Working together to give everyone the best chance in life
21 December 2012
Year 9 visit the Workhouse:
As part of their work in History all of Year 9 visited Gressenhall
Rural Life Museum on the 27th November. During the day,
students were involved in a series of activities related to life in
a Workhouse in Victorian Norfolk. Using the Workhouse asa
dramatic backdrop Year 9 investigated Victorian morals and
attitudes towards poverty during the 19th Century. They
interacted with 3 actors playing characters from the Workhouse,
the Workhouse Master, a male inmate and an unmarried mother
or jacket woman. At the end of the day students participated in
a lively and well argued debate on whether life in the
Workhouse really was that bad. Mrs Caldwell
U16 Hockey
On Wednesday the 21 st of November, the U16 Girls Hockey Team travelled down to Bedford to
prepare for the U16 East Regional Finals. After a good night sleep, all the girls woke up ready to
try their very best and achieve the best of their ability at the Hockey Tournament. With a good
warm up, all the girls felt ready for the first game of the day against Newport Grammer. ASHS
started off slow but soon got into the game, with Kara and Catherine Kilbourn both creating
chances to score but were unfortunate not to. Lots of hard work and good defending from May
Bowden and Laura Davidson kept Newport from scoring. Good saves from goal keeper Ellie
O’Sullivan and again great defending from Nicole Eaves and Chloe Pearce kept Newport yet
again from scoring. With short corners being created, ASHS were really unlucky not to score.
Newport caught ASHS on the break and slotted the ball in the net. Full time: 1-0.
Next up was Bedford, who had previously beaten Stamford 2-0. ASHS knew they had to win this
game. With relentless work from Emily McCluskey, Kira Wooltorton and Sophie Long in midfield,
ASHS looked like they were going to win this game comfortably. Half way through the first half,
Kira Wooltorton scored putting ASHS in front. Kira Wooltorton scored again in the 2 nd half but it
was controversially disallowed. With 2 minutes to go, ASHS had thought they had won but in the
last minute Bedford managed to score, meaning ASHS had drawn 1-1.
The last of the pool games, was against Stamford and if ASHS wanted to progress they needed
to win the game by at least 3-0. With massive effort from all the team, Kira Wooltorton scored
meaning ASHS led 1-0. With great passing from Elisha Loftus and Emma Taylor and continuous
good skill from Lauren Slowley gave Kara Kilbourn the chance to score as she slotted the ball
neatly into the back of the net. Shortly after,
Catherine Kilbourn got a goal as she sweeped
the ball precisely in the corner. Holly Sleightholme,
Ellie Knox and Chloe Pearce held the
ball up at the back and gave Kara Kilbourn
another chance to score; which she did, with
a great strike from the top of the D. Another
strike from Kira Wooltorton made the final
score 5-0.
ASHS though they had done enough to
progress to the semis, but unfortunately they
were just 1 point out from qualifying meaning
they would have to play off for 5 th /6 th place.
With a great team effort and a great debut
performance in goal from Megan Noble left ASHS in a very well earned 5 th place.
Thank you to everybody who came to Bedford and for their great support throughout the day. Also
a big thank you to Miss Cadge and Mr Connelly because without them the day wouldn’t have
happened.
Team: Kira Wooltorton (C), Ellie O’Sullivan (GK), Megan Noble (GK), May Bowden (VC), Laura
Davidson, Catherine Kilbourn, Kara Kilbourn, Emily McCluskey, Sophie Long, Ellie Knox, Nicole
Eaves, Emma Taylor, Chloe Pearce, Lauren Slowley, Elisha Loftus, Holly Sleigtholme.
Year 11 in London
Year 11 students experienced a very cultured day in London on the 14th November when the
History, English and Art Departments joined forces to plan a cross - curricular fieldtrip. In the
morning students visited the Globe where they had a tour of the theatre and visited the
Shakespeare Exhibition. This was followed by a fascinating and thought provoking hour in the
Tate Modern Art Gallery. In the afternoon Year 11 made their way across London to Whitehall
to spend time in the Cabinet War Rooms. A fascinating insight into what life was like in
Churchill's bunker during the 2nd World War. There was even time at the end of the day for a
stroll up Whitehall, to visit David Cameron at Downing Sreet, Lord Nelson at Trafalgar Square
and the bright lights of Leicester Square. Mrs Caldwell

Congratulations
A big congratulations to the musicians of the
have performed at Denton church, Harleston
Christmas lights, Leavers evening,
celebration assemblies, the carol service, the
visit of the OAPs and the Christmas concert.
All in the space of a couple of weeks. The
have spent a huge amount of time rehearsing
and they have given up a lot of their own time
as well – well done and thank you!
School Band’s Performance at Denton Church
Christmas Concert
The School’s annual Christmas concert is next
Wednesday 19 th December at 7:00pm.
Tickets are available from the school office
priced £5, this includes a mince pie and a
glass of mulled wine. Please note, any
students must be accompanied by a
responsible adult and be respectful of
performers at all times.
On the evening of Saturday 24th November The school band performed at Denton
Church for a fund raising concert organised by Mr B Winter. The band members were
Georgia Golby, Jack Seaman, Ethan Wiles, Kittie Henderson, Alex Whitham, Bonnie
Theobald and Kyle Dan. They performed a selection of pieces from films including
Titanic, Shrek, Toy Story and 2001 A Space Odyssey.
The performance was a huge success and members of the audience made some very
positive comments afterwards, some thought it was the best school band they’d ever
heard!
Ruth Melton and Katie Dade came and sang a selection of pop songs that also went
down very well. There were a number of other acts on the bill, mostly local bands and
musicians including world famous writer Louis De Bernieres. Our students were fantastic
ambassadors for the school, they should be very proud of their hard work in rehearsal
and their confident, accomplished performance.
Year 11 Mock Interviews
Year 11 all looked very smart when they took part in our mock interview programme, which took
place on the 5 th , 6th, 7th and 10 th of December. Students were asked to prepare for their mock
interview by completing an application form and a CV. Students were interviewed for 20 minutes
and at the end of each interview our interviewers were able to spend 5 minutes giving students
feedback on their interview.
Students were graded not only on their CV and application form but also on their entry into the
room, handshake, appearance, preparation, confidence, communication skills and their personal
interests and skills.
Interviewers included The Army, The RAF, The University of East Anglia, Harleston Rotary Club
and employees from local Harleston businesses. Well done year 11 for all the positive feedback
you received.
OAP Christmas Lunch
We were thrilled to welcome 65 OAP’S to our Christmas lunch on December 12th. Our
pensioners were served a traditional Christmas Turkey Dinner and they were entertained
after lunch by the school choir and band. Our Christmas dinner was cooked by our very own
school kitchen and they were supported this year by Norse. We were delighted to recognise
familiar faces including Lillian Burnham who is now celebrating her 103 rd year! Christmas
lunch was served by year 11 helpers who also joined in the singing with the choir after lunch
and with the dancing. We look forward to welcoming everyone back again next Christmas.
Christmas Lights
On the eve of Friday December the 7th, Archbishop Sancroft performed at the
annual Christmas Lights switch on in the town centre of Harleston. This was the first
year ASHS have got involved with the event so we were all very excited to perform.
Following a slight technical glitch the Glee club performed Maroon Fives Payphone
and Stooshe Black Heart. All the girls were brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed their
time in the spotlight . The dance club were next up to perform and after many
lunchtime rehearsals their routine to Keri Hilson's - I like, was executed with
confidence and artistic flare. Last to perform were the school band who entertained
the crowds with their fantastic renditions of I'm a Believer, Hard Days Night and
When She Loved Me from Toy Story. All pupils put in a tremendous amount of work
and really did ASHS proud.
Class of 2012 Leavers Eve.
Mrs Caldwell and all teachers were delighted to welcome back so many students
and parents from the Class of 2012 to the annual Presentation Evening last
week. It was particularly nice to see two students, Katy Rudge and Anna Martin
who had travelled all the way from Cornwall and Devon to join us for the evening.
The more formal part of the night was the presentation of subject awards to over
30 students. The HOL/HOP awards for the class of 2012 went to Sarah Griffee,
Jacib Foster and Gemma Littlewood. The Headteacher's awards went to Holly
Baker and Leanne Batram. A very special thanks must go to ex student and
guest speaker Charlotte Peck who was awarded the honour of lighting the
Olympic Torch in Norwich this summer. As Mr Cranmer said in the leaver's
programme, 'At ASHS we regard former students as lifelong friends of the school
and look forward to hearing news of their future achievements as time passess.
Our best wishes and good luck to all ex Sancroft student'
Cluster News
This half term Miss Kidd and Mrs Johnson have spent time with primary year 6 pupils continuing
the Stepping Up programme. Earlier in December we appointed 10 year 9 student ambassadors
to strengthen our links with the primaries, the many applications we received were all strong, the
interviews were tough and the final decisions even tougher but we agreed on 10 outstanding
students to represent Ashs:
Shania Scott and Milly Robson at Alburgh
Kittie Henderson and Freya Skellern at Brockdish
Maddie Brown and Jack Allison at Pulham
Bria Clarke, Sam Davidson, Emma Moss and James Kingshott at Harleston
Their pin badges have just arrived - these show our cluster logo and will be worn on their Ashs
sweatshirts. We will be introducing the students to their primary school in the new year.
On Thursday 13th December we held a carol concert at St Johns for pupils across the cluster in
years 5, 6 and 7. The church was full and each school performed a song, did a reading and read
a prayer. The service was enjoyed by all and the atmosphere was lovely.
Heather and Gemma - our Parent Support Advisors and Mrs Johnson have been delivering
Christmas cookery family workshops in the primary schools during December, a total of 5
workshops, 85 Christmas cakes, 85 marshmallow snowmen and 255 iced biscuits! It was lovely
to see several Ashs students coming to the primary schools to join in with younger siblings.
On Wednesday 12th December we hosted the annual community lunch, our fabulous catering
team prepared lunch for 65 guests and our year 11 helpers. We invited residents of Terence
Airey Court, Malthouse Court, Mendham Close, Harleston Over 60's group, Harleston Carers
and Rotary. After lunch the school band and choir entertained our guests. The year 11 helpers
did an amazing job and were complimented by many of the ladies and gentlemen who attended.
We have received letters of thanks and we know how much this event means to many of the
older members of our community. One elderly gentlemen told us, as he boarded the bus to go
home, that he had only recently moved to Harleston and didn't know many people so he spends
most of his days sat in his chair, he was so grateful for the opportunity to come out and meet
people, enjoy a chat and meal in the company of others and be able to get to us safely using the
Borderhopper service - getting him out of his chair for a few hours. Same time next year Sir? A
truly lovely event that leaves us all smiling and feeling festive.
