Drug Interaction<br />
A change in a drug’s effect on the body when taken with certain other<br />
drugs, supplements, or food, or when taken together with certain<br />
medical conditions. A drug interaction may cause the drug to be less<br />
effective, cause adverse effects, or increase the action <strong>of</strong> the drug.<br />
Potential drug interactions are considered when selecting antiretroviral<br />
(ARV) drugs to include in an <strong>HIV</strong> treatment regimen.<br />

effective. Drug resistance can be a cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong> treatment failure.<br />

Drug Synergism<br />

An interaction between two or more drugs that causes the total effect<br />
<strong>of</strong> the drugs to be greater than the sum <strong>of</strong> the individual effects <strong>of</strong><br />
each drug. A synergistic effect can be beneficial or harmful.<br />
