Child Development Center and the R.P. Lee
Youth Center.
There is also a commissary, base
exchange, shoppette, post offi ce, chapels
for various religious services and a variety
of food kiosks and shops. Shopping options
on Peterson are expanding with the opening
of the new base exchange and commissary.
The estimated $40 million project is slated
to open June 5 near the East Gate.
The annual Peterson Air Show is much
anticipated and enjoyed throughout the
area. The event features something for all
ages. Vintage aircraft displays and demonstrations,
static displays of current military
aircraft from around the world, and
sky-diving exhibitions from the Air Force
Academy’s Wings of Blue are among the
highlights of the event. The U.S. Navy Blue
Angels, U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and
the Canadian Air Force Snow Birds have all
performed at the annual air show.
On-Base Housing
The Peterson Housing Offi ce is located in
Bldg. 850, Loring Ave., and is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
weekdays. Newcomers can expect a three to 18
month wait for base housing, depending on the
type of home eligibility. Relevant considerations
include one’s grade and family size. Advance
applications may be submitted from your current
location to the Peterson housing management
staff. Upon arrival, and before entering into any
rental/lease or purchase agreement, all are required
to stop by the base housing referral offi ce. Call

Off-Base Housing
Throughout Colorado Springs, the cost of
dwelling rentals can vary greatly. Low cost housing
and furnished apartments are limited. Utility costs
vary depending on house size and energy usage.
Natural gas remains the most commonly used
heating fuel. The monthly rent for an apartment
typically starts around $600 for one bedroom and
increases for multiple bedrooms. House rentals
start at $1,000 a month for three bedrooms and
increase with size and location. Utility costs are
not normally included in rentals, except with some
furnished apartments.
