BASILICA OF THE ASSUMPTION
From the Desk
of the Rector
Please join me in offering
our mothers’ a Happy
Mother’s Day. Throughout
the month of May, the
Church invites us to honor
Our Blessed Mother. The
beautiful tradition of May
Processions and the May
crowning of Our Lady provide us with the opportunity
to contemplate the role of the Blessed
Mother in salvation history and her continued intercession
for the Church today. Whenever we
honor Holy Mary she leads us to her Son, Christ
the Lord. Whenever we honor our mothers, we
honor and show respect for the gift of life.
Next Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. There is an
insert in this week’s bulletin listing the ministry
opportunities in our parish. I encourage all our
parishioners and potential parishioners to prayerfully
consider how each one of us can commit to
become actively involved in ministry. Having the
received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first
Pentecost, the disciples responded by proclaiming
the Gospel, witnessing to the Lord in service and
gathering to worship. We are blessed to worship
in our beautiful and historic Basilica, “America’s
Cathedral.” Having accepted the grace and blessings
of Baptism and Confirmation we need also
embrace the responsibilities to proclaim and to
serve so that our worship is authentic.
Following each Mass on Pentecost Weekend members
of the Basilica staff and volunteers will host
the annual Ministry Fair on the Portico. All parishioners
and potential parishioners are invited to
enjoy time to socialize and learn of the many and
various ministry options available in our parish.
Please plan to join us for the social, to learn about
the possibilities to serve and prayerfully commit to
the mission. I know that the Holy Spirit continues
to empower the Church and calls each of us to
serve. There is a place for you and a need for your
participation at the Basilica parish.
God bless you,
ASCENSION OF THE LORD
MAY 12TH, 2013
by Jeff Allan
Ascension of the Lord
Second Reading, Ephesians 1:17-23
Saint James elaborates on the fruits of wisdom:
"The wisdom that is from above, first indeed is
chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full
of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation" (James
3:17). Anyone having such qualities surely possesses a most blessed knowledge of
the Lord. The eyes of the heart portion of this Reading points to something similar
to what was covered in the First Reading: exercising the spiritual life and coming
to the knowledge of the glory that awaits us by keeping our gaze fixed on the
prize and being in awe of the greatness of Almighty God. This is a deep absorption
in prayer which many of the saints have attested leads to a wonderful closeness
with our Lord. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that "by
prayer every baptized person works for the coming of the Kingdom" (CCC
2632). This can be a difficult Reading to follow because much is covered in a
lengthy sentence. Think of it as a blessing -- something you would bow your head
to as these words are being prayed over you. It's mind boggling that in this vast
universe each and every one of us is crucial. Jesus in His humility willed that He
would be incomplete without His Mystical Body. Humanity has been raised up
higher than all of God's earthly creation to be participants in Christ's work of redemption.
Poor Box contributions the weekend of May 11 th and 12 th will be donated
to support Our Daily Bread. Initiated at the Basilica and now
sponsored by Catholic Charities, Our Daily Bread feeds the hungry 365
days a year and hosts a very successful employment program.
Thank you for your support.
Please remember the poor and the aged in our community by
making a donation of non-perishable food items and placing them
in the basket at the back of the church. Proceeds are provided to
the Assisi House of Sacred Heart/St. Patrick’s Food Pantry to
serve the needy in the community. The Assisi House Food Pantry sincerely appreciates
the generosity of the Basilica Parish in assisting them in providing food
distributions to those most in need, especially now. ~ Thank You!
