We, the Church of St. Clement Mary Hofbauer, in the Rosedale neighborhood of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, 

are messengers of the Word of God. Through our celebration of the Eucharist and public prayer, we live out the faith 

that has been entrusted to us. That faith calls us to build up the Body of Christ present in our neighborhood.

St. Clement Mary Hofbauer The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 18, 2013 

Quite a few have asked, and so I will share a bit 

about my recent trip to San Antonio, Texas. It is a 

city I have long hoped to visit, but not in August. 

It was at least 100 degrees every day, and two 

days set new records for the date. However, the 

first few days were mostly inside at the Knights of 

Columbus Supreme Convention so it didn’t matter 

too much. Each time I have had the opportunity to 

attend one of these conventions I have enjoyed the 

spirit of fraternity, the organization of the 

program, and what the Knights are able to 

accomplish as a collective group. Some of us who 

have been state chaplains for several years have 

gotten to know one another, and so it is a bit of a 

reunion as well. The liturgies are always well 

done, and the chance to learn about what is going 

on in other states and other countries is interesting. 

This past year the K of C made the first steps into 

Lithuania and the Ukraine, joining the expansion 

of a few years ago into Poland. There has been a 

long presence of the Knights in Canada, Mexico, 

the Philippines and Cuba. Among other topics, we 

learned about the progress of the Shrine to Blessed 

John Paul II in Washington, DC that is now run by 

the Knights, and previewed a “made-for-TV” 

movie about the life of Pope Francis that the 

Knights have sponsored. 

The convention ended Thursday morning and I relocated 

to the friary in San Antonio. On the way I 

had a chance to visit the string of missions started 

by the Friars in the 1730s, and these are again 

operating as parishes. The last one I visited serves 

as the Cathedral of the City today, and while the 

building has been expanded one can see the 

original part in the sanctuary. Visited the Alamo 

(also originally a mission), the site of that famous 

battle where Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and so 

many others died. And of course toured the 

famous Riverwalk, which is really quite nice. It 

was about 103 degrees that day, so a little tough 

walking around, but we persevered. 

On Friday visited the town of Panna Maria, about 

an hour from San Antonio. It was the first Polish 

settlement in this country, in 1854, and one of our 

Conventual Friars was the guiding force and is 

buried there. It is a place I have heard about for so 

long it was interesting to see. Also visited the 

Oblate School of Theology where some of our 

Friars have studied; it is an impressive campus. 

Driving around the area is an experience as well. 

The big city highways are fairly typical, but it was 

especially going to Panna Maria that I noticed a 

difference from Baltimore—dual lane highways, 

sometimes with speeds of 65 and 70, and then 

traffic lights! They gave a new meaning to 

defensive driving. 

Certainly worth visiting San Antonio and the 

Southwest, but won’t recommend summertime for 

it.

Our Parish Spiritual Library is located in the church 

narthex. Patrons are asked to fill in a simple form 

with name and contact information (which will be 

kept in the Parish Office). Then, one can check out 

a book by signing the card in the back pocket, and 

placing that card in the check-out basket. Please try 

to return the book in 2-3 weeks. Returned books can 

be placed in the marked location on a lower shelf. 

There will also be a shelf with magazines; these can 

be borrowed and do not have to be signed out.

Church, especially the gift of Holy Communion.

Ocean to Ocean Icon Visit 

Human Life International and Holy Rosary Parish 

in Baltimore invite everyone to a welcoming 

ceremony for the icon of Our Lady of 

Czestochowa (the Black Madonna) to be held on 

August 24 th at the church, 408 S. Chester Street, 

Baltimore 21231. 

The replica of the Black Madonna icon has 

traveled over 40 thousand miles since the start of 

the “Ocean to Ocean” campaign one year ago in 

Vladivostok, Russia. She has traversed 24 

countries, visited 75 cathedrals, 60 Orthodox 

churches, 400 cities, and is now poised to cross 

the Atlantic on her global pilgrimage. She has 

drawn great crowds, inspired hundreds of 

thousands along the way, and has brought 

Orthodox and Catholics together for the protection 

of life and family. This ambitious pro-life and 

pro-family campaign, entitled “From Ocean to 

Ocean”, is being carried out for the first time in 

history and will last for several months, thereby 

exemplifying the campaigns’ motto—“East and 

West in Defense of Life!” 

The icon was blessed by the Archbishop of 

Czestochowa in a ceremony at the monastery of 

Jasna Gora and entrusted by the Archbishop of 

Cracow for the cause of the defense of life and 

family. In addition, her pilgrimage was endorsed 

by Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox 

Church. 

As you know the Shrine of Our Lady of 

Czestochowa is the most holy and visited of all the 

national shrines in Poland. Indeed, every year 

millions of people from all the corners of the 

world travel to Poland to visit the icon. We, at the 

Holy Rosary, in the midst of celebrating our 125 th 

Anniversary, are honored to have the unique 

chance to meet the Blessed Mother with the visit 

of the replica icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa.

Church”. Sister Simone believes that Vatican II 

was a Holy Spirit time that continues to inspire 

and encourage us to live in right relationship with 

each other and the earth. 

Dr. Massimo Faggioli: Assistant professor of 

theology, University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, 

MN). His primary specialties are in history of 

Christianity and Second Vatican Council. Author 

of: True Reform: Liturgy and Ecclesiology in 

Sacrosanctum Concilium (Liturgical Press, 2012) 

and Vatican II: The Battle of Meaning (Paulist, 

2012) 

Fr. Ray East will preside at Liturgy to be 

celebrated at 4:30 PM. Fr. East from the 

Archdiocese of Washington is a nationally known 

inspirational speaker and revivalist. He is pastor 

of St. Therese of Avila parish in South-West 

Washington, a vibrant African American Catholic 

community deeply engaged in a plethora of 

ministries for its members and for its surrounding 

neighborhoods. He has worked in the areas of 

Liturgy, Youth Ministry, Initiation and 

Evangelization.


Memorial Mass for Fr. Capodanno 

The Memorial Mass for Father Vincent 

Capodanno, MM will take place at 6:30 PM on 

Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at the Crypt 

Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of 

the Immaculate Conception, Washington 

D.C. Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Archbishop 

for the Military Services, will be the main 

celebrant. This annual Mass is celebrated in 

memory of Father Capodanno who was killed on a 

battlefield in Vietnam on September 4, 1967, as he 

gave physical and spiritual assistance to the dying 

Marines of the 1 st Marine Division. Father 

Capodanno posthumously received the Medal of 

Honor, and in May 2006 the Catholic Church 

officially proclaimed him a Servant of God 

formally initiating his Cause for Sainthood. All 

are invited to attend the Memorial Mass on the 

46 th anniversary of his death. Military members 

are encouraged to wear uniform of the day; 

civilian dress is business attire.
