VOLUME 21, NUMBER 31 A Newsletter for the Viterbo University Community MAY 5, 2008
Celebrations, Congratulations, and Gratitude
The conclusion of another academic year is good reason for
many celebrations and a good time to express my gratitude to
our campus community for a most successful year.
Congratulations to those honored at the Rose Awards on
May 1. Your exemplary work, in and outside the classroom, is
richly deserving of our praise. A special note of thanksgiving
to our retiring faculty who have been awarded the prestigious
rank of professor emeritus: Jack Havertape, Larry Krajewski,
Susan Rush, Joan Keller-Maresh, and Patricia Wessels. Their cumulative service at
Viterbo covers 120 years.
A commendation is likewise in order for faculty, staff, and administrators who
are moving into retirement or other places of employment. And, a tip of the mortar
board to the graduating class of 2008. Thank you for your investment in Viterbo
and a note of appreciation to teachers, advisors, coaches, mentors, and others who
have supported our graduates during their time at Viterbo. Thanks to all those who
have planned our various celebrations and end of the year programs, and of course,
thanks to the commencement committee and the staff in the registrar’s offi ce.
National Nurses Week begins May 6. Let’s salute our nursing faculty for preparing
special healing ministry.
Tips on Avoiding Warm Weather Pests
Summer means a variety of things; hot days, barbecues with family and friends,
and lazy afternoons in the pool. The warm weather also means you have to watch
out for those pesky little bugs roaming around your yard, especially if you are allergic
to insect bites. Mosquitoes, bees, and ticks are common summer pests.
Mosquito bites are not only itchy and annoying, but they potentially carry the
threat of the West Nile Virus. Tips to avoid bites include:
avoid being outside around dusk, when mosquitoes are most numerous
wear long pants and sleeves to avoid showing skin
put on insect repellent
keep your property free of standing water where mosquitoes breed
Tips for avoiding problems with bees and wasps, especially if you are allergic:
if you are allergic, carry an epinephrine kit with you at all times
avoid hanging out near hives and garden areas with fl owers
avoid bright, busy colors and perfumes as they may attract bees
keep foods covered when eating outdoors and keep garbage cans closed
wasps and bees will generally leave you alone if you don’t bother them
Ticks are small blood sucking bugs and can carry a variety of diseases including
Lyme disease. Some ticks are so small that they can be diffi cult to see. Ticks may
get on you if you walk through areas where they live, such as tall grass and weeds.
Ticks can only crawl; they cannot fl y or jump. The best way to protect yourself
against a tick-borne illness is to avoid tick bites. Here are some other precautions:
use a chemical repellent with DEET, permethrin, or picaridin
wear light colored, protective clothing
tuck pant legs into socks
avoid tick-infested areas
check yourself, your children, and your pets daily for ticks and remove them
How to remove a tick the right way: the mouthparts of a tick are barbed and may
remain embedded if not removed promptly. Do not burn the tick with a match or
cover it with petroleum jelly or nail polish. Do not use bare hands to remove the
tick because tick secretions may carry disease. The best way is to grasp it fi rmly with
tweezers as close to the skin as possible and gently, but fi rmly, pull it straight out. Do
not twist or jerk the tick. If tweezers are not available, grasp the tick with a piece of
tissue, cloth, or whatever can be used as a barrier between your fi ngers and the tick.
Ticks can be safely disposed of by placing them in a container of soapy water or alcohol,
sticking them to tape, or fl ushing them down the toilet. Wash the bite area and
your hands thoroughly with soap and water and apply an antiseptic to the bite.
Francis. He became her lifelong friend
and spiritual guide. At 18, she escaped
one night from her father’s home, was
met on the road by friars carrying torches,
and in the poor little chapel called
the Portiuncula received a rough woolen
habit, exchanged her jeweled belt for
a common rope with knots in it, and
sacrifi ced the long tresses to Francis’
scissors. He placed her in a Benedictine
convent which her father and uncles
immediately stormed in rage. She
clung to the altar of the church, threw
aside her veil to show her cropped hair
and remained adamant. Clare lived a
simple life of great poverty, austerity
and complete seclusion from the world,
according to a Rule which Francis gave
them as a Second Order (Poor Clares).
Francis obliged her under obedience at
age 21 to accept the offi ce of abbess,
one she exercised until her death.
Contemporary accounts glow with
admiration of her life in the convent of
San Damiano in Assisi. She served the
sick, waited on table, washed the feet
of the begging nuns. She came from
prayer, it was said, with her face so
shining it dazzled those about her. She
suffered serious illness for the last 27
years of her life. Her infl uence was such
that popes, cardinals and bishops often
came to consult her—she never left the
walls of San Damiano.
