commonly used synonym in the U.S. for a lacquer disc;

acetate base {E} * A generic name for the group of
materials which are the more common supports of
magnetic and film media to which various recording
surfaces are attached. Most commonly used of this group
were/are cellulose diacetate and cellulose triacetate.
Cellulose triacetate, generally used for magnetic tape
recordings prior to the wide acceptance of polyester, tends
to break rather than stretch when subjected to excessive
stress. Since breaks can be mended easily and cleanly,
acetate backing offers some insurance against
mishandling, such as stretching. Mylar, a polyester,
however, has superior qualities as a backing, and acetate
is no longer used. In still photography and motion picture
films, a base composed principally of cellulose diacetate
or cellulose triacetate have been widely used for safety
