Today’s readings:
Isaiah 53:10-11 Hebrews 4:14-16 Mark 10:35-45
Today’s gospel begins with the chutzpah of James and John, Zebedee’s
sons, who want a guarantee that they’ll sit at Jesus’ right and left in
your glory. The moral of the story is often remembered to be—a little
humility here, no one has the right to ask that!
A deeper lesson is contained in Jesus response to the brothers:
You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and
their great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will
be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son
of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
The heart of Christian faith lies in that explanation of what it means to die with him. To be
of service to others is what is asked of us. That concept runs through the documents of the
Second Vatican Council.
While it hardly seems unusual today, the document on Ecumenism was a break from many
of past Church approaches. Pope John XXIII had a lived experience with a Church that was
not hospitable or willing to break boundaries. He was more interested in forging relationships,
reconciling hostilities and building bridges of understanding than he was in judging,
ostracizing or condemning. That approach has seen fruition in our community—C4! The
Colesville Council of Community Organizations operates the Clothes Closet, the Baby Closet,
and the Toy Closet at Christmas time. St. John’s is proud to be one of its founding members.

Pumpkin Liturgy and Sock Hop
Father Glen Willis will preside at the Pumpkin
Liturgy next Saturday, October 27 at 5 p.m. in the
Church. Everyone is invited to bring a carved
pumpkin ready with a candle inside to the
sanctuary steps before the Liturgy begins. (Adult
volunteers will light the candles.)

remember to take them home
after Mass. Following the
Pumpkin Liturgy, the Knights
of Columbus will sponsor
our annual Sock Hop from
6-9 p.m. in the Gym. Cost is
$5 per family with a can of

Fr. Ladislas Orsy, SJ is Professor of Law at
Georgetown University, has authored nine books
including Receiving the Council, and served as a
theological advisor at the Second Vatican Council.

Fifty Years Later, the Council Lives
Please join us as we celebrate the
50th Anniversary of Vatican II with a lecture by
Fr. Ladislas Orsy, SJ Saturday, November 3,
3:30 p.m. in the Hall. Following the lecture,
Fr. Orsy will celebrate the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass.

Altar servers are invited along with servers from other
parishes to attend a special Mass in their honor on Sunday
afternoon, November 18 at 2 p.m. at the Basilica of
the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Most
Reverend Barry Knestout will be the main celebrant and
homilist. The event is sponsored annually by the Serra
Clubs of the Archdiocese of Washington as a tribute to
altar servers for their contribution to the liturgical life of
the Church. Each server attending will receive a certificate
of appreciation acknowledging his or her service.

How Can Our Faith Impact Public Policy and
Poverty in Montgomery County ?

“The Outlook for Poverty and Human Services Programs
in Montgomery County—Moving Our Faith to Action.”
Uma Ahluwalia, Director of the Montgomery County
Department of Health and Human Services will discuss
the impact of budgetary constraints on housing, transportation,

we as people of faith can speak up for the needs of poor

Sodality Bake Sale
Sodality’s annual Fall bake sale will be held on

Month at C-4 Clothes Closet
Help is needed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and especially
on Fridays. The Closet is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on
Tuesdays and Fridays; Thursdays are restocking days.

Join Us for “Spaghetti Knight” on October 26
Looking for an evening off from cooking?
Would you like to help a local charity at
the same time? The SJB Knights of
Columbus will be serving some delicious
spaghetti, lasagna, salad and garlic
bread in the Lyon Center on October 26,
from 6 to 9 p.m. Proceeds will go to Church-supported
charities, including funding to help defray costs for a
young seminarian. Bring a hearty appetite, because it is
all-you-can-eat for $8 per person, $4 for children under
12. All are welcome.

Feeding the Hungry—In conjunction with
World Hunger Day (October 16) and their
annual Service Liturgy, the students from
SJB are collecting food items for the
people served by the St. Camillus
Food Pantry. Items most in need
include: macaroni and cheese, canned tuna, oatmeal,
white rice and dried black beans, corn flakes and cheerios,
canned corn and peas, vegetable oil, pasta and spaghetti
sauce, dried milk and shelf stable milk.
Delivery is this week. If you’d like to contribute,
please bring your items to the school office or the Food
Pantry in the back of church.
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming
to SJB! Please come to the Book Fair
after the 9, 10:30 a.m. and noon
Masses on November 11, in the main
hallway of the school. There is a
wonderful selection of books for all
ages and they make great gifts for
Christmas. Computer games and
posters are also available for purchase.
All proceeds benefit the SJB School
Library but the real winners are those who receive the
books. Cash and checks only, sorry no credit cards.
School Renovation—Marianne Moore, our school
principal, invites parishioners to come and see first hand
the proposed renovation plans. She will be available on
Monday, October 22, from 8:45 -10 a.m. or on Tuesday,
October 23, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Christmas is Coming! The SJB eighth grade class is
selling pre-ordered live-cut Christmas wreaths and other
Collegiality refers to the decision of the Council that the
Governance of the Church should be in the hands of the
Pope acting in concert with all of the bishops. During the
Council it became clear that the bishops of the
world wanted to take more responsibility for
the world-wide church and to act more collegially
through National Bishops Conferences.
A collaborative relationship between the
clergy and laity was to become the norm in the
Church, recognizing that the priesthood of the
Baptized was the essential characteristic of all
the People of God. This relationship between
priests and people would eliminate clericalism.
This change conferred on the laity rights
festive decorations. A representative will be at the
Knight’s Breakfast today, October 21,
to take orders. There are brochures
and a sample wreath for you to
view. If you are unable stop by
the Lyon Center today, pick up
a brochure/order form in the

Vatican II—Key Issues Arising from the Council
such as a greater say in the structure of governance in
parish and diocesan affairs while it also, however,
equally conferred responsibilities.
The importance of Christian unity featured
prominently in the discussions of the Council
and was followed by an upsurge in collaborative
ecumenical projects. Many such projects
still continue and provide a real Christian
presence in communities.
A comprehensive revision to the liturgy
which the bishops decreed should be translated
into vernacular languages in a comprehensible
idiom as a means of bringing the
liturgy closer to the people.

Centering Prayer;
Plunge into the Silent Love of God
A group dedicated to the ancient practice of
contemplation has formed here at St. John’s.
We practice Centering Prayer. It is a way
of prayer in which we let go of thoughts
and rest in God through pure faith. We
meet every Tuesday night in the Parish
Center Conference Room from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The TASTE Program
(Taste And See Take…Eat) is a Catholic women’s program
dedicated to bringing women closer to Jesus and
the Church. Classes meet every Thursday morning 9 to
11:30 a.m. through May 9. Attend 9 a.m. Mass at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church, 114 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel,
then cross the street to St Vincent Palloti High School
where the program is held in the School Chapel. This
week’s TASTE speaker is Fr. Mike Paris, Parochial Vicar at
St. Patrick’s. The topic is Discerning The Will Of God. Babysitting

learn about our most basic belief in what grace is and

There is an ancient tradition that has pre-
served a saying attributed to Jesus, perhaps
one of many lost to us in the Gospel
writings: “He who is near me is near
fire”… We stay mostly at “arm’s
length” from the fire by praying
with words, words, words.
We must willingly enter into it with both feet,
freed from the shackles of words and images.
Every word we utter is, by its very definition, limited… There
is no greater false security than to believe we can “grasp God”
by thoughts or concepts. Meanwhile our infinitely humble God
“paces the cages” we have so methodically fashioned for him,

ast weekend was a busy one for Youth Ministry at
St. John’s. On Saturday evening about 200 middle
school students from SJB as well as neighboring
parishes crowded our gym for the most spectacular
dance in recent memory. The Glow in the Dark theme was
a big hit. Black lighted décor and multi-colored LED
lights glowed as the students, glow sticks in hand,
danced the night away.
On Sunday Bishop Barry Knestout presided as the 42
members of the 2012 confirmation class were confirmed
at a beautiful ceremony and Mass.
This weekend will prove to be just as busy as middle
and high school students participate in the Hunger
Games Retreat and more students volunteer at the Army
Ten Miler run this morning. The youth of St. John the
Baptist are very busy!
Social Justice Presentation
On Sunday, October 28, the Director of Outreach for the
United States’ Bishops Department of Peace, Justice, and
Human Development, will be joining forces with a member
of our own Social Justice Ministry to pilot an interactive
new program for teens that’s been developed to help
teens better understand the challenges faced by those
living in poverty and how we, as Christians, are called
to respond. The Confirmation Class of 2013 and their
parents will attend a session at 4 p.m., and then the High
School Youth Group will get to do the program at their
regularly scheduled time of 7 p.m.

Volunteer Opportunities
Musicians and Vocalists for Youth
Band—Those of you who attended
the last Youth Mass know that we
could use more musicians and singers.
Please consider lending your gifts.
The goal is to put on a more dynamic
liturgy featuring more upbeat music
picked out by the teens themselves... but we need YOUR
talents to do so! Also, students are needed to help out as
lectors, ushers, and greeters. Please contact Michael Bayer
if you are interested in volunteering to help with the Youth
Mass in any of these ways. After tonight, the next Youth
Mass is next Sunday, November 18, at 6 p.m.
Catechist’s Aide—Many of our catechists have expressed
an interest in having a high school or college aged student
assist them. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the
teens, and the younger kids really love seeing a younger
person helping out.
Casserole Night—As part of an ongoing
relationship with Elizabeth
House, SJB provides monthly meals
that can be picked up by working
families struggling to make ends
meet. The students bring one ingredient
each, and then make simple
meals together in the Gym Kitchen.
It’s a lot of fun, and fulfills both Confirmation and MCPS
SSL requirements. Our next Casserole Night is Thursday,
October 25, at 7 p.m. To sign up, please contact our
Coordinator of Faith Formation, Alison Fram.

The Academy of the Holy Cross, 4920 Strathmore Avenue,
