Working together to give everyone the best chance in life
30 March 2012
A visit to St John’s College, Cambridge
On March 6 th , a group of Year 11 students went to St John’s College
which is a part of Cambridge University. We were given a
presentation on what the college is and how it works, a tour of the
campus and a talk on applying to the university. We were also
shown around the library, had the opportunity to talk to students and
were given a free lunch!
When we arrived, a Cambridge graduate spoke to us about how the
college works with the university. We learnt that there are different
colleges linked with Cambridge University and that college is the
living accommodation for the students. Some students spoke to us
about university life and how it was different to a high school, sixth
form or college.
Afterwards, we were given a tour of the college campus. We got to
see the old buildings that make up the campus, which we thought
made it look a bit like Hogwarts! Also we saw the accommodation
block, the dining halls and got shown St John’s Library which is
open 24 hours a day so that you can study whenever you need to.
Finally we listened to a talk on how you apply to university and what
different requirements are needed to apply for Cambridge University.
We learnt they take into account your grades, interview you and
sometimes ask to see a selection of your work. They also showed
us what an average day at the university would be like.
Overall it was an interesting day out and showed us all what it would
be like to be a university student. It was nice to get an idea of what
we are aiming for after our GCSE’s.
HAPPY EASTER!
PLEASE NOTE: WE RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER THE EASTER BREAK ON
Message from the Head Teacher:
As you will read in this edition we have had another very busy term, including two inspections, and many
events to celebrate the diverse opportunities that we offer students at Sancroft.
The Prayer Space and Mission Week have to be among the highlights of my time as Headteacher and
the impact on our students and those from our feeder Primaries has been staggering. May I please remind
you that every week I write a short piece on our website www.ashs.org.uk reviewing the events of the
previous week and looking forward to the next.
I hope that everyone gets the chance to rest and refresh during the holiday and would like to with everyone
a very Happy Easter.
Mission Week
20th-25th February was 'Mission Week', where
we had a variety of activities going on – based on
the overall theme for the half-term; ‘Hope’ and
the week’s theme being 'Jesus, the Hope of the
World'. We looked at Isaiah 58 verses 6 and 7;
looking at how we break the chains of injustice,
free the oppressed, feed the hungry, clothe the
poor and give hope to the broken hearted.
During break and lunchtimes there was a Prayer
Space activity running that provided an
opportunity for all to reflect on what was being
seen, heard and experienced.
We had guest speakers coming in for collective
worship to look at how we can give hope to
others, as Jesus did and still does! DC3, a local
church talked about ‘Foodbank’, a charity that
collects food for people in crisis, supported by all
the churches in the area and now us! Paul
Guyver; Operations Director from Christian Hope
International presented the work they do to
support overseas by sending education
equipment, medical supplies and also raising
money for malaria nets.
Everyone has been invited to contribute to
something during this week and the rest of Lent.
Money for Malaria nets, Equipment for Education
Packs and Food for Foodbank. The idea being,
we give or take up something for Lent
and not just give something up
temporarily.
Anglican School Inspection
We have received a very detailed analysis from the
company that set up the Parent Questionnaires
earlier this year. The key findings are as follows:
150 completed questionnaires were returned
(37% return rate).
75% of Parents gave a very good overall performance
score and of those whose children
were not in their first year, 36% said the school
had improved over the last year. Of the parents
of new students, 29% said that the school was
better than they had expected.
Parents are most happy with: School facilities,
availability of resources and caring teachers.
They are least happy with School communication
and Social health education.
The company also analysed views of Parents on
the following 4 categories: Achievement, Teaching,
Behaviour & Safety and Leadership and
Management. In all of these the overall judgement
was 'Good'.
The Governors are reviewing the analysis and will be
responding accordingly via the School Improvement
and Development Plan.
Mr Cranmer
After an Ofsted inspection, Church Schools have an additional
inspection that focuses on the effect that the Christian ethos of
the church school has on the children and young people who
attend it. The inspection last Wednesday, in our capacity as a
Church of England School, went very smoothly and we now
await the report. My thanks to all who were interviewed by the
Inspector including students, staff, Parents and Governors.
Chris Bradford, Monday 27 th February 2012
Eleven students from Years 7-10 travelled to Aylsham Lodge Hotel for an exciting demonstration of
martial arts moves executed with great skill whilst Chris read a passage from the first title in his Young
Samurai series.
We were shown the blade, hilt and beautiful craftsmanship of a real Samurai sword and then Chris
revealed the razor sharpness of the blade by slicing a piece of paper in two. One side of the paper was
being held by Daniel Day; quite a close encounter!
Ricky Mills and Ben Snowling played the part of Ninjas who tried to creep up on Chris. All student
volunteers received Young Samurai merchandise for their efforts.
The small venue gave an intimate atmosphere to the event and Chris was his usual personable self;
posing for endless photographs with the students and giving individual attention to each one.
A memorable reading experience for all.
FOTASH Quiz Night
On Friday 16 th March Friends of Archbishop Sancroft (FOTASH) held their annual quiz evening though
slighter later than usual. The normal quiz master Mr Batty presided over the evening, also supplying the
questions, which were a mix of different topics.
There were 16 tables altogether, with a great mixture of staff, parents, students, grandparents and
people from the local community.
There was a great atmosphere with everybody enjoying themselves and having a good time.
The winners were the Rotary Reps (our local Rotary Club who support the school on a regular basis),
closely followed by the ‘Tarun-tula Beavers’ and ‘From ASHS to ASHS’ (teaching staff from the school).
I would like to thank everybody who attended, also the Friends committee for giving up their time to run
the event, the kitchen staff for cooking and serving the delicious meal, and to Mr Batty who gave up his
time as quiz master and for compiling the quiz. I would like to personally thank the three Year 9 girls who
did the marking on the night - Emma Taylor, Ruth Melton and Sophie Long, they did a fantastic job.
This evening helped to raise funds towards the cost of a new mini-bus.
Science Week
Our Science Week titled ‘Our world in motion’ has been incredibly busy. We started off with Mrs Muir
and four of our G&T pupils going to Hartismere, where they were taking part in a Sci-fest with other local
secondary schools present. Then we had a trip to the Science Museum and Natural History Museum
which was attended by all of Year 8 students and numerous staff to explore many different
activities such as 3D imaging! Whilst Year 8 were having fun, we had Gerry Blake from the Institute of
Physics in school presenting various workshops and practicals for pupils to get involved in. Overall, we
had many science classes taking part in this excellent experience.
In school we also started our competition that is sponsored by John Innes Centre, which is to grow wheat
plants, staff from the John Innes will be coming in later in the year to continue with this.
Mrs Riley has also been busy with running a competition that was set by the Woodland Trust; it was to
create a story about ‘What would a tree see in its lifetime!’ The story that is being entered is by Poppy
Whymark, a year 7 student, and is called ‘My Family Tree’:
My Family Tree has my Grandma and Grandad, then my Uncle- with King of
England underneath. Then it’s my Mum and Dad, with a pretty wedding photo.
Then last of all, it’s me, the new Queen Victoria. 60 years on and my family has
grown. Names like leaves are added, the tree has grown. The family acorn - a
family oak.
On Saturday 10 th of March myself and 3 other students, Zach Cox, Morwenna Griffiths and Ollie
Barnwell, were taken by car to Hartismere by Ms Muir for Scifest 2012.
This was a science fair where different schools and scientific organisations showed some of their
experiments. As a group of four we set up a table of experiments including dissolving hair gel and
making sodium alginate worms. (Sodium alginate is used in indigestion remedies).
On the day there was a great turnout from the general public and lots came to see our stand.
On the table opposite us were some representatives from Africa Alive. They had a lot of animals you
could hold, from snakes to cockroaches.
This was a very fun day out and I would recommend others who enjoy science volunteering in the future.
Science and Natural History Museums Trip
On Tuesday, 13 th March 2012, we congregated at school in the dark at a quarter to seven in the morning,
and then took a coach trip to London, stopping once on the way at a service station for a short break.
When we reached London, we saw many landmarks – such as the Olympic Clock, Big Ben and the
Houses of Parliament, the Gherkin and the London Eye. When we got to the Science Museum, we split
into groups and looked around. Some of the things that we encountered included an area that told us
about energy use, one that speculated on science in the future, and one that told us about how our brain
works. Some people even had a 3-D photograph taken of their head which would be studied as part of
research by scientists at the Great Ormond Street Hospital so that they can learn more about the construction
of the human face.
After we had looked around the Science Museum for a while, we took a short walk to the Natural History
Museum. This is housed in a large, impressive Victorian building, so looked great from the outside – and
even better on the inside. As soon as we walked in, we were faced with an actual-sized, gigantic
Diplodocus dinosaur skeleton – named “Dippy” – and all through the museum there were other stuffed
animal specimens and figures, including a life-sized model of a blue whale suspended in mid-air!
We all took lots of photos, then went to a new area where we learnt about the Polar explorer, Robert
Scott’s last expedition, when he died due to the perishing, terrible conditions.
Pretty soon, it was time to go home. We were all tired as we returned to the coaches and set off back to
Harleston. We reached School at half past eight in the evening. It had been a great day and I, for one,
would love to go again.
Sports Leaders
ASHS took 14 students to the South Norfolk Leadership Academy day at UEA. Here the students spent
a day learning how to coach and lead in a variety of sports. Once they have completed the day, the
students were then able to assist at events running throughout South Norfolk in the future.
The day was an excellent experience for a range of children across 9 high schools. With over 140
students involved. The students learnt their coaching skills from experienced coaches from around the
UK, even current English international player such as Mr Utku, who led the Basketball sessions.
An excellent day was had by all the young leaders, even getting a free whistle for attending. This made
for a noisy journey home!
Mixed Hockey
ASHS took 10 students from Year 9 to the South Norfolk 7-a-side Mixed Hockey finals at The Hewett
School in Norwich. Here they played 5 other schools from around the area, including Wymondham
College. The team played incredibly well, winning every match against the other schools. In fact, ASHS
only conceded one goal the whole tournament. Credit goes to Ruth Melton, playing so well in goal.
Each player worked very hard throughout the tournament. Goal scorers included Kara Kilbourn, Lloyd
Potter and Brandon Pickess. An excellent day for ASHS, who go on to represent the area at the County
Finals in June.
Team: Kara Kilbourn, Lloyd Potter, Brandon Pickess, Harvey Clarke, Andy Haddingham, Ruth Melton,
Sophie Long, Holly Sleightholme (c), Emily McClusky, Nicole Eaves.
ASHS also provided 3 Young Leaders to help officiate and coach. They were excellent role models for
the young students. Well done to Catherine Kilbourn, Kira Wooltorton and Ellie O'Sullivan. Your help
and support throughout the day was invaluable.
Mr Farrow/Miss Cadge
Norfolk Rugby Sevens
ASHS are one of only about a dozen schools to enter the County Rugby 7s at most age groups this
year. Each team has played incredibly well and has competed against very strong teams from around
the county.
Year 8 and 9 teams started by playing teams from Wymondham College, Langley and Greshams.
Although they lost these games, they continued to work hard and showed excellent spirit. Both teams
finished the tournaments with wins against much bigger schools. Well done to Ben Evans, best player
for the Year 8 and to Lloyd, Tom, Jack and Brandon for the efforts in Year 9.
Year 10 had the most promise, with a few regular rugby players in the squad. They put up an excellent
fight in their first game against Greshams, losing narrowly, but showing they were here to play. ASHS
moved through the group stage into the Plate Competition. They played the semi-finals against Cliff
Park High School, winning comfortably. In the Final they faced an experienced Fakenham side. The
game was very close, though the ASHS players were looking tired. ASHS lost the game ultimately by 1
try, but they had played very well. Wymondham College won the Cup Final against Langley. ASHS
were runners up in the Plate to Fakenham. Well played Year10!
As many of you know the club has been through a bit of trouble recently this is just a note to say that we are still
Holidays in Term Time
Can I please remind Parents and Carers that holidays in term time will not be authorised unless
there are 'exceptional' circumstances and this is very rare. These do not include the situation
when flights overlap with the start and end of a school holiday period.
Mr Cranmer
Prayer Space
We had our first ever Prayer Space over the fortnight of Monday 19 th March – Thursday 29 th March 2012.
Prayer Spaces (or sacred places) in Schools enable children and young people to explore faith and
spirituality from a broadly Christian perspective in a safe, creative and interactive way. A range of
resources were available to students to give them an experience from a different dimension in a variety
of subject areas. This also supports all pastoral aspects of their school life.
There were 5 themed ‘zones’ within the Prayer Space which could be visited at break and lunchtimes, as
well as part of the Religious Studies lessons and after school. Our cluster primaries were invited to
access the space, which is brilliant to support the transition opportunities. Other visitors from churches
and schools also visited.
We had volunteers from the local churches and Integrate Youth for Christ to support the sessions and we
are very grateful for their time and energy!
This was well received and we had many positive comments throughout from everyone. The students
really engaged well and we are very proud of them. We hope to do this next year and at some point find
a more permanent location on the school premises.
