Pens are much less work.”
Born and raised on the east
side of Escondido, but now living
in Encinitas, Dolan said his
artistic interests began with
cartooning. “In second grade,
we had a book in our class by
an artist that showed many of
the cartoons he drew. I looked
at this book and found myself
copying his style and technique.
Later, my mom got me a
kit that also showed how to
draw cartoons. After that, I
found I could replicate just
about any cartoon I saw.”
Over the subsequent years,
Dolan experimented with various
other styles and techniques.
“Eventually, I gravitated
into darker art forms,
including graffiti art.”
TO YOUR HEALTH
CONTINUED FROM A14
just has to run its course. Time,
rest and plenty of fluids are the
best treatments; over-the-counter
medications can help relieve
cough, muscle aches, fever and
other symptoms. Choose medications
designed to treat only the
symptoms you have to avoid overmedicating
yourself. Follow the
directions carefully and be especially
aware of side effects such as
dizziness and drowsiness. Most flu
symptoms should run their course
within a week or so.However,even
after the worst of the illness has
passed, it can take a month or
more to get your energy back and
feel like your usual self again.
Give your body time to get back
up to speed.
Defend yourself
The flu shot can be one of
your best defenses against illness.
That’s also when he became
interested in tattoos as an art
form. “My cousin had been a
tattoo artist for something like
10 years,” Dolan said. “I’d sit for
hours watching him do tattoos.
That’s how many tattoo artists
learn their trade. They become
apprentices to experts until
they’re skilled enough to do it
on their own. Right now, I do
tattoos only as a hobby, but in
the past, I’ve worked for a while
in a tattoo shop.”
An avid surfer since he was
very young, Dolan did his first
surfboard when a friend
showed him a board with some
jellyfish spray-painted on it. “I
thought the board was kind of
lame, so I asked him if he would
give it to me to see what I could
do with it,” Dolan said.
“Afterwards, I gave the finished
board to my friend’s son,
whose birthday was coming up.
The specific strains used in the
shot changes from year to year
depending on which are expected
to be most prevalent. No shot will
protect against every flu bug, but
it can increase your odds of escaping
the most popular ones. Flu
shots are very safe, and since the
virus is dead, it can’t infect you
with the flu.
Who should get a flu shot?
The American Academy of
Pediatrics now recommends annual
influenza immunization for all
children, both healthy and with
high-risk conditions, ages 6
months through 18 years. And
according to the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration, almost all
people who want to lower their
chance of coming down with the
flu can and should get a flu shot.
The vaccine is also recommended
for the elderly, people with weakened
immune systems, and anyone
likely to be exposed to the
virus, such as teachers or health
He absolutely adores it.”
Most of the boards he
receives to resurrect as art are
either damaged boards or
hand-me-downs. “So most of
them aren’t in the best condition
for surfing, but it does
make them perfect for wall
art,” he said.
Eventually, Dolan would
like to see his art on other
items, as well — shirts, hats,
stickers, posters and even toilet
seats. Yep, you read that right.
“A friend and I are seriously
thinking about trying to decorate
toilet seats,” he said. “I
know this sounds crazy, but like
many artists, I want to spread
my artistic talents across several
platforms. This way if one
doesn’t do well, I can always try
to make my fortune off another.”
Which is what Dolan hopes
to do some day with his own art
company.
care workers. Pregnant women
should consult their obstetrician.
Ask your doctor whether the flu
shot is a good idea for you and
your family.
Whether you get a flu shot or
not, practice prevention; wash
your hands frequently, keep them
away from your eyes, nose and
mouth, and try to stay away from
sick people. If you’re the one who
is sick, cover your mouth and nose
with a tissue when you cough or
sneeze and try to avoid touching
other people or shared objects. If
you can, stay home from work or
school until you are better.
