Oxburgh Hall Field Trip
Message from Head Teacher: October 2011
I feel very strongly that Archbishop Sancroft should not be an ‘exam factory’. Our
primary role is to prepare our students for the next stage in their life in order that they
can continue to succeed whether this be in education, the workplace or most
importantly as a valued member of their community. Taking part in extra-curricular
activities is a key part in this preparation and I am sure you will enjoy reading of some
of this half term’s activities. My thanks go to all staff who give their time so willingly.
Richard Cranmer
On 23 rd September, Year 8 students went on a school trip to Oxburgh Hall. We went there because we are
currently studying the Tudors in History.
The Bedingfield family built the hall in the 15 th century, the time of the Tudors. While we were there, we did some
dancing, looked at the type of food they had, learnt about the barber-surgeon and weapons. We also went to see
a Spanish prisoner in the chapel, and we learnt about the types of clothes they used to wear at that time.
Oxburgh Hall is a very pretty building set in fields, with a moat around it. Overall, it was a good day and everybody
learnt a lot about the Tudors’ lifestyle to help us with our History lessons.
Languages Day at Brockdish Primary School
At the end of September, the teachers at Brockdish Primary School organised a Languages Day for all of their
students. They kindly offered me the chance to be part of this day and teach the children some facts about
France. Here is what they learnt about…
In the morning, the students gathered in the Hall with their European passports and plane tickets to board the
Brockdish airlines flight to France and Germany. After a shaky take off, the air hostesses (Teachers) gave
students a croissant and some milk. The captain (Head Teacher) prepared the cabin for landing and after a few
turbulences, every one landed safe in France/Germany.
The students were then split in two groups and were given the chance to discover things about the culture,
famous people, geography and history of each country. They also tasted typical food from each country: Brie,
Camembert, baguette and croissants from France; and Salami, black bread and chocolate from Germany.
Students were also read a story in French and taught a song in German.
Students enjoyed learning all these facts about both countries and they were really enthusiastic, with lots of
questions!
In the afternoon, they produced a postcard explaining their day, and read them in front of their families during
afternoon assembly.
Overall, everyone had fun and an excellent day!!
FREE SCHOOL MEALS
Some Parents/Carers may be entitled to claim Free School Meals for their children, and we encourage those
who may be entitled but are not currently claiming, to apply. Free School Meals not only benefits the student,
but the school receives extra funding to support the students in other areas. Parents do not have to pay for
school lunches if they receive any of the following:
Income Support
income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
income-related Employment and Support Allowance
support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
the Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as
assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
Working Tax Credit 'run-on' - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop
qualifying for Working Tax Credit
Application forms are available from the school office.
Under 14 Hockey
The Under 14 Hockey Squad remains undefeated in all of their league matches. The squad travelled to
Attleborough and won 4-0, and to Old Buckenham and won 6-0. The team also progressed through to the
Norfolk Schools Hockey finals round to be held at Dereham Hockey Club on Thursday 13th October.
Under 16 Hockey
The Under 16 Hockey Squad also remains undefeated. They have beaten Attleborough 7-0, and Old
Buckenham 13-0. They have also progressed through to the Norfolk Schools Hockey finals round to be held at
Dereham Hockey club on Thursday 3rd November.
Under 14 Netball
The Under 14 Netball Squad has become the most successful Netball squad that Archbishop Sancroft High
School has seen in a number of years. The girls travelled to Attleborough to play in the South Norfolk area
tournament on Tuesday 4th October. They were unlucky to get off to a slow start, narrowly losing to
Wymondham High 4-2. From this point the girls convincingly beat Dereham Northgate, Thetford Grammar and
Old Buckenham in their group matches. ASHS emerged victorious in Group A, meaning that a semi final
match against hosts Attleborough had to be played. The girls fought hard, and played well, only just losing by
3 goals, 9-6. The girls then had to play off for a 3rd place finish. This game saw a hotly contested rematch
against Wymondham High school, and this time revenge was sweet as the girls won 9-5.
In the league the girls have beaten Old Buckenham 14-2, Long Stratton 16-0 and just lost to Wymondham High
8-7.
Well done to these girls for working so hard.
Under 16 Netball
The girls will play in their South Norfolk area Netball tournament at Attleborough on Tuesday 11th of October.
In a developmental year the girls are battling hard in the league, against girls that are all at least one year older
than themselves. Brave efforts against Wymondham High and Old Buckenham have recorded narrow defeats,
however the girls recently beat Long Stratton 8-7.
Keep going girls!
Under 12 South Norfolk Football Cup, away to
Wymondham College
ASHS again travelled to Wymondham College, this
time with the Year 7 Football Team. It was always
going to be a tough fixture against a very big school,
with many of their players at the Norwich City PDC.
ASHS started brightly, but it was obvious we were
going to be under pressure from the first whistle.
Wymondham’s big striker had a number of efforts on
goal, but Ryan Ellis managed to keep them out. The
defence worked hard, and cleared their lines a
number of times. However, the ball kept coming
back, forcing Charlie Hicks to play deeper and
deeper. At half time the score was 3-0 to
Wymondham, yet ASHS had worked very hard and
defended well. In the second half our team seemed
more organised and had a few chances on goal, but
our defence was still under pressure. At final whistle,
ASHS were out of the cup, but with their heads held
high. They had worked very hard and lost to a very
good team. Special mentions to Charlie Hicks for
excellent work rate; Ryan Ellis, man of match from
either side; and Ben Robinson and Tom Williams who
kept the defence working.
As a school, we are very proud of Josh’s achievements in Speedway racing. Josh started this sport two and a half
years ago and Lindsay Leveret, Josh’s mother, provided us with the following summary of his last six months:
“Over the last six months, Josh competed in the British Under 16 Championships in the 250cc class. There were six
race meetings held at Buxton, Newport, Plymouth, Sittingbourne, Stoke and Isle of White and there were 13 competitors
in his class. Josh finished in a respectable 6th place which he was very pleased with as he only moved from Grasstrack
to Speedway last year.
Throughout the 2011 summer season, Josh has also regularly competed in meetings at Kings Lynn and Scunthorpe, he
has taken part in second half rides (where youngsters are allowed to go out onto the track after the main meeting to
practice) at Kings Lynn, Mildenhall, Ipswich and Eastboune and he has attended training days at Mildenhall, Buxton and
Lakeside. At the training sessions Josh has recently started riding his 500cc motorbike which he hopes to compete on
during the 2013 season, unfortunately he has to be 15 before he is allowed to compete on it. Josh has been very
fortunate as John Louis of Ipswich and Michael Lee of Mildenhall, both of who are previous world champions, have
taken him under their wing and are coaching him. “
We wish Josh all the best for his future in this sport.
Battlefields 2011
On Friday 7 th October, Mrs Caldwell, Mrs Millea, Mr Ball and myself left school at 3.30am in the morning with 46
year 11 students to visit the battlefields in Ypres in Belgium.
We arrived safely at Dover and caught the 8.00am ferry to Calais. The crossing was not quite as smooth as we
would have liked and some of us (yes, me included) did not feel too well.
When we arrived in Calais the sun was shining. The coach journey to our first destination was about 45 minutes
so to make the journey more enjoyable Mrs Caldwell produced a song sheet of World War 1 songs – the whole
coach burst into song – including the drivers.
Our first stop was at The Trench of Death. There was a small museum and we had a fantastic panoramic view of
the plains which the Germans tried to cross. It was shocking to see how close the Germans did actually get. This
was the first of our two trenches we visited. We walked along in the trenches to get a feel of what it would have
been like. Some students read a poem called “Exposure” which was about what it would have been like in the
war in the trenches.
Next we visited Langemark. This is the only German cemetery in Belgium, There are over 44,000 soldiers buried
here. The average ages were between 16 and 17. There was such a lot to take in.
Our next stop was at Tyne Cot Cemetery. This is the largest British Cemetery in the world. The cemetery were
amazing, so beautifully looked after but also so sad to see so many graves of young men who had lost their lives
fighting for their country. There were about 11,000 graves and a wall containing over 33,000 names of soldiers
missing in action.
We visited Hill 62 at Sanctuary Wood. This area was heavily attacked during the first war. The trees and the
ground were badly damaged by bombs and this area has not really changed. Being in the trenches was
awesome. It was hard to believe that soldiers spent days or even weeks in the trenches – so exposed to all the
elements. It was a real time for reflection and imagining what it would have been like.
We called in briefly at Essex Farm. Here we went inside a bunker which the doctors would have used to treat the
injured. It had a very low ceiling and was very dark. Here Mrs Millea read the Poem “In Flanders Fields the
poppies blow”. This was written by a doctor who would have worked in those bunkers. Here is the grave of the
youngest soldier in the war – he was only 15 years of age.
On the way back to the ferry we stopped off in Ypres town. This was completely destroyed in the war and has all
been rebuilt. It was stunning. We visited a chocolate shop and stocked up on Belgium chocolates. Naughty but
nice.
It was a very enjoyable day. The students were good and a real pleasure to be out with.
I also learnt so much from this trip. Thank you to Mrs Caldwell for organising this.
