18th Tar Heel Cup Matches The Amateurs ended an eleven-year victory drought to capture the 18th Tar Heel Cup at the Dormie Club in West End, NC. They had not captured the cup since 2000. Leading after the Four-Ball matches on Monday by 2 points they hung on for a one point win. After nine holes it looked like it was going to be another win for the Professionals as the amateurs were behind in 6 of the 8 matches. Ryan Bell defeated John Thompson in the first match to pull the amateurs ahead 4 to 1. The Professionals then rallied to win four straight and took the lead 5 to 4. Paul Simson then came from 2 down after nine to defeat Oliver Peacock and even the score at 5 points each. Scott Harvey, in the last match of the day, closed out Charles Frost on the par three 16th to pull the amateurs ahead 6 to 5. All that was left to capture the cup was for Uly Grisette to halve his match with Gus Ulrich. Uly was 2 down after twelve but won the next three holes to go up by one. They halved the par three 16th, and then after Ulrich made par on the par 5 17th, Uly calmly rolled his birdie putt from just off the back of the green to within a foot of the hole. The putt was conceded by Gus and the Tar Heel Cup was secured. Ulrich birdied the last hole from a greenside bunker to tie Grisette and make the final score a one-point victory for the amateurs. The CPGA thanks the Professionals who qualified for the team and competed and congratulates the amateurs on their victory. The win was especially sweet for CGA Team Captain Ray Novicky who will be retiring from his position with the CGA at the end of 2012. The Tar Heel Cup is an annual competition between eight Carolinas PGA Section Members from North Carolina, and eight North Carolina Amateurs representing the Carolinas Golf Association. The first day consists of four Four-Ball Matches each worth one point. Day two is eight singles matches also valued at one point each. Matches tied at the end of 18 holes are awarded ½ point each. Stroke Play - Eagle Point The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America CPGA Senior Program Lewallen Wins at Old North State Rick Lewallen, PGA of Kannapolis, NC took advantage of the excellent weather and perfect course conditions to win the Old North State CPGA Senior Open held at Old North State Club in New London, NC. Lewallen shot a 69-69 for a total of 138 to finished two strokes over run-up Rick Morton, PGA of Jacksonville, NC. Pat Thompson of Asheville, NC capture the Overall Amateur contest with 74-68=142. Larry Boswell of Jamestown, NC was the winner of the Super Senior Division. Railing was a Class Updates A PGA member since and 1997, and a former member of the Carolinas Section. He was part of the Nike Golf footwear and equipment sales team and a member of North Florida PGA Section. Originally Announcements from Charlotte, North Carolina, Railing attended the PGM program at Mississippi State and became a PGA Professional. He is survived by his wife, Shannon, and four-year-old son, Carson. His funeral was held in Charlotte, NC on April 7, 2012. View obituary printed online Clyde “Tim” Collins, PGA Cylde “Tim” Collins, Life Member of the Carolinas PGA Section passed on April 17, 2012. Collins was elected to Class A PGA member status in 1976. After serving in the United States Army from 1969-1972, Tim gained his PGA Tour Card in 1972 and began his 21 year career as a tour player and club professional. He was a playing member of the PGA tour for three years and had several top-ten finishes in tour events. He competed in three US Opens and six PGA Championships. Tim and his family settled down in the Carolina’s in 1977 where he began work as a club professional. Tim dominated play as a member of the Carolinas PGA section winning four player of the year titles from 1977 through 1984. Three of those titles were consecutive. He also won five Carolina’s PGA major titles including two North Carolina Opens, two Section Championship Tournaments, and one Carolina’s Open Championship. Seminars outside The PGA or not on the approved list may be honored upon submission of documentation detailing the course content and length, as well as a certificate of completion or transcripts.
