Ocean to Ocean Icon Visit
Human Life International and Holy Rosary Parish
in Baltimore invite everyone to a welcoming
ceremony for the icon of Our Lady of
Czestochowa (the Black Madonna) to be held on
August 24 th at the church, 408 S. Chester Street,
Baltimore 21231.
The replica of the Black Madonna icon has
traveled over 40 thousand miles since the start of
the “Ocean to Ocean” campaign one year ago in
Vladivostok, Russia. She has traversed 24
countries, visited 75 cathedrals, 60 Orthodox
churches, 400 cities, and is now poised to cross
the Atlantic on her global pilgrimage. She has
drawn great crowds, inspired hundreds of
thousands along the way, and has brought
Orthodox and Catholics together for the protection
of life and family. This ambitious pro-life and
pro-family campaign, entitled “From Ocean to
Ocean”, is being carried out for the first time in
history and will last for several months, thereby
exemplifying the campaigns’ motto—“East and
West in Defense of Life!”
The icon was blessed by the Archbishop of
Czestochowa in a ceremony at the monastery of
Jasna Gora and entrusted by the Archbishop of
Cracow for the cause of the defense of life and
family. In addition, her pilgrimage was endorsed
by Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox
Church.
As you know the Shrine of Our Lady of
Czestochowa is the most holy and visited of all the
national shrines in Poland. Indeed, every year
millions of people from all the corners of the
world travel to Poland to visit the icon. We, at the
Holy Rosary, in the midst of celebrating our 125 th
Anniversary, are honored to have the unique
chance to meet the Blessed Mother with the visit
of the replica icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa.
The Schedule:
Saturday, August 24
v 7:30 PM – Welcoming ceremony held on
the corner of Chester St. and Aliceanna St.
near the waterfront, next to Captain James
Restaurant. Immediately following, there
will be a procession to Holy Rosary
Church.
v 8:00 PM – Mass at Holy Rosary Church
by Most Reverend Denis J. Madden
v 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM Rosary and special
Devotion to Our Lady of Czestochowa in
English/Polish
v 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM Church Open for
personal prayer

Simone Campbell, SSS, is the Executive Director
of NETWORK, a national Catholic social justice
lobby. She is also a poet, a lawyer and advocate.
On September 8 th she will gift us with her
enthusiasm of what she calls “our beloved
Church”. Sister Simone believes that Vatican II
was a Holy Spirit time that continues to inspire
and encourage us to live in right relationship with
each other and the earth.
Dr. Massimo Faggioli: Assistant professor of
theology, University of St. Thomas (St. Paul,
MN). His primary specialties are in history of
Christianity and Second Vatican Council. Author
of: True Reform: Liturgy and Ecclesiology in
Sacrosanctum Concilium (Liturgical Press, 2012)
and Vatican II: The Battle of Meaning (Paulist,
2012)
Fr. Ray East will preside at Liturgy to be
celebrated at 4:30 PM. Fr. East from the
Archdiocese of Washington is a nationally known
inspirational speaker and revivalist. He is pastor
of St. Therese of Avila parish in South-West
Washington, a vibrant African American Catholic
community deeply engaged in a plethora of
ministries for its members and for its surrounding
neighborhoods. He has worked in the areas of
Liturgy, Youth Ministry, Initiation and
Evangelization.
