The first section <strong>of</strong> Chapter Five <strong>the</strong>n exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accreditation<br />

system and argues that <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong> accreditation agencies and <strong>the</strong><br />

agencies were <strong>of</strong>, by, and for <strong>the</strong> higher education sector; <strong>the</strong>y were used by schools <strong>of</strong><br />

high quality to dist<strong>in</strong>guish <strong>the</strong>mselves from o<strong>the</strong>r, less prestigious <strong>in</strong>stitutions. This<br />
