Education and Academics Colorado Springs is a smart city. It ranks fourth in the nation for highest percentage of residents having high school diplomas, 93 percent of adults; 17th for Bachelor’s Degrees, 34 percent of adults. Money magazine named Colorado Springs the 16th Smartest City in America in 2006. There are more than 100,000 students enrolled in the public K-12 school system, and close to 30,000 enrolled in the largest universities and colleges, including the U.S. Air Force Academy. Thousands more attend the many post-secondary trade/vocational schools and smaller specialized colleges in the area. Throughout Colorado Springs and El Paso County, residents value education and put a lot of energy into learning. Higher Education Even before Colorado became a state, there was a college for the men and women of Colorado Springs. Colorado College became an educational institution in 1874, two years before Colorado became a state. The school began with a traditional New England learning model. All that changed in 1970 when the school entered into an innovative approach with eight three-anda-half week blocks for the academic year. Students take one class at a time, giving them the focused, immersion learning experience the school is renowned for all over the world. About 2,000 students attend. Colorado Technical University offers “career-centric degrees for today’s focused professionals.” The Colorado Springs campus emphasizes real-world education and has undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business, management, criminal justice, public administration, engineering, computer science, information science and technology. About 2,000 students attend. Pikes Peak Community College has three campuses and several education centers in Colorado Springs and was founded in 1967. The two-year public community college has transfer agreements with most four-year colleges and universities within University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Colorado’s fastest growing four-year university. the state of Colorado. It offers people a “fresh start” in pursuing academic careers, obtaining occupational training and cultivating interests through hundreds of courses and dozens of programs geared toward self-improvement through learning. About 10,000 students attend. Regis University is committed to the individual through a values-centered Jesuit education using innovative classroom and online methods. The school was founded in Denver in 1877 and has a Colorado Springs campus offering more than 10 undergraduate majors and three master’s degrees in business administration, computer information systems and management through its School for Professional Studies. About 1,500 students attend. University of Colorado Colorado Springs is the largest university in the area, one of the fastest growing in the nation, and one of “America’s Best Colleges.” U.S. News and World Report ranked UCCS seventh in 2007, among public universities offering mostly master’s and bachelor’s degrees in the Western United States, and in the top tier of all public and private master’s universities in the West. University of Phoenix reinvented higher education for working adults by pioneering its own approach for academic delivery. Two University of Phoenix campuses in Colorado Springs offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social and behavioral science, healthcare, business and technology with a mix of programs offered on campus and online. About 1,200 students attend. Webster University offers students small evening classes with fi ve nine-week terms at campuses in Colorado Springs and on Peterson Air Force Base. Degree programs include seven master’s degrees and a graduate certifi cate. Webster University also has an online program, and participates in two government/ military cooperative degree programs. About 300 students attend.
