Facing competition
from other events
and expecting a
lower financial
outcome than last year
didn’t stop the Elmira
Kiwanis from holding
their own at the 5 th annual
Waterloo Region Dragon
Boat Festival on July 20.
“Probably the traffic
numbers were down
slightly, [but] I think there
was a lot of competition on
Saturday given the
Ontario Summer Games
and the Cambridge
Highland Games. I think
that we certainly held our
own against them… teams
were good, everybody had
a good day and I think that
bodes well for next year so
we’re looking forward to
going on from here,” said
president Tony Dowling.
“We certainly feel that we
had a great day. The
weather cooperated, we had
no boat dumpings,
everything just seemed to
flow well. I think that it was
our best logistics and
timing and good luck that
we’ve had so far with this
event.”
The University of
Toronto Piranhas won the
championship race for the
second year in a row, this
time by 2/100 th of a second
in a time of 2:15.55
minutes. Dowling said
they are a perfect example
of how the Waterloo festival
is able to attract both
top level teams and those
who are just out for a good
time, something that organizers
will continue to try
and maintain for further
festivals. He added it also
speaks to the fact that
competition is building
and that even the more-recreational
teams’ skill levels
are increasing.
“The Piranhas have done
a great job of getting out
there and racing but they
certainly have some good
competition – not even on
their tail but right on their
nose,” said Dowling.
“We cover the gamut
from teams that are just
coming out to have a good
time and teams like the Piranhas
and the Screamin’
Demons and the Assante
Hammerheads, who are
certainly very highly
competitive and good
quality teams. We don’t
want to get too focused on
either side. I think we want
that high level of
competition. On the other
hand we want the teams
that are coming out for fun
too.”
This seemed to be the case
with the three teams orga-
