SOCIETY OF
AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS
http://wichita.same.org JANUARY— MARCH 2013
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
We’re about to embark upon the second
quarter of the calendar year as I write
this and we’ve had many great successes
thus far in 2013, of which all of us
associated with the Wichita Mountains
Post can be proud. The “newest” news
is that this is the very first newsletter
ever for the Wichita Mountains Post!
Plus, we had a tremendous number of
successes during 2012 and the first
quarter of 2013 that we can all take
great pride in, all of which are newsworthy!
First off, we were named Distinguished
Post for 2012! On top of that, it
was announced on March 27th that we
were named Top Small Post in the world
for SAME in 2012, out of 35 small Posts!
Many thanks to Rick West for being our
President in 2011 and 2012, as we got
our start as a new Post and as we developed
the framework for the Post, plus
thanks to the entire Board of Directors
for the Post during the inaugural period
as well. Thanks to all of our members
and prospective members who supported
the Post in so many ways, attending
meetings, volunteering to support our
youth, and providing financial support as
we began our journey as a new Post.
And there are even greater things ahead
for our Post in the years to come!
For early 2013, support for our Post endeavors
in January and February was
fantastic! We had several volunteers
involved as judges for the Future City
competition held at Oklahoma Christian
University in Edmond for grade school
students on Saturday, January 19th, and
a large number of volunteers involved as
proctors and graders for the MATH-
COUNTS competition at Cameron University
in Lawton for 6th thru 8th grade students
on Saturday, February 2nd. In
addition, our March luncheon attendance
of over 50 people at Fort Sill was
terrific!
We always have great sponsorship opportunities
for our sustaining member
firms affiliated with the Post. Our luncheon
sponsorships are great opportunities
to highlight your firm, so feel free to

firm would like to sponsor an upcoming luncheon.
If you’re not already a member of our Post, feel
free to also contact Rick Bond for information on
how to join!
Our upcoming meetings will be in Altus on April
12th and at Sheppard AFB on May 9th. I look forward
to great attendance at both of these meetings!
If you have any comments or suggestions pertaining
to any of our proposed activities during 2013,
any time as well.
Hope to see you at a SAME event soon, and please
invite your friends and co-workers to tag along with
you!
POST NEWS
The Wichita Mountains Post of the Society
of American Military Engineers (SAME) donated
three checks to Wounded Warrior
families and families at Fort Sill Army Post,
as well as Sheppard and Altus Air Force Bases,
in ceremonies December 19.
Rick West, 2012 Wichita Mountains Post
SAME President, presented a check to Ms.
Brenda Spencer-Ragland, Director of Fort
Sill Morale Welfare and Recreation, for dispensation.
Half of the funds went toward
support of Wounded Warrior families and the
other half to families of uniformed soldiers
with specialized or un-met needs. CPT Michael
Carroll, Commander of the Warrior in
Transition Unit (WTU), has also been involved
in the WMP SAME Post’s efforts to
provide assistance to local Wounded Warriors.
The donations are meant to give back
to those who have or are currently serving to
protect our freedom
Jeff Kindschuh, 2012 Wichita Mountains Post
SAME Vice President, presented a $1,500
check from the Wichita Mountains Post to the

WICHITA MOUNTAINS POST HELPS WOUNDED WARRIORS
The Altus AFB First Sergeants Council at their 7
am meeting December 19th for support of two
selected airmen. The First Sergeants Council
expressed great appreciation for the support
this holiday season of our military personnel.
“Please pass along my gratitude and thanks to
your organization. I know these Airmen, and
they are both working through some unique
challenges in their personal lives. We truly appreciate
all of your support!” stated CMSgt
Fish.
At Sheppard, Wichita Mountains SAME Post
secretary Melissa Guillory, Post programs coordinator
Billy Tramel and 366th Training Squadron
electrical flight chief Master Sgt. Derrell
Guillory presented a $3,000 check to Master
Sgt. John Van Pelt, 366th TRS first sergeant
and Sheppard First Sergeant’s Group treasurer,
for distribution to Sheppard families.
Ten families spread around the three bases
received a total donation of $12,500. Donations
received after the last check was written
will be donated to the Wounded Warrior’s program
at Fort Sill in future.
“This is not only a great opportunity to express
our appreciation for those who risk all to serve
our country but an opportunity to join our other
Post members in making a positive difference
on a scale larger than ordinarily attainable
through strictly individual efforts,” said Rick
West,2012 Post President.
Page 4
Every year a vote decides the special project
for the year. Then the members challenge
each other and the donations start pouring in.
In 2012, Post members far exceeded any donations
they have had in the past.
“I think it is great for the First Sergeants Group
to be able to partner with an organization
which shares the same goals that we do and
be able to reach out to our Airmen here at
Sheppard AFB,” Van Pelt said.
“As donations started coming in, it just started
to snowball and we ended up with much more
than we ever thought possible! Our members
really care about supporting our military folks
and wanted to give something back,” Mrs. Guillory
said.

POST NEWS (continued)
WICHITA MOUNTAINS POST SUPPORTS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Nationally, the Society of American Military Engineers
has a strong tradition of supporting
and encouraging students in STEM programs.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) designates programs/organizations
committed to education, ethics, and excellence
within those four fields of study.
The Wichita Mountains Post, in collaboration
with the Oklahoma Engineering Foundation
(OEF), continues that tradition with its members’
involvement with a variety of studentcentered
programs.
Post members volunteered as classroom mentors
and judges for the 2013 Future Cities
Competition. This year OEF celebrated 20
years of students imagining their future. The
program leads young people through a rewarding
learning experience where they tackle real
issues affecting real people. Along the way,
they discover engineering and become more
engaged citizens. America needs more engineers
and technical professionals to fuel our
innovation economy. Future Cities is a wonderful
way to introduce 6th, 7th, and 8th
graders to engineering and expose them to a
rewarding career possibility. Post-program
surveys show that a majority of students be-
Page 5
come more interested in math, science and
engineering after completing Future Cities.
WMP was represented at the 2013 State Engineering
Fair in Oklahoma City and a large
group of SAME volunteers were on hand as
proctors and graders for the SW Regional
MATHCOUNTS competition that was held at
Cameron University in Lawton.
Jonith Grundmann, SW Regional MATHCOUNTS coordinator,
also served as one of the volunteer proctors
at the Oklahoma State MATHCOUNTS competition.
Please send any suggestions for the web site and newsletter, including articles, job openings, contract awards,
publication notices, or other news you would like to share with the Post, to Michael Moe (moem@saic.com). Items
should be sent by the end of the month for posting on the website in the following month or by the end of the
quarter for inclusion in the newsletter for the following quarter.
