Let’s be honest and agree that using a chainsaw isn’t for everyone. For that reason, I called in my gardening friend Shaun to help with this trial. It is far better to ask an experienced chainsaw operator than ‘give it a go’. That’s not to say these tools are only suitable for men, as many of the models we tested are fairly lightweight - however, they do seem to be the ultimate boys’ toys. Having said that, they are far from toys, Before any rip cords are pulled, safety gear needs to be a priority... Chainsaw trousers, leather gloves, steel-toe boots incredibly dangerous if used incorrectly, and can cause nasty accidents. As with mowers, there are different chainsaws to suit different situations. This trial covers just petrol and battery-powered models, but electric versions are available. All arrived boxed with their chains needing fitting. Chain oil is required for this, but it is a fairly straightforward task to set the saws up. The bar length of our selected range was between 30-35cm, making these saws ideal for entry-level use. Oil is the next issue, with two-stroke being the order of the day. To make life easier, I strongly suggest that you buy your oil and fuel from a garden machinery specialist. Before any rip cords are pulled, safety gear needs to be a priority. Chainsaw trousers, leather gloves, steel-toe boots, ear defenders, hard hat, goggles and a bright jacket are all essential. Don’t risk going ahead without any of the above, and always read the instructions carefully. 24 the english garden February 2013 . 1 Balance bar The Husqvarna 135, 40.9cc chainsaw has a 35cm bar. Cuts well and weighs 4.4kg with a 1.4kw power output. Good labelling on the machine and instructions were exceptional. Easy to start, and the engine is designed for lower fuel consumption. I wasn’t so keen on the sound of this saw and, although it was well balanced, we were conscious of vibration. The snap-lock cylinder cover is ideal for easy maintenance. Good value. Husqvarna Forest Jackets cost from £61.99. PRICE £249.99 2 Easy start The Makita two-stroke 32cc chainsaw (EA3201) was a really well-balanced machine, which was a near winner. We found this the easiest of the petrol models to start, and it was very low on vibration, making it comfortable to use over a fairly long period. It is described as an entry-level model, but it really appealed to experienced users, so well worth considering - especially at such a good price. Weighs just 4.3kgs and has a very meaty sound. The new electronic ignition system that controls stable idling was a good feature. The bar length is 35cm and all parts are easily accessible for maintenance. A good all-rounder, but I would have liked a few more instruction stickers on the machine itself, just as easy reminders. 3 4 2 1 editor’s choice: chainsaws Battery power The Bosch AKE 30Li is powered by a rechargeable battery and has a 30cm long bar. It will appeal to those who don’t want to enter the world of fuel or rip cords - simply push button to start. Bosch claim it can cut up to 100 ‘fence posts ‘ with a full battery and it only takes 1.5 hours to fully recharge. The quietest of all the models, it is unlikely to upset the neighbours; it sounds more like a cake mixer! More suited to heavy pruning rather than logging, this option is environmentally friendly and lower maintenance. You can transport it without emptying fuel, so all in all, it is cleaner. Comes with an automatic lubrication system for the chain and an electric kick-back break. I really liked the battery indicator, which clearly shows how much battery is left. A neat saw, ideal for domestic use. A shame it was heaviest at 5.2kg. PRICE £339.95 February 2013 the english garden 25 3
