THE RECORDER
The Archbishop Sancroft Newsletter
FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Although the festive period now seems far
behind us I would like to wish you and your
families a Happy New Year. I do hope that
despite the economic climate affecting many in
our community that you were able to enjoy
some quality time with relatives and friends.
The term finished very well with the Carol
Service at St Johns Church. It was lovely to
share the occasion with the Primary School
and a real pleasure to see children of all ages
playing in the band and singing together. Mr
Most, our Head of Music and Mrs. Bentley from
the Primary worked very well together and my
thanks to them for a special evening.
On a slightly different musical note, the end of
term disco was equally enjoyable and the Year
11s looked fantastic in their Fancy Dress. No
doubt parents of these students had a lot of fun
helping them prepare for the event. The Staff
Band made a very special appearance, which,
although very popular, has not to my
knowledge led to many future bookings! The
atmosphere was one of real enjoyment and
celebration and the dismissal on the last day
very calm. I won’t forget the sight of a pixie,
fireman and ballerina walking down Wilderness
Lane.
You will read later on in this edition read the
names of those students nominated for
Headteachers Commendations. This has given
me a valuable insight to the good work going
on in each Department and I plan to run
another cycle in the Summer Term.
One of the strengths of the school is high
quality care and support. This is not down to
one or two individuals but a network of experts,
both voluntary and professional who work from
within and from outside the school. I have
asked two of these, our Parent Support
Advisor, Extended Schools Co-ordinator to
write a short piece about their roles. You can
also read about the excellent work of Jon
Davies, our Sports Partnership Development
Manager.
This week we have enjoyed a visit from a
group of French students from a High School in
Marseilles. They were made to feel very
welcome by staff and students alike and I very
much appreciate the time and effort that goes
into making this sort of opportunity a success.
My thanks to Mr Page and Mrs Harvey. There
will be more information from a ‘student eye’
perspective in the next edition.
Another success for the school that I would like
to recognise is the award presented to our
students from the Poultry Club of Great Britain
for the ‘Best Juvenile Exhibit’ at the National
Show. I am delighted that there are still a small
number of Poultry enthusiasts, who, with Mr
Beckett’s guidance plan to continue to show
their birds at events such as these.
You will know that last week we had an Ofsted
Inspection and I would like to thank you for the
large number of questionnaires returned to the
school. This was praised by the Inspectors and
helped them very much in making their
judgements about us.
I appreciate that I had asked you for similar
feedback in December- and promise that I had
no idea they would be with us so soon! I am
unable to share the outcomes of the visit at this
point in time but you will hear more in the next
Recorder (27 February) and in the letters
Working together to give everyone the best chance in life

coming home with students in the next couple
of weeks. I had asked the Chief Inspector for
an accurate assessment of where the school is
at this point and some clear areas for us to
work on. This I feel they have done well, so it
has been a very useful and timely opportunity
for us to clarify our priorities.
Mr. Cranmer
Emma Johnson – Extended Schools
Co-ordinator
An Extended School is a key way of delivering
the Every Child Matters outcomes; it works
with a range of local providers, agencies and
other schools to provide access to a 'core offer'
of integrated services:
1. Parenting and family support
2. A varied range of activities
including study support, sports
and music clubs
3. Swift and easy referral to
specialist services such as health
and social care
4. Community use of services,
including adult and family
learning and ICT
5. Wraparound childcare all year
round (in primary schools)
The Harleston Cluster of schools consists of
Archbishop Sancroft High School, Harleston
Primary School. Alburgh with Denton Primary
School. Pulham Primary School and Brockdish
Primary School. I work to co-ordinate a range
of extended schools services across all
schools in the Harleston Cluster. I meet every
half term with each Head Teacher to evaluate
and plan extended services for each school.
This term sees the start of a trampoline club at
Archbishop Sancroft which is one of the
projects I have been working on in conjunction
with Active Norfolk (Sport England) who have
provided funding for this and other sports
projects including Gymnastics and Archery in
our cluster.
Other examples of Extended Schools activities
within our cluster include a community Yoga
class running each Monday morning at Alburgh
with Denton Primary School and half termly
themed family days which are hosted by each
school in rotation, the next of which is a Crime
Scene Investigation Day at Pulham Primary on
Saturday 7 th February. I attend School Council
meetings at Archbishop Sancroft and welcome
ideas from students. I would welcome ideas
from parents and families and will shortly be
sending a short questionnaire home through
The Recorder which I would be very grateful if
you would complete for me.I can be contacted
Home – School Partnership Parent Support
Adviser
Once young people get to high school and
begin to spend more time with their friends and
less with their family it’s easy for parents to feel
like their child doesn’t need or want their
company. Don’t be fooled. Young people need
their families’ support now as much as ever.
Children whose parents take an interest in their
education have greater academic success
regardless of the grades their parents achieved
at school. Adolescence can be hard for young
people and for parents who want to help but
don’t know how. Katie Utting our Parent
Support Adviser is available to parents with
any worries or concerns about how their child
is doing at school. Her role is to work in
partnership with parents and school to ensure
children get the most from their education and
are ready to learn.
Our Parent Support Adviser helps to find
answers and gives support by:
• Discussing the changing needs of
children as they move up the school
• Finding agencies and services that can
offer specialist support
• Accompanying parents to meeting with
school staff
• Offering regular meetings at home or
school that focus on finding solutions to
specific issues
• Helping prevent problem behaviour
becoming more difficult
• Supporting families where attendance
and exclusion are a concern
Bulgaria Trip – Summer 2009
There is now one space available for this
trekking trip in the mountains of Bulgaria. If
anyone is interested, please see Mr. Roberts
as soon as possible.
Fantasy Writers
Fantasy writers Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell
will talk to Years 6,7,8 about ‘The Immortals’,
the final instalment in The Edge Chronicles on
Tuesday 3 rd February in the school hall.
As they enthral the audience with their tales,
Chris will also be drawing one of the
characters, making it a visual treat too.
Copies of their books can be bought in
advance from the school library or on the day
in the hall, to be signed by the authors.
Mrs. Gillham
Sancroft’s Debating club has gone from
strength to strength this term, with students
from both upper and lower school attending
regularly each week. There have been a series
of lively debates on topics ranging from ‘A
woman’s place is in the home’, ‘ignorance is
bliss’ The Presidential election, Scientists
sometimes play God and a balloon debate on
the best Christmas Song.
Debating Club meets every Friday Lunchtime
at 1.30 in room 9. New members are very
welcome to join. Mrs. Caldwell
BOXERCISE
A class of year 10 students have had the
exciting opportunity to participate in boxercise
classes. Boxercise is a relatively new method
of improving fitness, using many of the
principles of boxing, but without any actual
contact. We have been fortunate enough to
have accredited Boxercise coach Tom Reed
leading the sessions. Tom is a community
coach within the School Sports Partnership
and we look forward to working with Tom
throughout the rest of the school year.
It has been clear from the students’ feedback
that they have benefited from the fast paced
exercise, whilst also really enjoying it.
PARTNERSHIP GAMES
Last term a group of students from Archbishop
Sancroft High were chosen to represent South
Norfolk Partnership at the Partnership Games.
This event is the single biggest sporting event
in the School Sports Partnership calendar and
involves over 900 students from all over the
county. South Norfolk competed against seven
other partnerships, in 8 sports. Successes on
the day included finishing second in the
basketball and third in the rowing. All students
should be congratulated for their efforts on the
day.
Keeping your child safe on the Internet
Parents will shortly be receiving a CD called
‘KnowITAll’ which provides important advice
about how young people are using the Internet
and mobile phones and how you can help them
to stay safe. These will be distributed at
Parents Evenings which commence in
February.
Olé! Viva España!
Since last term, my new lunchtime Spanish
club has been very popular among students
and especially nearly all the school LSAs! In a
relaxed and friendly atmosphere, we all
practise the basics of Cervante’s language and
discover the Spanish culture.
Last term, we had a lovely Christmas party
around a Spanish tortilla and other tapas,
followed by a few salsa steps taught by Beatriz
Flores-Sanchez, a very helpful member of the
club from Cuba.
Should any student or staff wish to join us,
