Nursing Professor Shares Value of Mentoring
Viterbo nursing professor
Carl Bargabos
knows the importance
of mentoring and he
shared the message in
Missouri. Bargabos
gave the keynote
address at a gathering
of Central Missouri
State University nursing
students and professional
nurses in Viterbo Nursing Professor and
Warrensburg Feb. 23. Retired U.S. Army Colonel Carl
Bargabos met with a group of
involved in nursing a
for me,” Bargabos said. “Mentoring
There are many professionals out
there who would rather be teachers,
but for some reason or
another, are doing something
else. The Post-
Baccalaureate Teacher
Licensure Program at
Viterbo may be the
answer to their problems.
“It’s not a degree program,
students earn a
teacher license recommen-
dation certificate,” said
Elizabeth Brendel, program coordinator.
“Credits completed also can be
put toward a Master’s Degree in
Education as electives.”
The program allows students to
teach middle or high school in their
original degree field. The Viterbo
graduate program was approved by
the Wisconsin Department of Public
allows one nurse to
teach another the
intangibles that make a
good nurse. Intangibles
like empathy, compassion,
and leadership –
the qualities that make
you a person.”
Bargabos is a retired
U.S. Army Colonel
who spent 26 years in
the U.S. Army. After
serving eight years as
an Air Force Medic,
Bargabos earned his
BSN then joined the
Army. He also has a
Master’s Degree in Nursing.
Viterbo Program Helping Grads Become Te a c h e r s
Instruction in November of 2002.
There is a full group of 30 students
currently seeking their certificates,
with another 30
ready to go this fall. There
are 112 more students on
a waiting list. This has all
been accomplished with
virtually no advertising.
The program includes
16 graduate credits and a
semester of full-time student
teaching. Like
Viterbo’s other adult-based programs,
it is set up with the non-traditional
student in mind. “Most prospective
students will also be pleasantly surprised
at the cost of the program,”
Brendel said, “because Viterbo’s graduate
credits are less than many competing
public schools.”

The first Friday of eve ry month is
grant for a deserving student. The second
Friday is Em p l oyee Da y, with the
money going to cover a portion of the
costs of employee lunches and other
Recent news of interest in the
l i b r a ry world is the petition created in
response to the USA PAT R I OT Ac t
and launched by the American
L i b r a ry Association, the American
Booksellers Association, and the PE N
American Center. These groups seek
to amend Section 215 of the Ac t
which allows an FBI agent to obtain a
s e a rch warrant without “p ro b a b l e
c a u s e” for any tangible thing including
books, re c o rds, papers, floppy
disks, data tapes, and computers with
h a rd drives stored in any medium.
Librarians or others served with the
p roper warrant are not allowed to tell
a n yone about the investigation or the
release of patron information, exc e p t
for those whose help is needed to produce
the re c o rd s .
The organizations are unified in
their support of three bills that have
been introduced to amend Se c t i o n
215: The Freedom to Read Pro t e c t i o n
Act (Sanders—H.R. 1157), T h e
L i b r a ry and Bookseller Protection Ac t
(UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The
day was first observed in 1993. The
goal of the World Day for Water is to
inspire political and community
action and encourage greater global
understanding of the need for more
responsible water use and conservation.
Those in situations of poverty around
the world are thirsty. They are thirsty
for water. They are thirsty for justice.
They are thirsty for peace. O God, give
us courage and strength to work to
quench their thirst. Amen.
Librarians are concerned about the
PAT R I OT Act because of priva c y
issues including the loss of the Fo u rt h
Amendment probable cause standard ,
the secrecy invo l ved in procuring the
warrants and the patron information,
the increase in government surve i llance,
and the lack of judicial and
c o n g ressional oversight in the process.
How does the average librarian
respond to an FBI inquiry? In Ap r i l
of 2003, an FBI agent contacted the
Viterbo Library concerning a library
u s e r. (We we re not presented with a
s e a rch warrant so the gag order does
not apply here.) The communication
i n vo l ved an initial phone call inquiry,
then follow-up phone calls and
emails. Staff members we re unprep
a red for this initial contact. To
i n c rease our preparation for any future
inquiries, we held a staff in-serv i c e
and later, staff members coord i n a t e d
and participated in a workshop entitled,
“Academic Libraries and the
USA Patriot Act,” for library dire c t o r s
Independent Colleges and
Un i ve r s i t i e s .
Wednesday, March 24, marks the
24th anniversary of the martyrdom
of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El
told a reporter, “You can tell the people
that I forgive and bless those who do
it. Hopefully, they will realize they
