If the phrase “work hard and play hard” is your mantra, then
Peterson has a lot to offer. It boasts an array of facilities for use by
DoD cardholders.
The on-base recreational opportunities for service-members and
their families at Peterson are many. Among the facilities and activities
available are an 18-hole golf course, a 20-lane bowling center, an
aquatic center, fi tness and sports center, six softball fi elds, a shooting
range, offi cer and enlisted clubs, ski shop and recreation supply
checkout, auto skills center, aero club and outdoor adventure program,
Silver Spruce is a well-maintained 18-hole, regulation golf course
located on Peterson. Originally established in 1973 as a 9-hole course,
it became an 18-hole course three years later. It offers challenges for
golfers of all skill levels including back tees (blue), regular tees (white),
ladies tees (red), and senior tees (yellow).
The Peterson Bowling Center was originally a 16-lane center built
in 1970 with a four-lane extension added in 1973. It features state-ofthe-art
computerized scoring on 20 AMF HPL synthetic lanes. Peterson
Lanes hosts a wide variety of bowling leagues; to include youth,
parent/child, men’s, ladies, mixed, organizational, senior, and travel
leagues. Additionally, open bowling is available during the day and
most evenings.
The Aquatic Center is currently closed while renovations are
underway. No need for avid swimmers to feel like fi sh out of water
as Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy have pools available for
military members, their families and retirees; as does the city of
Colorado Springs.
The Outdoor Recreation Center has a number of trips planned
with the novice adventurer in mind and offers plenty of challenges
for the advanced or experienced. Programs include downhill skiing,
fi shing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, white water
rafting, scuba diving and much more. The center also offers skiing
and snowboarding equipment, outdoor grills, camping equipment and
canoes for rent.
The 60,000-plus square foot Fitness Center features two
regulation-sized basketball/volleyball courts, two Cybex equipment
rooms, a free-weight and dumbbell room, fi ve racquetball courts,
aerobics room, spinning room, 1/12 mile indoor track, more than 70
pieces of cardiovascular equipment and two cardio theatres, a climbing
wall, six locker rooms including a DV locker room for men and
women, and a smoothie bar for post-workout refreshments.
The off-base opportunities, common to all U.S. military
installations in the area, make the outdoor enthusiast feel like royalty
surrounded by the beauty of all Colorado has to offer.
Mountain biking, hiking, climbing, rafting, skiing, hunting,
fi shing, attending AAA and professional sporting events, theater,
concerts and other arts and recreational opportunities are all within
easy reach for those with adventurous spirits.
