OCT. 3, 2008 Volunteers abound for community project By Promise Yee OCEANSIDE — Close to 900 volunteers turned out to paint, pull weeds and remove debris at the seventh annual Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods Project on Sept. 27, in the Eastside neighborhood, and got the job done in record time. Volunteers from local schools, churches and colleges tackled home and garden overhauls in a two-block stretch of Santa Barbara Street, between Lemon Street and Puls Street. Once the area was selected for annual Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods, or SUN, improvements, homeowners and renters were offered the opportunity to have their homes and yards fixed up in return for a few hours of sweat equity. “Everyone in the area was offered the package,” Tom Currier, Oceanside senior code enforcement officer, said. Materials were donated, volunteers signed up, and the day ran like clockwork, David Manley, neighborhood services division manager, said. Lots of cities do this, but Oceanside is considered a benchmark in event organization and operations, Manley said. “Some volunteers have been doing this every year,” Manley said. “They know what to do — start at the front and move to the back.” Jenny Carll of El Camino High School was one of an estimated 50 volunteers from the high school. “We got a lot done,” Jenny said. “It’s good to help out the community.” Groups that helped out with a big number of volunteers this year included The Church of Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints, that rallied 200 volunteers, and Palomar College, with 160 volunteers. “It grows every year,” Manley said. The morning of hard work by hundreds was followed by some play. Let them do community service or something. Gus Fleming didn’t burst onto the scene at Swami’s. I mean, you would hardly notice him, except for his powerful, minimalist style, where he would come racing from the outside and hit the top like only a big man can. And I can still see him, downshifting through the dead zone, then power shifting for speed and coming off the top, spraying me in the process. Impressive but not Slater, not the best in the world, unless you use Phil Edward’s criteria, “The best surfer in the world is the one having the most fun.” I can’t prove that Gus had the most fun either — I can only judge by the smile on his face each time I saw him, which was often, since we both surfed Swami’s every time it broke for at least a decade. It’s hardly worth mentioning except that it’s such a rarity in our sport, but Gus was African-American, with a powerful build and the strong features of an Ethiopian king. And he carried himself like royalty, not hurried and hyper, but calm and dignified as he made his way into the lineup. Another thing that stands out to me is that everyone liked him. Just yesterday I was standing around the point, talking about him, picking up a few random comments. Local surfer John Moseley mentioned Gus’s courage and strength. MARC MOODY 42| CARLSBAD I’m pretty much flat-out “yes.” Parents should be responsible for their kids and knowing where they are. So if a kid’s caught doing it, the parents should be held responsible for it. Mark Donnellan was quiet and thoughtful in his praise, speaking about Gus’ attitude and how, according to Mark, “I would often see him on the inside hitting the top so hard that his feet were above his head.” Others nodded in agreement as Mark spoke. Gus Fleming passed away from complications due to Lou Gehrig’s disease on Sept. 4. Each of us at the Point on the aforementioned day was remorseful that we had not gone to see him. In the end, Moseley received “more from Gus than I gave,” taking from his wisdom and courage. To honor Gus and help care for his loved ones, Moseley in conjunction with Moonlight Glassing has created boards he calls FROG (Friends Of Gus Fleming). Each board is hand-shaped by a world-class shaper and has a frog airbrushed on it by Moseley. Last Saturday, a few hundred of Gus’ best friends paddled out to Swami’s to say goodbye and scatter his ashes in the place he loved like none other.
