Origin of name Suburb Additional information See Source Further
information
Named after
Vancouver, a
city located on
the west coast of
British Columbia
in Canada.
Wainoni One of a number of streets in
a subdivision between
Ottawa Road, Pages Road
and Cuffs Road given
Canadian place names.
Named because Canadian
engineers and workers lived
in the area while working for
Henry J. Kaiser Co of USA
and building the Lyttelton
road tunnel. Houses were
built for them by Fletcher
Construction. After the
tunnel was opened in 1964,
the Canadians went home
and their houses were sold to
locals.
Another suggestion is that
the streets were named
because they were near
Ottawa Road.
Named in 1959.
First appears in street
directories in 1962.
