Message from Headteacher: December 2011
Thank you to all Parents and Carers for taking the time to complete the
Questionnaires. Your responses are with the company who analyses them and I will
include their feedback in next terms Newsletter. We are sorry to say farewell to three
members of staff this term: Dr Wilson, Mr Bates and Mr Gunn. We wish them all the
very best and thank them for all they have contributed to our community- in particular
Mr Gunn who retires after 19 years at Sancroft. We look forward to welcoming Mr
Hanrahan and Mr Ireson who join us in January in Science and Design and
Technology respectively. I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and trust that you
will all enjoy a peaceful break with your children. Richard Cranmer
Seven male members of staff grew moustaches throughout November to raise money for Male Health
Issues. On Thursday, 1 st December we had a ‘Shave-Off’ in the Hall, which for one day only was renamed
the ‘Moustachio Bar’.
Each of the seven moustaches, known as Moustachios, was allocated a Signora (from the staff) and
was shaved in public to the rhythm of music selected by the crowd through charity auction. At the same
time shoes were shined.
There was a considerable hold-up when Mr Moustachio's moustache appeared to require a hedgecutter,
but eventually education at the school could be resumed.
The students were superb in how they organised and ran the event, especially our compé res, Sian
Seaman and Daisy Bannon-Ryder; our suited auctioneers, Matthew Pretty and Matthew Littlewood; our
Spanish interpreter, Macey Wright; our Music Technicians, Harriet Duffield and Kira Rochard; and the
team of shoe-shiners, organised by Shannon Scofield and Bethany Noble. The audience was large,
supportive, responsive and generous.
The seven moustaches are available on ebay.
Imperial War Museum and Globe Theatre
Following my trip to the Battlefields, I continued with my interest in the First World War and joined Mrs
Caldwell, Mrs Millea and Mrs Miller plus 48 students on the Year 11 History trip to the Imperial War
Museum in London.
Another long, but very enjoyable day. There was so much to see and do at the museum. The
highlight for me was going into the simulated trenches. The noise and the smell stayed with you for
quite a long time. The museum was really interesting. I would like to go back.
After lunch in the grounds of the museum, we drove across London to the Globe Theatre. This was
amazing. The structure and dé cor was wonderful. We had a really good tour guide who made it really
interesting and exciting. The students were interested and asked lots of questions.
We finished the day in London with some time in Trafalgar and Leicester Square.
The day was really enjoyable and once again the students were a pleasure to take out.
Visit from Author, Tom Palmer
Tom Palmer author of the popular football series: Football Academy and Football Detective was
invited to Archbishop Sancroft School on Thursday 10 th November.
Hosted in the new Sancroft Centre Studio, Tom’s exciting interactive session captured the full
attention of Year 6 (from the feeder primary schools) and Year 7 and 8 students.
Tom started with a quiz challenge based on football articles from recent newspapers, moved on to
popular magazines and then to favourite authors and books. Students were keen to participate as
those who answered correctly were to challenge the mystery goalie ‘the cat’ in a penalty shoot-out.
The revelation that this was Archbishop’s languages teacher Mr Page raised the tension. Students
cheered for the strikers as they tried to put the ball in the back of the net, a beaming Ben Snowling (yr
7) won the trophy.
The event was organised by The Waveney Valley Children’s Book Group which holds monthly
meetings in the Harleston area. To find out more contact Sue Gillham, Archbishop Sancroft
Chemistry
This year is the international year of Chemistry, and the main theme is water. On Friday 4 th
November, we went to the Bayer Crop Science centre in Norwich for a Science competition, which
was based on water. During the day, we had a tour of the site, spent two hours doing experiments
and did a quiz about Chemistry.
There were several different experiments to complete within the two hours. One involved testing water
samples for calcium, to try and identify where in the country it came from. Another was adding the
right amount of salt into water to achieve the neutral buoyancy of a ball. The last experiment was to
make raisins float up and down using sparkling water. We also had a tour which showed us different
parts of the Bayer Crop Science centre, and competed in a quiz against the other schools.
At the end of the day, the winners were decided based on the results and graphs from our
experiments. They announced that we came first! We were given Bayer Crop Science bags with
prizes in. These included a £25 Waterstone’s voucher, goggles, a USB stick, notebooks and lots of
other prizes. We really enjoyed the day, especially when we found out we won. The team members
were: Sarah Griffee, Millie Burridge (year 11), Iain Symon (year 10) and Oliver Barnwell (year 9).
Sarah Griffee and Millie Burridge (Year 11 students).
I would just like to say how delighted I was with the result of the science investigation heat. All of the
team performed excellently and they were streaks ahead of any other competitors. I was and am so
proud of the whole team. A most well deserved win (enjoy your well earned goodies).
Student Christmas Prayers
These two prayers were written by two of our students and read at the Cluster Carol Service this
year. Dear Lord,
Dear God, we pray that over Christmas you look after
us and show us its true meaning. When it snows will
you show us joy and happiness? When we receive
presents will you show us that it’s more important to
give and not receive? When we eat our Christmas
lunch, will you show us love and the thanks that we
should be given.
Finally on New Year’s Day, will you show us that
over Christmas it’s a time to change and become
ever grateful for what more we have than others?
Remembering this Christmas to be grateful, is
something we all need to do.
I hope you will join with me in doing this, thank you.
Amen. Holly Sleightholme
Thank you for this time together.
Christmas is not only a time for giving and
receiving, it is also a time for joy and
worship. We remember the story of the wise
men and the journey to Bethlehem for the
birth of Jesus. Christmas is a time for
families and friends to get together and
spend quality time with each other.
Christmas isn’t all about eating chocolates
and getting the latest computer game.
We pray for all the staff in the School
cluster, Children and young people, Parents
and anyone that maybe suffering this
Christmas.
Amen. Luke Homer
Archbishop Sancroft High School Namibia Expedition 2011
Fourteen students aged 15/16, (plus two staff) from Archbishop Sancroft High School, gathered in Norwich bus
station, on the morning of 29 July, to start the first part of their journey to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.
We flew overnight from Heathrow, changed planes in Johannesburg and arrived in Windhoek at lunchtime. We
quickly transferred to a smart lodge, seeing many Springbok, Wildebeest and Ostrich on the way. This would be
our last night in a bed for some time and a last chance for other things now taken for granted, such as Wi Fi.
Our transport was a Mitsubishi lorry with a bus ‘shell’ welded on top. We named it ‘Tyrone’ and it served us well.
Next morning, after stocking up with food at a smart supermarket, we set off down the Kalahari Highway to our
primary school in Witvlei. We camped on earth in the school playground for five nights. We had running water,
toilets but no showers.
Nossob Primary School has 660 students aged from 4 – 14. It was built in 1974 and some of the buildings
looked ‘tired’. The students put in four full shifts painting the outside of two large buildings, the interiors of three
classrooms and replacing 42 panes of glass, including in dormitories. There is a certain shade of green paint
none of us want to see again! One of the great experiences here was the interaction between the two sets of
students. The final morning saw an outdoor assembly with speeches and performances from both parties.
While we were painting, a chap from the Namibian News Agency, Nampa, came, took pictures and interviewed
us. Two days later there was an article in the Namibian national press complete with a photo of us and Tyrone.
Next stop was the Waterburg plateau in the north and a luxurious campsite that had – showers! We then moved
on to Etosha where we saw a bewildering display of large African mammals including very close views of lion,
elephant, rhino etc, at the waterhole next to our campsite, which was floodlit at night.
We had been cooking for ourselves. Many students had hardly cooked before; now they are all experts at
catering for 18! At Etosha we took the opportunity to have an ‘all you can eat buffet’ – this included Springbok
steak – a definite hit.
We then visited four other ‘wild’ places as we made our way south, namely Spitzkoppe (for high granite
mountains and prehistoric cave art), Naukluft (for a trek where we had to traverse a cliff face holding onto chains
whilst trying to find the 1cm toeholds), Sesriem (with the highest sand dunes in the world, one of which we
climbed at sunset) and Sossusvlei where a local Damara chap took us through the dunes and pointed out the
most amazing things all from tracks and marks in the sand – this was the high point of the trip for quite a few of
us. In between these stops we overnighted in a hotel in the coastal town of Swakopmund, where we went on a
dolphin cruise and also saw thousands of Cape Fur Seals, including one old male who came onto our ship for a
free meal.
We duly set out from Windhoek airport on our 21 st day for the shortest
flight we’ve been on – 11 minutes! The landing gear stuck (fortunately)
down and we had to return to Windhoek. A spare plane was sent from
Johannesburg, but we’d missed our connection and had to spend the
night in a five star hotel with a six star breakfast and lunch so we had an
extra day’s holiday for free.
It was an amazing trip, with memories to last a life time. No-one fell out
with one another. Some students caught colds from the Namibian
schoolchildren – it is, after all, their ‘winter’ but no-one had a stomach
upset. The weather was very similar to the last week of September we
had here. This expedition wasn’t cheap. Some students paid for all of it
themselves either by working or fund-raising. I would especially like to
thank the staff and management of Budgen’s Store in Harleston for
allowing us into their store and bag pack to raise funds.
U16 Hockey
On Thursday 3rd November, the U16 girls travelled to Dereham to play in a Norfolk Championship.
ASHS were in a group with Greshams and Norwich High School for Girls. Firstly, we played Norwich
High School for Girls. ASHS really fought hard, but at half time were 1-0 down but as they went into
the 2nd half ASHS had really upped their game and not long after they'd started Kira Wooltorton
scored making it 1-1. Shortly after, Kira Wooltorton scored again to make the final score 2-1.
Next up were Greshams. ASHS had all the play and were unlucky not to score! An unfortunate short
corner was given which was converted but this made ASHS even more determined to score and they
soon replied through Holly Baker. In the last minute Greshams were given a short corner but with great
work from the defence this was cleared wide making the full time score 1-1. In a previous match
Greshams played Norwich High School for Girls and also beat them 2-1 which meant that we were
both on the same points! So it had to go to flicks! Greshams went first and scored but Kira Wooltorton
made it 1-1. Greshams missed with their next three after some excellent saves from GK Ellie
O'Sullivan. Holly Baker and Laura Davidson scored meaning ASHS had won and were put through to
the semi finals to play Wymondham College. ASHS were first to score with a great ball in from Holly
Baker, for Catherine Kilbourn to get a great deflection. But not long after Wymondham had scored
leaving it 1-1 at half time. In the 2nd half, a great run from Holly Baker from the half way line and a fine
finish enabled ASHS to win 2-1 which meant ASHS were through to the final.
ASHS lost the final to an excellent Norwich High School team 3-0 but had still qualified for the East
National Finals in Bedford.
This is a great achievement!
Team: Kira Wooltorton(C), Ellie O'Sullivan(GK), Holly Baker(VC), Catherine Kilbourn, Laura Davidson,
May Bowden, Chloe Pearce, Alysha Rankin, Elisha Loftus, Lucy Hadingham, Ellie Knox, Chantelle
Dwyer and Lauren Slowly.
Kira Wooltorton, year 10 student.
I would like to add my Congratulations to the girls for getting this far in a National Schools competition.
An achievement like this does not happen without a huge amount of hard work and I am very
impressed with how the girls conducted themselves throughout the whole process. A special mention
must go to Kira Wooltorton who's captaincy and leadership skills are to be admired.
Well done to the whole squad for such an amazing day and performance.
Before we travelled to Bedford for the
Finals, we used the new technology
the chance for a nutritious meal and
team bonding. An excellent night was
The ASHS Rugby World Cup
final!!
On the eve of the Rugby World Cup final, 2
teams from ASHS came together to play out
their own version of the Rugby World Cup
Final. We had our own 2 teams coached by
Leo and Toby Bond representing New
Zealand and France. Organised by Mr
Farrow after school on the Friday around 30
Year 11 boys stayed to participate, a huge
representation from the Year group.
It was a tense game between the sides, with
New Zealand taking an early lead. Both
teams were running the ball well, notably
players such as Will Jackson, Ollie Earl, Dec
Povey, Nathan Blomfield and Remarl Nelson
making a lot of ground. However, the tackling
was committed and neither team wanted to
allow the other side an upper hand. Aaron
Baines led the way in tackling and in a couple
of instances, made the 1st tackle, started the
ruck and then made the next tackle on the
player picking up the ball. Not to be out done,
Kieran Cooper made sure no one went past
him. Reece Smith, Calum Wells and Ernest
Buxton, all working hard in rucks and mauls to
secure the ball.
In an excellent game, full of sportsmanship,
New Zealand finally finished the game
victorious, even though a late flurry by France
looked like spoiling the party. Well done to all
those pupils involved and taking part. And
thank you to all the staff that supported the
event.
Toner and Inkjet Cartridge Recycling at ASHS
We would like to remind everyone we are still collecting used Toner and Inkjet cartridges.
To help ASHS make a significant dent in the 45.5 million cartridges that are sent to landfill in the UK
every year, (Source: UKCRA (UK Cartridge Remanufacture Assoc) 2006) we would like you to
recycle your printer cartridges. Simply drop off your empty printer cartridges in the special collection
bin at ASHS and ASHS will get 50p (or £1 dependant on the cartridge) for each one you drop off.
Not only will we be raising funds for our new school minibus but Recycle It is a great way to teach our
children about the importance of helping the environment, reducing waste and preserving the world’s
resources.
Please drop off any cartridges at the school office. Please make sure that any cartridges your
son/daughter brings to school are well wrapped so any residue of ink does not leak onto important
school work or into school bags.
The following cartridges are the only ones we can accept:
HP
Lexmark
Brother
Canon
Samsung
Please also note that the cartridges must be original inkjet and laser cartridges and should not be
broken or damaged.
We do hope that you will be able to support such a worthwhile programme and look forward to
receiving all your cartridges.
KS4 Curriculum Guide
ASHS - KS4 Curriculum Handbook 2011-12
A booklet was recently sent home to all Year 10 parents/carers giving them a guide to the structure of
the curriculum in Years 10 and 11 and details on what is taught in each subject during the course of
these two years.
The guide is intended to help parents to support their son/daughter's education as they progress
through their GCSE courses even more effectively. The idea is that parents, students and staff can
work together to help each student to make as much progress as possible.
Essential guide to success at GCSE
Year 11 parents/carers received a revision booklet giving them tips, ideas and techniques to help
them support their child with their revision and to again make good progress. The booklet will also be
posted home to Year 10 parents/carers later in the year. Again the idea is that parents, students and
staff can work together to help each other to make as much progress as possible.
If any parent would like a copy of the booklet or any more information do not hesitate to contact Mrs
Caldwell (Head of Learning KS4).
Both booklets will be available on our website @ www.ashs.org.uk under ‘Learning’ in the New Year
Home – School Partnership Parent Support Adviser
Once young people get to high school and begin to spend more time with their friends and less with
their family it’s easy for parents to feel like their child doesn’t need or want their company. Don’t be
fooled. Young people need their families’ support now as much as ever. Children whose parents take
an interest in their education have greater academic success regardless of the grades their parents
achieved at school. Adolescence can be hard for young people and for parents who want to help but
don’t know how.
Katie Utting and Heather King our Parent Support Advisers are available to parents with any worries
or concerns about how their child is doing at school. Their role is to work in partnership with parents
and school to ensure children get the most from their education and are ready to learn.
Our Parent Support Advisers help to find answers and give support by:
Discussing the changing needs of children as they move up the school
Finding agencies and services that can offer specialist support
Accompanying parents to meeting with school staff
Offering regular meetings at home or school that focus on finding solutions to specific issues
Helping prevent problem behaviour becoming more difficult
Supporting families where attendance and exclusion are a concern
If you are interested to find out more contact the school office on 01379 852561 or using the contact
School Counsellor
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Tracy Reeve who has joined the pastoral team at
ASHS.
The counselling service seeks to support students at ASHS by offering individual time and space to
discuss any aspect of life that is proving difficult.
The sessions are 30 minutes long, are confidential and aim to provide a safe environment in which
students feel secure and confident and thus able to explore any troublesome issues they are
experiencing whether they relate to home, personal or school life.
The counselling service is part of the school’s pastoral support team but it is fundamentally a
confidential service; the counsellor will not report the content of the sessions to parents, teachers or
anyone else unless there is a concern for the student’s welfare. In such cases the schools
safeguarding and child protection policies will be adhered to.
Celebrating Achievements at Sancroft
We have made a few changes to the way in which students are rewarded. These are the changes that
have been made:
- Credits have been replaced and are not in the student planner
- We will be using a new online reward system through IRIS. IRIS is where we log the bad things
students do at the moment. We will now use it to also log the good things.
- These are called Online Rewards.
- Parents, teachers and students can log-in to see how many rewards a student has been given.
- On-line rewards are harder to get than credits and can only be given for:
A) Piece/s of outstanding work.
B) Consistent good effort and good work (eg 10 good work stamps = one online reward). C) Continued
effort to improve an area of weakness.
D) Significant contribution to school life.
E) Significant consideration to others.
- There will be regular prize draws for those with lots of rewards and few IRIS points.
- Prizes will include things for a family or carers to enjoy – e.g. a family meal out or a movie ticket. This
is so that families or carers are proud of student achievement.
On line rewards are balanced against IRIS concern or incident points.
- Students who get in lots of trouble earn minus points which are deducted from their rewards. These
students will be issued with certificates for the things they do well but will not be entered for prizes or
treats.
Children in Need
As a form, 7Mt decided that they should get more involved to raise money for the charity Children In
Need. So, on Friday 18 th November, we organised a variety of activities to help contribute to this
national charity day!
We organised a sponsored swim, a lunchtime quiz and a cake stall. In addition, Ellie Clifford did a
sponsored silence for the whole day! 7Mt alone raised over £100 and this contributed to the £537 that
we raised as a school, through the non-uniform day donations. 7Mt had a lot of fun and would do it all
again for charity!
Year 9 Gressenhall Trip
Recently the whole of year 9 went on a field trip to the Gressenhall workhouse to learn about the
many uses of the hall itself. The day started with an introduction to the life that people lived in the
workhouse at that time. That introduction came in the form of 3 re-enactors: The workhouse master, a
‘jacket woman’ (an unmarried woman with children) and an injured man who couldn’t make a living
because of his injury. The actors assumed their role very well and provided an entertaining source of
education about the many things to dislike and indeed like.
Year 9 then split into 3 different groups, each going on a tour of the workhouse led by one of the reenactors.
Each re-enactor told a different story about the conditions you could find at the workhouse
and how you would be treated by the hierarchy. Each actor gave their opinion of what the workhouse
was like and how they lived and worked. The overall view from both the two inmates was that the
workhouse was a last resort, a place where only the poorest went. However the master stated the
complete opposite. He made it clear that anybody who entered the workhouse would have to work for
their upkeep, and anyone who refused to work did not deserve their hospitality at all and were ‘kicked
out’ with nothing but their original clothes.
After a break for lunch Year 9 took their last guided tour and returned to the main hall where we first
met the re-enactors. Here was staged a debate with one side of the room praising the workhouse and
the other emphasizing on all the bad attributes of the workhouse. There was some heated debate
between the students, but there was no clear winner in the end and the argument was left undecided!!
Clothes Show Live 2011
There were shops, wonderful exhibitors, models, celebs and dancers! There were over 40 top models
and dancers, bringing fashion to life by wearing high-street, designer, and couture and boutique
fashion collections. They were strutting their stuff down the runway to up-to-date music tracks wearing
the hottest hair and make up trends for the season. Clothes Show Live was a shopping heaven!
Housing an eclectic mix of styles and influences bringing us the best high street in fashion, unique
boutiques, vintage collections and designer labels. We met our favourite celebs from the world of
entertainment and fashion as they presented and performed on stages around the show. Clothes
Show Live was a great day out, enjoyed by many!
FOTASHS/ASHS MINIBUS APPEAL
FOTASHS and ASHS are currently raising funds for a new school
minibus and our target is to raise £25, 000 by May 2012. Sadly our
old minibus is reaching the end of its life and a new minibus must be
purchased in 2012. We have already begun raising funds but we
need your help. If any parent/carer would like to help with the
fundraising for this appeal and would be willing to give up their time
voluntarily to help with this project, we would really like to hear from
you. Or if you would like to organise an event with the proceeds
being donated towards the new school minibus appeal we would be
delighted to offer our support. For more details about our minibus
appeal please contact Yvonne Long (ylong@ashs.org.uk) or Kate
Nichols (knichols@ashs.org.uk).
OAP CHRISTMAS LUNCH
Students and staff once again entertained our local OAP’s on Thursday 9th December. A traditional
Christmas lunch was served to around 50 members of the local community and after lunch they were
entertained by the school choir, who sang numerous well known Christmas carols. Year 11 students
expertly waited on all of our OAP’S and it was fantastic to see the event so well attended, especially
as one gentleman was aged 100 and one lady 102!
