cool houses love energy bills
BASF’s construction solutions and energy-efficient materials are more
cost-effective than conventional insulating systems and materials,
and have a much higher insulation capacity. So, thanks to products
like Neopor ® and Elastopor ® , houses stay cooler in the summer and
waste less energy. Saving on emissions means saving on bills?
Now you can cut your
water heating costs by
up to 67%
Before you run that bath, think of the electricity
you’re wasting. Water heating accounts for up to
40% of your monthly electricity bill.
But there’s good news:
If you install a heat pump to heat your water,
you can cut your water
heating costs by up to
67%
A heat pump is an energy ef cient water heating
technology. It is a simple device that uses little
energy to transfer heat to your water. This reduces
your dependence on the constrained power grid.
We’ll pay you to install a heat pump!
Eskom’s Integrated Demand Management (IDM)
Department is dedicated to saving energy in all
spheres of South African life. If you install a heat
pump in your residence or small business, Eskom
IDM will give you a rebate, depending on the size
in litres of the pump you buy, see table below.
So, you’ll save money even before you feel the
bene ts of those monthly savings.
Heat pump tank size Rebates on offer
100 – 300 litres R3 668
301 – 500 litres R4 320
The rebate applies only to completed installations
and is offered until 31 March 2013.
Chairman’s Note:
Llewellyn van Wyk - CSIR
The programme for this year’s Green
Building Conference has been
structured differently from previous
years. The presentations have been
arranged to begin with an update of the status of green building in
South Africa, and progress from a broad overview of key principles
down to detail studies culminating in a design charrette at the end
of Day Two. The intention is thus to take the delegate on a journey
from a general understanding to the implementation of principles
over the two days.
Design Charrettes
The French term ‘charrette’ refers to Parisian architecture students
in the 19th century. The goal of a charrette is to begin a community
dialogue. The design concepts that emerge from a charrette are
normally widely circulated. It’s very likely that these ideas will
have a significant impact on shaping a development. Typically
design professionals are divided into four teams that will approach
different elements of the area around the future development. In
the case of the charrette to be held at the conference the idea is to
a) promote the notion of collaborative design and b) to encourage
delegates to apply the lessons they have learnt from the two days
of presentations.
After the session the delegates will have had the opportunity to use
the knowledge they have gained from the presentations and have
applied it to a real building.
Join 1 of three mock “charrettes” (multidisciplinary workshops)
mandated to conceptualise and design the ideal retrofit of a
selected building for ecological performance. Each of three parallel
sessions will focus of a different building type: an office building
(with training centre), a retail building and a residential building.
Delegates will participate alongside a panel of experts from among
the plenary speakers plus invited guests in two hour long sessions
as they workshop the retrofit. Experts will draw on actual trial and
error experience to describe the process and lead the group down a
particular path – and all this will be captured on architectural design
software by a programmer in real time – enabling the group to
witness the simulated effect of proposed interventions. Professionals
seeking full CPD accreditation are expected to attend these sessions.
SABC
SABC 3 is strongly associated with the pursuit of excellence and style, and for reflecting people who live life
positively and passionately. The channel has embarked on a journey of transformation in order to re-establish SABC
3 as one of the leading television brands in South Africa, and a new look and feel will be introduced later in the year,
along with an invigorated programming and marketing strategy.
Our approach will be centered on those South Africans who are powerfully and upwardly mobile, who celebrate
life with a real sense that they ‘have arrived!’ They have a global outlook but are firmly rooted in Africa. They are
confident achievers, the thought leaders in our society who are committed to a better South Africa. Shaped by
history, they are now defining the future.
That future depends entirely on how we manage our natural resources and push back the ravaging effects of
climate change. SABC 3 has begun to play a role in helping South Africans understand what each one can do to
make a positive difference to our environment. And we are hoping to do even more as we continue to plant trees
in our partnership with Carbon Free, and link hands with others who are intent on greening South Africa for the
sake of our children and their children’s children.
