Camplin shot a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Ross Prachar, PGA of Hank Haney International Jr. Golf Academy. Camplin started the second round tied for first with Bret James, PGA Teaching Professional at Blowing Rock (N.C.) CC after both shot a 67 (-5) on the first day of the tournament. Prachar put the pressure on Camplin during the second round of the tournament by carding a 66 (-6), the lowest round of the tournament. Camplin birdied the eighteenth hole to force a playoff with Pracher. Fifty PGA Professionals teed off in this event which for the second year combined the Head Professional Championship and The RBC Heritage CPGA Member Qualifying into coinciding one and two-day events. Players were treated to two spectacular day of Lowcountry spring weather with temperatures in the low 80’s and sunny skies. Todd Camplin, PGA 2012 Head Professional Champion All Class ‘A’ Members (excluding PGA Tour Members and Assistant Professionals), Life Members, and Master Professionals are eligible to compete in the CPGA Head Professional Championship. It will take place over two days; however, scores from Monday will count for the one-spot qualifier for the RBC Heritage. All CPGA Members (excluding PGA Tour Members) are eligible to attempt to qualify. The Carolinas PGA Section would like to thank PGA Director of Golf Matthew Presnell, his staff and the members of Berkeley Hall Club for their hospitality in hosting this second annual event. We’ would also like to thank Sun Mountain, Global Golf Sales, and the PGA TOUR for their continued contributions to Carolinas PGA events and tournaments The playoff to win the CPGA Head Professional Championship was not the only one for Todd Camplin, PGA that week. He also competed in a playoff against Bret James, PGA to qualify to represent the Carolinas PGA Section at The RBC Heritage. Both shot a 67 (-5) during the first round of The RBC Hertiage CPGA Member Qualifying to force a playoff to determine who would get the opportunity to play at the PGA Tour event. Camplin won with a par on the first hole of the sudden death playoff. A single spot and one alternate spot were up for grabs for those taking part in the one-day CPGA Member Qualifying for The RBC Heritage, South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR stop. Carolinas PGA Professionals have enjoyed their opportunity to compete for that spot since 1997. James held the first alternate positions for the tournament played on April 12-15, 2012 at Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort (Hilton Head, S.C.)
een champions at the Carolinas Open. 88th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T May 8- 10, 2012 Bryan Park Golf Course - Champions Course Browns Summit, N.C. - The Carolinas PGA Section is set to host its first major tournament at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center since moving the headquarters to inside the gates of Bryan Park. The Carolinas Open Pro-Am benefitting the First Tee of the Triad will be held on May 7th, and tournament play for the 88th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T will run from Tuesday - Thursday, May 8th-10th. Holding the 88th Carolinas Open presented by BB&T at Bryan Park will showcase the CPGA’s new home site and the strong relationship already formed between the CPGA and the Greensboro community. The Carolinas Open is the longest running tournament held by the Carolinas PGA Section and has been played annually since 1923 when the Section was first founded in Greensboro, NC. Some of the best players in Carolinas PGA history including, Henry Picard, Johnny Palmer, Bobby Locke, Bob Boyd, and Kelly Mitchum have Set along scenic Lake Townsend, the Champions Course at Bryan Park was built to fulfill Mr. Joseph M. Bryan’s vision of having a national level golf course that was accessible to the public. The Champions Course at Bryan Park was designed by Rees Jones and features 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers and hollows, and seven holes along the lake. The Champions Course at Bryan Park was awarded Runner-up best new public golf course by Golf Digest in 1990. Carolinas PGA Tournament Director Cory Armstrong stated, “We are very excited about bringing the Carolinas Open to Bryan Park and the city of Greensboro. Bryan Park is a phenomenal 36-hole public facility. The Champions Course will challenge the field while providing a great playing experience. The CPGA sincerely thanks its partner Branch Bank & Trust for its generous support. We look forward to a long-lasting relationship between BB&T, Bryan Park, the city of Greensboro, and our Association.” The tournament format for the 88th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T is 54-hole stroke play with a cut to the low third and ties upon completion of 36 holes. The 88th Carolinas Open is an official 2012 CPGA Bob Boyd Player of the Year Points Challenge event. Spectators are always welcome and encouraged to come out and cheer on the field. Admission is free and first round tee times will be available at carolinas.pga.com on Thursday, May 3, 2012. The 88th Carolinas Open Pro-Am benefitting charity is the First Tee of the Triad. Last year, the Section was able to donate over $3,000 to the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.
