campus ministry and mission
By Fr. Tom O’Neill
All are invited
to “Stem Cells
and Cloning
Explained,” a presentation
by Rev.
Tadeusz Pacholczyk,
Ph.D., director
of education
at the National
Catholic Bioethics Center, Monday
March 6, at St. Thomas More Church,
21st & Weston Streets (on Weston St.
four blocks west of Losey Blvd.). Free
and open to the public.
March is National Women’s History
Month—In 1981, the U.S. Congress
passed a resolution establishing National
Women’s History Week. In
1987, Congress expanded the week to a
month. Every year since, Congress has
passed a resolution for Women’s History
Month, and the U.S. president has issued
a proclamation.
Anyone with an e-mail account has
received something like this: a forwarded
message that tells of Oliver
North, during the Iran-Contra hearings,
warning the United States of Osama bin
Laden’s terrorist activities. Or unbelievable
pictures of a mule attacking a
cougar. Perhaps you’ve been told of the
band Van Halen. Did they really insist
all brown M&Ms be removed from the
bowl of candy in their dressing room?
There are ways to find out if these
stories are true. Different websites have
acted as judges in debunking outrageous
stories that fly around cyberspace.
Although many are hoaxes, there are
times the stories are true. So, the next
time someone forwards you an e-mail,
take a moment to check the facts before
forwarding it on to the next person.
National Women’s History Project,
has recognized and celebrated the rich
and varied contributions of women to
the history and culture of the United
States.
The 2006 Women’s History Month
theme, “Women: Builders of Communities
and Dreams,” honors the spirit
of possibility and hope set in motion by
generations of women in their creation
of communities and their encouragement
of dreams.
The theme honors women for bringing
communities together and restoring
hope in the face of impossible odds.
Community comes in many forms, and
dreams change, expand, and are sometimes
fulfilled.
March 1 is International Death
Penalty Abolition Day, a day that marks
the occasion in 1847 when the state
of Michigan became the first English-speaking
territory in the world to
abolish capital punishment. See www.
As far as the stories above, no, Oliver
North, did not foretell of Osama bin
Laden’s terrorist activities against the
U.S. The photos of the mule attacking
a cougar are real, but there is debate
over whether or not the cougar was
alive at the time they were taken. As for
Van Halen’s outrageous demand? Yes,
it’s true. Hidden within their lengthy
contract was a statement that brown
M&Ms had to be removed. Why?
When the band would enter their dressing
room before a show and see brown
M&Ms mixed in with the other colors,
they knew their contract had not been
read carefully, and they would expect
other problems during their show that
night.
Focus On . . . The Learning Center
The Learning Center staff: Back, L to R, are Andy Moore, Melissa
Growt, Pat Davis Roberts, Lindsay Cummings, Jane Eddy, and Judy
Ulland. In front, L to R, are Sr. Mildred Tigges, Sr. Bernyne Stark,
Heidi Erickson, and Barb Schroeder.
Who we are: The Learning Center staff consists of fulltime,
part-time, and volunteer professional staff and
approximately 80 student tutors. Full-time staff includes:
Jane Eddy, director; Melissa Growt, academic counselor;
Andy Moore, reading/writing specialist; Pat Davis Roberts
and Heidi Erickson, math specialists; and Judy Ulland and
Bonnie Pickett, writing specialists. Sr. Bernyne Stark, Sr.
Mildred Tigges and Lindsay Cummings volunteer their time
in the areas of writing and history. Barb Schroeder is the
administrative assistant.
What we do: Help students. While the Learning Center is
known campus wide as the place where tutoring takes place,
they also teach, are advisers to students who are undeclared
and five-year nursing majors, work individually and collectively
with the 200 students who are part of the Student
Deadline for Alcohol Awareness Week Activities
is March 2
The deadline for campus groups to submit
an activity for Alcohol Awareness
Week is Thursday, March 2.
Connect Club members will be
contacting campus groups this month
to encourage organizations to sponsor
an awareness display, alternative activity,
educational program, or entertaining
event during the week of April 2–8.
Alcohol Awareness Week is organized
to increase awareness of alcohol
issues affecting college students and to
2
encourage low-risk choices through a
variety of educational and recreational
activities. While the week is coordinated
by the campus peer educators, the success
of the week depends on the collaboration
of various campus clubs and
organizations.
For more information about Alcohol
Awareness Week and about ways
to get involved contact Anne Ellefson,
student development, at ext. 3807 or
amellefson@viterbo.edu.
Support Services grant, offer numerous accommodations
to students with diagnosed disabilities, and offer in excess
of 100 workshops each year. Last year the Learning Center
staff also proctored 800 tests.
Who’s new: Several new staff members joined the Learning
Center last fall. Judy Ulland, a retired La Crosse high school
teacher, joined us as a part-time writing specialist. Lindsay
Cummings, a VISTA volunteer working full-time with
Fr. Tom and Campus Ministry, asked if she could volunteer
her time working with students. Sr. Millie Tigges might be
known to many Viterbo community members who have
been around for a while. Now that she is retired, she offered
her services to students in the Learning Center.
Some interesting facts about what we do: Last year
(2004–05) the Learning Center served 82 percent of fulltime
undergraduate students and 75 percent of all undergraduate
students. Students are served through workshops,
individual and group tutoring, accommodations, and individual
appointments with staff. Summer tutoring offerings
are on the increase. They also serve graduate students with
writing and research needs. Last year they had almost 1,500
requests for tutoring.
The Learning Center staff also does extensive outreach to
200 Viterbo students through a federal grant called Student
Support Services.
Coming up: Spring Break, followed by summer vacation.
Yes, just like the students they serve, the staff members of the
Learning Center long for these “breaks” in the harried pace.
In accord with the grant guidelines, the center will be
hiring a full time writing specialist for next year. Other than
that, they will continue to offer more workshops, more
tutoring, more testing accommodations, and more of whatever
else in the way of academic support the students need.
Relay continued from front page
students, faculty, staff, and community
members are welcome and encouraged
to attend the event.
