58 <strong>Social</strong> <strong>determ<strong>in</strong>ants</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>countries</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>conflict</strong><br />
All civil society reports noted the development <strong>of</strong> cop<strong>in</strong>g strategies to respond to<br />
<strong>conflict</strong> situations and the creation <strong>of</strong> social and community-based activities designed<br />
to <strong>in</strong>crease the resilience <strong>of</strong> populations, provide support for families and <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
community solidarity. Although the cop<strong>in</strong>g strategies developed by civilians <strong>in</strong> <strong>conflict</strong><br />
vary, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and strengthen<strong>in</strong>g social networks <strong>in</strong> a changed or new sett<strong>in</strong>g can be<br />
a key to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g mental and physical <strong>health</strong>. Conflict and its attendant trauma <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
require that <strong>in</strong>dividuals undertake new roles and these roles may strengthen <strong>in</strong>dividuals’<br />
ability to cope <strong>in</strong> stressful situations. Individuals and communities can adapt to adversity<br />
and may even thrive <strong>in</strong> spite <strong>of</strong> it. Solidarity, shared resilience and a sense <strong>of</strong> pride <strong>in</strong><br />
res<strong>is</strong>tance are <strong>of</strong>ten shared by communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>conflict</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>gs as they become active<br />
participants <strong>in</strong> social processes rather than passive observers. These qualities provide<br />
hope for a positive future <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> a recognition <strong>of</strong> character<strong>is</strong>tics that promote positive<br />
adaptation and <strong>of</strong> resilience as an asset for future <strong>health</strong> development.<br />
