many decades, soil analyses are carried out to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> medium- to long-term<br />

P supply<strong>in</strong>g capacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>forest</strong> ecosystems. Hence, <strong>the</strong>re is a need to review <strong>the</strong><br />

currently available methods used to assess <strong>the</strong>ir limitations and advantages with<br />

regard to this objective.<br />

This review will consider a number <strong>of</strong> issues raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction, which will<br />

<strong>the</strong>n lead to suggestions for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> appropriate methods for future studies<br />

where medium- to long-term <strong>changes</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P <strong>status</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>forest</strong> soils are to be<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigated.<br />
