Why is it important for people to experiment with what they grow? The British diet has undergone a radical transformation in the past half century, going from over-boiled stodge to one of the most varied, exciting and international on earth. Yet when it comes to the newly cool concept of ‘growing your own’, we have become stuck in a pre-WWII time warp, with foodie growers thinking the only options are spuds, sprouts and swede. I think this is a shame, because with well over 2,000 edible crops thriving in the UK, there is no reason why we need to be stuck THE Reviewer BOOKS | BLOGS | BROADSHEETS | RADIO | TV | TWITTER | ONLINE 5 MINUTES WITH… James Wong The popular TV presenter tells us about his bestselling book to go with his new Suttons Seed range growing the allotment equivalent of powdered eggs and spam. I believe that the contents of our veg beds must catch up with that of our fridges. How did you choose which 120 unusual edibles to include in your trial for your new book? As a truly obsessive foodie, one of the most exciting aspects of the project was trawling the shelves of fancy London food halls and trendy farmers’ markets to come up with a list of unusual gourmet foods as potential candidates for my 24-month trial. I then stuck a star next to anything that hailed from a climate similar to the UK’s, and started testing them. What important lessons did you learn in the process? Never assume that just because something seems exotic, it automatically means it is difficult or impossible to grow in Britain. In fact, potatoes (which hail from the Cloud Forest of Peru and were cultivated by the Incas) are actually one of the most tropical crops that can be grown in the UK, whereas cocktail kiwis will shrug off chills as low as -35°C and grow on a north-facing wall. What did you enjoy most about this experiment and putting the book together? Eating! It was a huge amount of fun to experiment with all sorts of flavours - from fresh wasabi to bamboo shoots. If space is an issue, which are your must-grow edibles? Pretty high up on that list has to be the Chilean guava, an impossibly exotic pink berry that somehow fuses the flavours of wild strawberries, tropical guavas and candy floss. They are deceptively hardy, combining pool-side cocktail flavour with pretty, scented flowers and shiny evergreen leaves. I also have a soft spot for Inca berries. Mrs Beeton even had a jam recipe for them. Grow them outdoors just like an outdoor tomato. Other indispensable edibles include saffron, fresh green tea, wasabi and Tasmanian mountain peppers - all easy and perfect patio-sized ideas. What’s your next project? I am planning a new book on urban agriculture - reinventing old-school techniques from rearing chickens to raising bees for young city slickers with pint-sized plots. I call it ‘micro-farming’.
