FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Our Value for this half term has been ‘Peace’
Our Value for next half term is ‘Consideration’
Each week I provide every Form Tutor with a page of
resources to use with their students during Tutorial time
at points in the week. The prayer for them to use this
week is one that encourages us to think of others at this
busy time:
‘In the hustle and bustle of Christmas
help me to take time to reflect on
the wonder of a new born baby.
In the stable he was weak
and helpless, homeless,
and he became a refugee.
To his stable came the poor
and the outcast, the stranger
and the traveller. Help me,
this Christmas, to make room
in my heart and time in my life
for the world’s lonely, poor
and dispossessed.
Amen’
THE RECORDER
The Archbishop Sancroft Newsletter
This term seems to have flown by and there is so much
to share with you. Our sporting successes are a
particular highlight of the half term and my thanks go to
Mr Farrow and Miss Cadge, Mr Page, Mr Pritchard, Mr
Batty and Mr Gould who give up their time to coach the
teams. Congratulations too to Declan Povey who has
been selected to play for the County U14 team. I am
very pleased to inform you that from January we have an
Athletics Club starting at the school, led by one of the
Coaches from Diss Athletics Club. Musically we have
had many occasions at which to hear our talented
students perform including the excellent Christmas
concert this week and I am delighted to hear that the
whole of Year 7 will be singing carols (in French) at our
final assembly next week -thanks to Ms Picnic!
There are a number of further site improvements ready
to take place. Immediately after the holiday work will
start on the refurbishment of the foyer. This will improve
this important area of the school and provide a more
welcoming environment to visitors and has been funded
by the Norwich Diocese. We were also successful in
applying for £60000 to refurbish the Dining Hall and
students have already been working with the architects
to design various aspects. This improvement will make a
huge difference to the environment at break and lunch
time. Our architects have been working on our Site
Development Plan and their proposals are on display in
the foyer. Please do pop in and have a look. This is a
consultation exercise and the views of all stakeholders
are very welcome. They include the new Food
Technology suite, Sports Hall, new parking area,
environmental area with outdoor amphitheatre and
Creative and Media Centre. Whilst we have yet to
secure funding for all of these, it is important that we are
ready for any bidding opportunities that come our way!
As part of our extended services we are starting a
Breakfast Club. This will be available daily from 8-
8.30am. In addition the Library will be open for students
after school on a Wednesday until 4.15pm. This will
provide a place for homework with Internet access
should students want to use it.
Our communications continue to be upgraded following
the publication of the new prospectus. Our new website
is almost completed and ready for launch early next term
and a new format of newsletter is on its way- both in
paper and electronic formats.
The other day I covered Mr Farrows Year 11 PE lesson
as he took the Yr 10 GCSE PE students to an Army
Assault course. He explained before he left that James
Baker, a Year 11 student, would be leading the lesson
as part of his Sports Leader award. I was amazed by the
way in which James led the learning with carefully
planned sequences of activities, encouraged all students
to do their best and earned the their respect. These sorts
of things go on very frequently at Sancroft and are what
makes our community so special.
I will ask all students in the final assembly next week to
help out at home this Christmas and to remember that it
is not just them who are on holiday- I hope this comes to
fruition!
My very best wishes to you all for a very Happy
Christmas and Peaceful New Year.
Mr Cranmer
Year 11 Practice Interviews
2009 marks the twentieth year that the school, together
with help from the local community, has run four days of
practice interviews for our students.
Yet again there was an excellent response from our
Year 11 to this year’s interviews. Seventy eight - Year
11 students of all abilities received an individual half-
hour practise interview with one of the 25 volunteer
interviewers from a range of career areas that visited our
school between
Wednesday 2 nd December-Monday 7 th December.
Students dressed in appropriate smart attire for their
interview and were a real credit to the school.
Jonathan Bond from Harleston Rotary organised a team
of 18 interviewers to come into school and they provided
a wide variety of vocational expertise including: teaching,
nursing, care-work, engineering, banking, accountancy,
insurance, business and administration, marketing,
catering, carpentry, animal care, garage/motor vehicle
work and sales. In addition to this we also involved
Trevor Smith from the University of East Anglia, Andy
Drummee from the Navy, John Richmond from the
Army, Tim Leggett, Director Blackburns Harleston and
Ann Quare Team Manager Emergency Social Services.
Both Tim and Ann are also existing voluntary business
mentors to the school.
We were particularly grateful to all our interviewers for
giving their time freely to provide expertise and advice to
our students.
Angela Walker
Student comments from their interview:
The interviewer was very nice and let me get used to the
situation before he started asking me anything. I didn’t
feel pressured and he allowed me to answer freely. I
think the interview was very good and boosted my
confidence and helped my communication. It showed
me that a real interview can be hard, but if prepared for,
the interview can become more of a conversation.
Overall the interview was great.
Sam Collins
I really enjoyed coming into school in interview clothes
and I think it did boost my confidence. I felt really
welcomed by the two people and they made me relax
and put me at ease. They gave me great advice on
future interviews and how to improve and I’m sure I will
find it easier when I go to college interviews. I have
benefited a lot from the interview and think they are a
brilliant idea.
Naomi Ash-Lameer
I was quite nervous before the interview, but once it
started I became relaxed and it was easy to talk to the
interviewers. As the end of the interview I was given
positive feedback, they told me my strong points and
how I handled the situation. I thought the experience
was very useful because it made me feel more confident
with going to a real interview situation.
Devon Green
By having the interview, it helped me realise not to get
worried about making my future choices and that I don’t
need to commit to anything just yet. They spoke about
what they look for in an employee and what qualities
they want.
Dressing a member of the audience in combat gear
complete with respirator and weapons was a sure way of
getting our attention. The anecdotes and explanations
that accompanied this demonstration highlighted the
dangers of SAS missions. However, there were many
lighter tales that appealed to the teenage audience. In
particular the jungle worm which remained in the
soldier’s body for many months revealing itself first
through the eye socket and later popping its head
through his chest! Or why Princess Diana suddenly
sported a new, shorter hairstyle courtesy of a SAS
practise mission.
Archbishop Sancroft and Diss Cluster Year 3 & 4
Sportshall Athletics Festival
A variety of athletic activities were offered to over 60
Year 3 + 4’s at Long Stratton leisure centre. Pupils were
given the opportunity to practice the speed bounce,
vertical jump, target throw, standing long jump, chest
throw, javelin, hi stepper and balance beam. It really
tested and improved their agility, balance and
coordination. The event finished with some relays which
the pupils clearly enjoyed (lots of jumping up and down
and screaming). For the majority of pupils these
activities were new to them and they had a fantastic
afternoon, lots of smiley faces and a real sense of
achievement.
Athletic coaches Paul Evans (Olympian champion in
Marathon) and Barry Palmer (Diss Athletic Club) were
on hand to help officiate and coach the pupils. Thanks
must go to Sport Leaders from Archbishop Sancroft High
School and Diss High School who helped to lead the
various activities and did a marvellous job.
The event was won by Alburgh with Denton from the
Archbishop Sancoft cluster, finishing second was
Burston and third Garboldisham. All pupils were given a
certificate of participation.
ASHS Year 9 & 19 Rugby Team vs Diss Year 10
The Sancroft team stepped confidently out onto the flood
lit Diss Rugby Ground brimming with eagerness to
maintain their 100% winning record. Diss kicked off
deep into the ASHS half and immediately put the team
under a lot of pressure, only for Harleston to retrieve the
ball from the following ruck. The ball was kicked long
and – knock on Diss! Harleston’s forwards moved in
tighter for the scrum and destroyed Diss. Diss’ players
were now lying in a heap on the floor, but the ball wasn’t
coming out for scrum half Kieran Cooper to fetch. It was
a repeated scrum with Diss input. Harleston were
expecting the ball to come straight to them, but were
immediately on the back foot when Diss, forced their
way through for a converted try on 10 minutes. Kieran
Baines immediately ordered his team to remain calm
and make the key tackles.
Tom Campbell kicked high from the drop-kick restart and
Harleston’s team bounded forward to gain the ball.
Kieran Cooper passed straight and true from the ruck,
after some excellent rucking-over from Dom Knights and
Leo and Toby Bond, to Rory Symon who make a darting
run, skipping past 4 Diss players to be tackled
centimetres from the try line. Symon quickly offloaded to
Tom Campbell, who burst through to score a try. Kieran
Baines stepped up to take a mammoth conversion, 30
metres, but narrowly missed – 5-7 to Diss.
From that moment on, it was all Harleston, Josh Eke
scored two terrific tries in quick succession from some
excellent team play, making the Diss back row look like
5 year olds! Tom Campbell took one of the conversions,
but it was scuffed underneath the cross bar – 15-7.
From the restart, Kieran Baines caught the ball
spectacularly and sprinted powerfully down the entire
length of the pitch, passing 1,2,3,4,5,6 players on the
way! He placed the ball down, under the uprights, whilst
doing a flip!!. As he casually paced back to an ‘in awe’
ASHS team, he begged them not to get cocky! Baines
converted his own try – 22-7. Diss responded well,
ploughing through the Harleston back row, only to be
tackled by Jordan Tonkes on the line, who also saved a
try by holding the ball up. From the 5 yard scrum, Diss
gathered pace and managed to squeeze in a well fought
try which was converted – 22-14.
After witnessing what Kieran Baines has previously
achieved, the Harleston back row passed the ball with
ease towards him and he penetrated the Diss team to
score another try - 27-14. With mere seconds to go,
Harleston added insult to injury when Rory Symon
received the ball from a line out, courtesy of some
excellent jumping from Ramiz Razzaq and Darrell
Theobald and perfect throwing from Dom Knights. He
passed two Diss forwards before shifting the ball to Tom
Campbell, who was off like a flash. Campbell scored but
missed the conversion. The match ended 32-14!
Year 9 Rugby vs Diss
The game started off well with the help of Leo and Toby
Bond storming forward with the help of the pack. The
first try came from Toby Bond after teamwork with his
brother and blasted through their defence.
Working together to give everyone the best chance in life

We came under threat from one of their best players, but
thanks to Nathan Blomfield’s excellent tackles, he didn’t
break through. Tackles were flying in, but when it was
brough out of a ruck, Kieran passed across to pitch to
Liam Radford and after a fast run down the line, scored
a try. The next try came from Kieran Cooper after
handling off tackles, he broke through and was
unchallenged to the line. The last try before half time
came from Nathan Blomfield and was well deserved as
he played well all through the first half. In the second
half, Leo and Toby taken off and we started off well, but
they scored after some missed tackles. Then after our
best efforts and great leadership by Kieran Baines, we
managed to hold them off from scoring again. Aaron
Baines was always there when they attacked and was
unlucky as he nearly stopped their second try. Then
after pushing them backwards, we were in control of the
game. The next try was well deserved as the whole
team worked together as we pushed forward and an
excellent ball carrying by Jack Purton to get it within a
metre away and Jordan King finishing it off in the corner
by just a few centimetres. After that, we were cruising
and were unlucky to have a try scored against us.
Overall, the team played well with runs by our wingers,
Jacob Irving and Liam Radford and 2 conversions by
Keiran Cooper. The final score was 29-10 and Man of
the Match was Kieran Cooper.
