The Children’s Library Services
Section of the Catholic
Library Association is proud
to announce that Ashley
Bryan has been awarded the
2011 Regina Medal.
He will receive the award
on April 27, 2011, at the
Catholic Library Association
Conference in New Orleans,
Louisiana. The Regina Medal
is given annually in recognition
of a lifetime of excellence
in children’s literature.
Bryan, who is best known
for his retelling and illustration
of African and international
folktales, qualifies for
this award through the more
than 40 books he has written,
illustrated, and co-authored.
Among them are Beat the
Story Drum, Pum-Pum, Let It
Shine, and Beautiful Blackbird.
His most recent is All Things
Bright and Beautiful, published
in 2010.
Bryan has used a variety
of media in his work, from
tempera and block prints to
sepia-line drawings and watercolors.
He evokes the oral
tradition through his use of
the rhythms of poetry.
Born in 1923, Bryan grew
up in the Bronx as one of six
children. He is a graduate of
Cooper Union Art School and
Columbia University. His long
career in teaching art culminated
with his retirement as
Professor Emeritus at Dartmouth
College in the 1980s.
When he is at home, on
Little Cranberry Island off the
coast of Maine, he paints,
writes, and makes puppets
and stained glass panels from
objects found on the beach.
Fall 2010
The rest of his time is spent
traveling around the world,
giving puppet shows, poetry
and storytelling presentations,
and building schools and libraries
in Africa.
Members of the Regina
Medal Committee include the
Welcome back! The students
at St. Joseph School in
Menomonie were greeted
by Lady Liberty!
I decided to try four different
themes in the library
this school year! My son
(who does have a bit of art
talent but not in the art
field) carved the face and
arm from a piece of insulation.
The torch, hand and book
were carved but attached
with dowels to give the 3D
appearance. Noah did the
front of the statue, the back
was left flat. I used green
fabrics to drape around the
insulation to give it the
“copper” look.
L i b r a r y T h e m e s
I wrote the poem on black
paper with chalk and “lit
up” the torch. I pulled fiction,
nonfiction books and
periodicals about Lady Liberty,
Ellis Island, and Immigrants.
I displayed items received
from grandparents and
great grandparents, such as
bread tins, aprons, and canning
jars.
The students are in awe,
with several ideas to work
off one topic; I am able to
keep the theme up for two
months.
Over the next weeks, depending
on the grade level,
we will talk about how the
statue was made, Ellis Island,
and who fixed it up?
We will discuss what life
was like for the immigrants
before they left their countries,
why people were coming
to the United States.
What was life like when
Regina Medal bookmarks
can be ordered on the CLA
website, www.cathla.org.
To find the order form,
click on the Regina Medal
press release on the homepage.
they arrived in the United
States? Immigration then
and immigration now; are
there differences? What
does the Catholic Church
teach about immigration?
We will learn Roman numerals
and what is written
on the cover of the book
Lady Liberty is holding.
For grades five and six I
put together ten questions to
find answers to in the computer
lab. This will be our
review for using a database,
task bar and Word
features.
The remaining themes are
maps, rainforest, and wars
throughout America’s history.
I am excited for this school
year. I hope you are gathering
ideas to submit in future
Kaleidoscopes as well.
Established in 1921, the Catholic Library Association is an
international membership organization, providing its members
professional development through educational and networking
experiences, publications, scholarships, and other services. The
Catholic Library Association coordinates the exchange of ideas,
provides a source of inspirational support and guidance in ethical
issues related to librarianship, and offers fellowship for
those who seek, serve, preserve, and share the word in all its
forms.
The Wisconsin Chapter of the Catholic Library Association,
founded in 1936, serves to initiate, encourage, and promote the
ministry of librarianship and Catholic libraries of distinction at
all levels. It upholds excellent taste in literature and other
communications media, and offers library-related guidance and
assistance to anyone who has questions. The WCLA acts as a
support group for librarians, para-professionals, and volunteers
in any type of library. Meeting with peers provides an opportunity
for discussion, camaraderie, and prayer. The membership
newsletter, The Kaleidoscope, published three times per year, is
an opportunity to share library-related ideas.
M e m o f r o m M a r c i a
chairman.
I have enjoyed serving as your
president for the past three years,
and now it is time to step down. I will
continue to serve WCLA in whatever
capacity I can.
WCLA is fortunate to have so many
wonderfully involved members and I
am grateful to have had this opportunity
to serve.
See you next month in the Dells.
God bless you all,
Marcia
