a driver, if this is the
normal condition, especially in competition. Regular calibration of the alignment equipment is paramount,
and Porsche of Annapolis folks calibrate their equipment on a regular basis. The technicians also discussed
the margin of error (i.e., tolerance) in Porsche alignment specifications, and provided an explanation of
which side of the tolerance is more suitable for different types of driving. They also discussed the
importance of four-wheel alignment, and how the rear wheel alignment can dramatically affect cornering
performance.
All in all it was a superb session, and the three major door prizes (Porsche trickle chargers) were a very
generous gesture. The coffee and refreshments were appreciated by all attendees.
8:15 Awards presentations followed by the Yankee Swap
Contact: Cheryl Taylor, vicepresident@pcachs.org
Note your calendars for an encore performance of the premier event of the season, the After Holiday Party and
Yankee Swap. Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA,
one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. The social hour and dinner are
spectacular enough, even in a group that defines itself as a “social club, with a serious car problem,” but the
Yankee Swap makes the event.
A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event.
Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap . . . The
good stuff is coveted, hoarded, and only grudging given up under duress. The original emcee team of Alban and
Gutjahr, more popularly known as The Bob and Manny Show, will once again host this sell-out event.
Each person that wants to play just needs to bring a wrapped “car-related” gift, valued at approximately $25.
(Of course, if you prefer, you may attend the event and not participate in the Swap, but be prepared to feel left
out once the fun begins!) Be sure to bring a gift that you’d be happy to take home, because you never know
what will happen! All gifts are placed on the table and names are drawn one at a time . . . each person has the
choice of choosing a new gift, or stealing one that has been opened before. Only 3 steals are permitted per
round, and then the next person has to choose a new gift - gifts can only be stolen once per round. If you don’t
quite follow, never fear, it will all become clear as the swap unfolds . . . and Manny and Bob will make sure you
laugh so much your cheeks hurt!
The cost of this event has been reduced to $45 per person thanks to Porsche of Towson.
Answer to the Trivia Question
From Wikipedia:
At the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (Frankfurt Motor Show) in Frankfurt in
September 1963, Porsche presented its successor to the Porsche 356 as the 901. It took
several more months until the cars were manufactured for sale to customers. Between 14
September and 16 November 1964, 82 cars were built and the 901 was presented in
October at the 1964 Paris Auto Salon. There, French car maker Peugeot objected to Porsche
using any three digit number where the middle number was 0, asserting ownership of the
naming rights in key markets, and having already sold many models with that scheme.
Advertisements in The Mart are free for members of any PCA region. A $10 fee is charged for
From the Editor by Mark Hubley
I'm writing this during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and if you're reading this, then you (like me)
probably have plenty to be thankful for: family, friends, living in the USA, etc. And, of course, that car (or
cars) in your driveway or garage. For me, it's been another great year with Chesapeake Region. Thanks to
everyone who helped put on all the events and to everyone who has contributed to the Patter! I'm eagerly
anticipating the After Holiday Party and all the other events that are coming in 2013. I wish all of you a
Happy New Year and hope you enjoy your Porsche and some events with PCA in the coming year. Please
consider offering some of your time to help out the club.
In closing, here are two random items of interest:
911 Birthday Surprise?
According to the Left Lane website, Porsche will celebrate the 50th birthday of the 911 with a special edition
of the car. Porsche has never been shy about producing special editions of their cars, so it would be a
surprise if they didn't come out with a 50th anniversary edition.
Porsche Club Raffle
PCA is raffling off a 2013 Boxster S. The raffle is for members only, and the deadline for entry is December
