Immediately after <strong>the</strong> first meet<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />

group of experts visited <strong>the</strong> Moscow Research<br />

Institute for Viral Preparations <strong>and</strong> Wyeth<br />

Laboratories, Philadelphia, two of <strong>the</strong><br />

major <strong>vacc<strong>in</strong>e</strong> contributors, to observe <strong>the</strong><br />

production process <strong>and</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> produc-<br />

tion data. The f<strong>in</strong>al meet<strong>in</strong>g was held at<br />

Wyeth Laboratories. The draft of <strong>the</strong> manual<br />

on <strong>the</strong> methodology of <strong>vacc<strong>in</strong>e</strong> production<br />

was carefully reviewed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light of <strong>the</strong><br />

visits. Agreement was reached on a document<br />

entitled Methodology of Freeze-dried Smallpox<br />

Vacc<strong>in</strong>e Production, <strong>the</strong> first report to describe<br />

simple <strong>and</strong> practical methods for <strong>the</strong> produc-<br />

tion <strong>and</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g of freeze-dried <strong>vacc<strong>in</strong>e</strong>.<br />

Although never officially published, it con-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong>ed all <strong>the</strong> necessary <strong>in</strong>formation at a level<br />

of detail not provided elsewhere <strong>and</strong> was<br />

made widely available as a document of <strong>the</strong><br />

Smallpox Eradication unit (SEl68.3 Rev. 2),<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g distributed to all laboratories <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production of freeze-dried <strong>smallpox</strong><br />

<strong>vacc<strong>in</strong>e</strong>. Its contents are summarized below.<br />
