Strong competition at games
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17) played the same team be-
Cable continued to be at
some of the events
throughout the weekend,
highlighting the strong
level of competition at
the games. In the gold
medal matches that both
the rugby and lacrosse
teams played Sunday, the
opponents were tough
and overall play strong.
“The final was probably
the most challenging
definitely because
both teams were really
wanting it badly. We had
fore… because we just
both wanted it and it
was Toronto and they
have a lot drive too,” explained
Hatherton of the
rugby final.
Taves’ team faced off
for a second time against
the Kawartha team in
their gold medal match,
which she described as
the toughest of the tournament.
“The first game that
we played them we tied
them 5 – 5, I think. The
second game was the
gold medal game and
they beat us in that game
– it was quite a tough
match,” she explained.
“They’re a quick team.
They’re quick-handed
and they’re really quick
at running. They had
some good players and
actually I think that
some of the girls…
couldn’t go to the first
game that we played
them so we didn’t know
the first couple girls that
joined in that one game.”
There is opportunity
for repeat performances
or vindication for many
of the local athletes,
who will still be young
enough to play at the
next summer games, to
be held in London in
2004.
“I just thought it was a
really great experience –
really fulfilling. If anybody
else has the chance
to go out – not necessarily
for rugby but for anything
– it’s a very good
experience,” said Schill.
