Restrictions
Mixing of ALP360 and other fibre channel control types on the same attach
Loop is not allowed and restricted.
Quickloop connections are not supported.
It is the expected behavior of Fibre Channel tape units to report irrecoverable
I/Os if a LIP (Loop Initialization Process) occurs after data transfer has started
for either a read or write operation between the device and the host channel.
If data transfer has not started between the device and the host channel, the
I/O reporting the LIP as an outboard bus device reset will be retried.
Q F
For Fabric connected configurations, the relationship of one channel to up to
two units should be maintained and it is recommended that they be placed in a
zone. If more channels and units are attached to the same fabric they should
each be in their own zone, and the fabric bandpass needs to be designed to
handle the additional units and channels.
Dual SDLT600
Rackmount, FC, dual
ALP360-2FD
The ALP360 does not utilize a Hard Addressing scheme for connection to
FC_AL arbitrated loop. This device uses a Soft address scheme that starts the
process of obtaining a loop address (soft) at the low end of the AL_PA table of
AL_PA’s (i.e. starting at AL_PA =EF dec. 00). Based on this, the ALP360
must be the only target device on the FC_AL to the host initiator when direct
connect FC_AL mode is configured. And can only be configured using address
0 for the control in a direct attach configuration. When using this device in a
fabric configuration the WWID Port Name should be used in the configuration
file.
Section 3
SCSI Device Guidelines
Introduction
This section covers SCSI Tape Appliance and the tape devices subsystems that use the
wide SCSI and Ultra wide SCSI interfaces. The maximum data transfer rate for Ultra
SCSI interface is 40 MB per second.
The following are some SCSI configuration rules:
Dual Initiator SCSI
• The maximum end-to-end length of the Ultra or Wide SCSI Bus is 25 meters (80
ft)
• For connectivity, the maximum number of SCSI devices per bus is four (4).
• For best performance, the maximum number of SCSI devices per bus is two (2).
• Both ends of the SCSI bus must be terminated, with no mid-bus terminations.
• Each device on the bus must have a unique SCSI ID.
A SCSI Dual Initiator configuration has two different bus masters. Dual Initiator is
typically employed so that two different systems can access the same Tape drives
(though not at the same time).
6871 6364–003 3–1
SCSI Device Guidelines
Figure 3–1. Appliance Cabling – Dual Initiator Configuration with two Tape
Appliances
Terminators require consideration with dual initiator. Both ends of the SCSI bus are
terminated, so the second bus master must have the terminator removed. Port D on
the LVD-HVD Converter has no terminator and may be attached to the middle of the bus.
Tape Storage Subsystems Configuration Guidelines
The following tape drive subsystems are qualified on some of ClearPath systems
covered by this guide. See Section 2 for current qualification status.
There are two OEM vendors of SDLT320-type tape drives. DSI drives are stand-alone
(either rack mount or tabletop) drives, and StorageTek (STK) drives are installed in CLU
Libraries (CLU180, CLU201, and CLU700).
DSI Super Digital Linear Tape ALP320 Stand-Alone Tape Drives
DSI drives are delivered with V56 firmware installed to be compatible with DLT4000
Fibre Channel Device Guidelines
General
FC3-IOP Fibre Channel adapters enable ClearPath hosts to interface to Fibre Channel
protocol (FCP) peripherals and subsystems. FCP is defined as SCSI protocol over Fibre
Channel. Peripherals are connected to a host using a serial interface on an arbitrated loop
(FC_AL) or through a fabric.
The FC3–IOP provides one Ethernet port connection and two Fibre Channel
portconnections.
The Gigabit Ethernet port provides external networking and ODT support. The
portconnection can be either copper or optical at 1 Gb per second.
The two Fibre Channel ports provide the interface to external I/O devices. Each of
theFibre Channel ports provide an optical interface, with a transfer rate of either 1, 2, or 4
Gbper second.
Fibre Channel Device Guidelines
Operational Characteristics and Features
• Mixing of JBOD 4000, and other fibre channel control types on the same attach Loop
is not allowed and not supported.
• When concatenating JBOD4000 racks, configurations of up to six racks
concatenated in a direct connect configuration is supported, but in fabric
configurations no more than two racks concatenated and connected to a switch port
are supported.
• JBOD4000/RTS4001 racks are only supported when configured using the HID
address mode setting.
• JBOD4000/RTS4001 racks cannot auto sense the fibre channel interface speed. The
racks have a switch-able front panel setting for either 2 Gb or 4 Gb speed that sets
all ports in the rack to that speed.
• It is recommended to use a 4Gb Fibre channel HBA in the SBOD manager server in a
direct connect configuration where monitoring is required. Otherwise using 2Gb
Fibre Channel HBAs will require all the JBOD4000 racks connected to the HBA to be
set to 2Gb fibre channel speeds.
• The SBOD Manager Server must be rebooted any time physical changes are made
to the SBOD environment to get the SBOD Manager to recognize the changes.
• SBOD manager may lose socket connection after about 72 hours of continuous
operation. A restart of the manager is required for continuation of monitoring.
• Using SBOD manager version 5010, the Fibre Channel speed label and value is
incorrectly shown as 6GB. This will be corrected to show 4Gb in a future release.
CTS9840 Fibre Channel Tape Configuration
The CTS9840 requires the use of control type FCSCSIMT in the PCD of the partition
profile. The maximum number of drives per channel is two due to channel bandwidth
limits. The mixing of CTS9840 and ESM7700 on the same loop is not allowed.
The CTS9840 has two FC ports on the unit. Both ports can assess the drive but not at
the same time. Only one port can be used. Port A is used for even numbered addresses
and Port B is used for odd numbered addresses.
Configure CTS9840A for Fabric
To set the CTS9840A tape drive for Fabric, perform the following.
Notes:
• The tape drive must be a CTS9840A (STK part number 312102401) and must be at a
minimum firmware level of R1.30.110f to install on the fabric.
Fibre Channel Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Gen2 Tape Drive for CLU
Libraries
Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Technology offers enterprise system environments a tape
solution that addresses the performance, capacity, reliability and management issues
faced when choosing a tape solution. LTO Technology is ideal in the SAN environment
because it meets the special tape demands that SANs create.
Similar to digital linear tape drives (DLT), LTO drives write data tracks in a linear,
serpentine fashion. When the end of the tape is reached, the heads are repositioned
above or below their current location, and recording resumes in the opposite direction.
There are two Fibre Channel LTO drives supported on ClearPath enterprise servers: the
CLU180-22F for CLU180 libraries and the CLU700-22F for CLU700 libraries.
Tables 4-6 lists the software level qualified for use with the LTO drives.
DSI2000/4000 Restrictions
• Mixing of DSI2100, DSI2200, DSI4100, DSI4200 using the DSIF63-REV tape drive,
and other fibre channel control types on the same attach Loop is not allowed and
restricted.
• Quickloop connections are not supported.
• The DSI2100, DSI2200, DSI4100, DSI4200 using the DSIF63-REV tape drive does
not utilize a Hard Addressing scheme for connection to FC_AL arbitrated loop. This
device uses a Soft address scheme that starts the process of obtaining a loop
address (soft) at the high end of the AL_PA table of AL_PA’s starting at the first
available address. For example, if one initiator were used in this configuration the
starting loop address would be 124 or AL_PA=02, since the FCA1850-LC initiator
would occupy address 125 or AL_PA=01. Based on this addressing scheme, the
DSI2100, DSI2200, DSI4100, DSI4200 using the DSIF63-REV must be the only target
device on the FC_AL to the host initiator when direct connect FC_AL mode is
configured. If the Port WWID of the DSI2100, DSI2200, DSI4100, DSI4200 using
the DSIF63-REV can be determined though the use of a switch, then that value can
be used in the configuration file e.g.(.cef) instead of a loop address. When using this
device in a fabric configuration the WWID Port Name should always be used in the
configuration file.
• For Fabric connected configurations, the relationship of one channel to up to two
units should be maintained and it is recommended that they be placed in a zone. If
more channels and units are attached to the same fabric they should each be in their
own zone, and the fabric bandpass needs to be designed to handle the additional
used as a Hot Standby
Appendix A
Host Bus Adapter Cables
Signal cables connect the server to the peripherals.
Cables in this appendix include
• SCSI host bus port
• Fibre Channel
• Keyboard, monitor, and mouse
• LAN
The cables and cable adapters listed are for the most typical applications. Some
configurations might require additional adapters or terminators.
When ordering peripheral signal cables, refer to the documentation for the peripheral
device or subsystem. Some subsystems require two sets of cables. Some connections
require adapters or adapter cables
SCSI Host Bus Port
The host bus ports are connected to external storage devices. When ordering cables,
use the shortest cable length possible to connect components.
Fibre Channel
Refer to Section 3 for fibre channel interface characteristics and brocade switch options.
For longwave requirements consult Unisys Sales Support.
DB9-to-DB9 Cables
You can connect either the equalized or nonequalized copper interface cables (See Table
A–1). Dual-loop installations require two adapters and two cables per subsystem.
