Section 1 

General Description 

This Software Release Announcement describes Business Information Server for 

Microsoft Windows (BIS for Windows) level 11.1. 

Introduction 

The Unisys Business Information Server (BIS) for Windows software product is a 

combination of Business Information Server (formerly MAPPER) and Internet Commerce 

Enabler (ICE, formerly Cool ICE). These combined products provide an integrated 

application development and deployment solution for ES7000 servers and Microsoft 

Windows platforms. It provides an excellent interface platform to BIS for OS 2200 

executing on a ClearPath server. Business Information Server is a highly scalable, multinode, 

enterprise-level rapid-application development tool that allows businesses to 

create, organize, and manage their business logic and Web assets in an integrated 

environment. Business Information Server based applications can be built using the rich 

power functions of the native scripting language and industry standard JavaScript. 

If you are new to Business Information Server, refer to the Business Information Server 

User’s Guide for some quick steps to getting started with the product. It describes the 

basic concepts of Business Information Server and presents procedures to accomplish 

several common tasks.

Product Overview and Description 

Business Information Server is a consolidation of several business solution technologies 

into a single deliverable. It contains the powerful data aggregation and manipulation 

engine of Business Information Server, the Internet connectivity of Internet Commerce 

Enabler, the language support for JavaScript, and additional feature enhancements for 

integration and interoperability. Combine these ingredients with Microsoft’s .NET open 

environment and a platform is created capable of handling the intense data and 

processor activity required by today’s enterprises for making informed decisions.

on Windows platforms 

• Provides a new application development capability for current Business Information 

Server clients 

• Gives clients the ability to protect their investment in Business Information Server 

while using off-the-shelf development tools such as JavaScript for developing

Business Information Server combines a safe passage approach with updated 

technology for new and existing Business Information Server customers. It 

• Offers safe passage for existing Business Information Server for Windows 

customers. This is a powerful platform for modern client-server and Web-based 

applications. 

• Contains a powerful data manipulation/integration engine that provides not only 

Business Information Server scripting, but also industry-standard, object-oriented 

JavaScript scripting. The very popular JavaScript scripting language provides an 

additional way for developers to build application logic. 

• Provides operating system support for the following: 

− Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit) 

− Windows 2008 R2 (64-bit) 

− Windows XP Professional (32-bit) 

− Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) 

− Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) 

• Provides ease-of-installation enhancements including installation and upgrade 

enhancements for Business Information Server and the option to add the following

• Improves the integration capabilities of Business Information Server by providing an 

outbound interface utilizing ODBC or OLE DB technology. 

• Provides interoperability capabilities with IBM WebSphere Message Queuing, Oracle 

10g and 11g, and BEA Tuxedo. 

• Includes the BIS Developer Workshop, a Windows-based integrated development 

environment (IDE) for JavaScript and a Windows-based editor for Business 

Information Server scripts.

Evaluation Software 

Features 

A 90-day evaluation version of Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows level 

11.1 is available from the Unisys Support site. After the 90-day evaluation period has 

expired, you must purchase a new license if you want to continue running the Business 

Information Server software. You can order a new license by contacting your Unisys 

Account Manager or authorized partner. 

Included with all orders of BIS for Windows level 11.1 is a free copy of RADS Lite 

software from CIBER, Inc., a Unisys partner. 

RADS Lite enables quick and cost-effective development and deployment of BIS 

applications in a GUI or Web environment. Screens and reports are built with simple 

point and click wizards. All screen presentation, input validation, and error messages are 

created automatically with minimal program coding. 

RADS Lite can transform your legacy BIS system by adding a new and user-friendly 

interface. The benefits include: 

• Extend functionality while leveraging your existing investment 

• Eliminate the risk and expense of building a new system from scratch 

• Reduce costs by accelerating your project’s time to completion 

• Make your corporate knowledge available to whomever you choose, anytime, 

anywhere 

Despite being an entry level product, RADS Lite contains all you need to create report 

displays, data entry screens, and other application services with very easy to use 

development tools. When you are ready to add advanced features like Drill Down 

functionality, you can easily upgrade to the RADS Professional version. 

• Active Data Dictionary to catalog databases and define edit rules for input validation 

• Powerful form tools, with features like automatic input validation, popup selection 

lists and calendars, and a drag-and-drop form designer. Web forms can be further 

enhanced with JavaScript to facilitate advanced front-end processing. 

• Report screens easily defined with tools to select fields, their display order, define 

header names, and more 

• Built-in report tools to let end users perform a wide variety of ad-hoc analysis 

functions

Application Development 


This section describes the new features and enhancements for the various application 

development components of the BIS 11.1 release. 

Developer Workshop 

Auto Update 

This feature provides the option to automatically download latest updates to the 

Developer Workshop from the Unisys Support site. If this option is enabled, the 

Developer Workshop periodically checks the Unisys support site for interim corrections 

(IC) and minor updates. If an update is available, the user has the option to upgrade to 

the latest available Workshop version. 

Change the Current BIS Execution Location 

This feature allows you to change the current execution line on the server. The 

Developer Workshop allows you to change the execution line only on the active debug 

script. There are various ways to change the current BIS execution line, see the 

Developer Workshop Help (6891 8952) for more details. 

Execute BIS Run Commands from the Evaluation/Expression Debug 

Window 

This feature allows you to enter BIS run syntax in the Evaluation/Expression window to 

be executed on the server while in a Developer Workshop debug session. Any BIS run 

syntax can be executed. The current execution line is not changed unless directed by 

the executed BIS command. 

Connection State Saved when a Connection is Closed 

When a connection is closed the state of all open projects and scripts or reports is 

saved. When the connection is reopened all projects and scripts or reports are restored 

to the same state when the connection was closed. 

Start a Debug Session Using Debug Step Into and GO (Run) Buttons 

The Developer Workshop is enhanced to allow starting a debug session using the debug 

buttons: Step Into and Go (Run). When you click the Step Into or GO buttons, the current 

active document starts in debug mode and begins executing. This allows a one-click 

method to start a debug session. 

User-specific Configuration Settings 

The Developer Workshop is enhanced to store user configuration settings into a userspecific 

location on the system. Users will no longer share Developer Workshop 

configuration settings.

JavaScript Features 

The following are the JavaScript features for the BIS 11.1 release. 

BIS JavaScripts to Function as ICE Services 

The standardized entry function is enhanced for ICEAdmin to be able to register and call 

JavaScript ICE services. A release set of helper subroutines assist in referencing Web 

browser variables, error recording (from try-catch), and State Management reports. 

JavaScript services or BIS script services that call JavaScript subroutines require an 

optional dual-use Web input to reference Web Browser input. The new dual-use Web 

input is broadly usable, but optional. The new dual-use Web input feature does not affect 

existing ICE services unless you open a repository object and select dual-use Web input 

in ICEAdmin. You must not select this feature for category Component Builder tools or 

for category iceDrill tools (table development and administration); but you can use it for 

services built by Component Builder and for services that display with iceDrill table 

presentation services. 

The ICEAdmin enhancement enables an ICE service to set a run name to be called 

instead of call, cabinet, drawer, and report; this allows the run security constraints to 

govern execution. 

JavaScript Debugging 

The JavaScript Session object is enhanced to enable application developers to 

programmatically initiate a Developer Workshop debugging session. This is 

accomplished using the new Session.debug() method. Method arguments enable the 

developer to have complete control over where and when debugging occurs. 

JavaScript XML Processing Extensions 

The BIS JavaScript application programming environment is enhanced to include new 

extensions to allow processing of XML document data. The BIS programming 

extensions to support XML are based on the ECMAScript for XML (E4X) standard, which 

is an outgrowth of the previous ECMAScript Language specification. 

JavaScript Template-driven Document Generation 

The BIS JavaScript Dataset object is enhanced to allow records to be added to the calling 

Dataset object under scripted control of a specified document template. BIS document 

templates use ASP-like markup syntax. This allows a combination of procedural and 

literal data to be used in generating the added dataset records. This enhancement is 

especially suited for Web browser and Web service environments.

JavaScript Java Client Interface 


The BIS JavaScript runtime environment is enhanced to facilitate access to Enterprise 

Java Beans (EJBs). Access to both stateless and stateful session beans is supported. 

Developers can call bean methods, passing arguments and receiving returned data. 

This additional capability provides a complement to the BIS J2EE Server already 

available.

Data Access 

This section describes the new features and enhancements for the various data access 

components of the BIS 11.1 release. 

MRI ADO.NET Interface 

BIS now allows access to the following types of ADO.NET databases: 

• Microsoft SQL Server 

• Oracle 

• OLE DB 

• ODBC 

PostgreSQL 

Due to the deprecation of the T-LIBS interface to SQL Server, users are strongly 

encouraged to develop new applications with the new ADO.NET interface, which is the 

database subtype of SQL Server. Current BIS applications can migrate from the SQL 

Server interface, however there might be differences in the exact data type and column 

width returned from the ADO.NET interface to SQL Server. 

Note: Unisys Trans-IT ODBC driver is not applicable through ADO.NET on 64 bit 

machines. 

BIS level 11.1 MAPPER Relational Interface (MRI) is now certified with PostgreSQL 

ODBC driver version 8.03.02 and PostgreSQL OLEDB driver version 1.0.0.20. 

MYSQL Native API Interface 

BIS now allows native access to MySQL 3.51, 5.0, and 5.1. 

ODBC Server 

The ODBC Server feature is now supported in both BIS for Microsoft Windows 32-bit 

and 64-bit environments.

Functionality Enhancements 

Audit Enhancements 


The AUDIT utility script is enhanced to provide the following functions: 

• Improve handling of large audit trails 

• Detect audit trail corruption during the following scenarios: 

− System recovery 

It provides an option for you to recover updates from audit backup during system 

recovery. 

− Single or multiple report recovery using AUDIT run 

It informs you about the audit trail corruption during single or multiple report 

recovery using AUDIT run. 

− Audit verification 

− Audit backup 

BIS Access from Windows Command Prompt 

Capacity 

A new BIS executable (BATCHMAPPER.EXE) is provided on Windows systems. The 

BATCHMAPPER.EXE program is a fully supported method of starting BIS scripts from 

the Windows command prompt, scheduled tasks, or any other Windows environment 

that can start Windows processes. 

This feature increases the maximum number of concurrent user sessions on 64-bit 

Windows and Linux BIS platforms. A maximum of 2000 user sessions are now allowed 

on Intel EM64T platforms and 1024 user sessions are allowed on 32-bit platforms. 

G Option on F and @FND (Find Function) 

The new G option is added to @FND for Open BIS. This option already exists on @FND in 

BIS for OS 2200.

Graphical Interface Business Information Server (GI-BIS) 

Enhancements 

@CBX Statement 

A new “A” option is added to the @CBX statement to allow sending of input 

automatically from Combo Edit Box. It is not required to press Enter. The content typed 

in the Combo Edit Box is passed as an input automatically after a delay of one second. 

@LST Statement 

The @LST statement is enhanced with the following options: 

• Disable item selection by a user 

• Inhibit automatic addition of horizontal scrollbar 

@MNU Statement 

A new “A” option is added to the @MNU statement to allow addition of hot keys. 

@PCF statement 

The @PCF statement is enhanced to return the size of a file in bytes. 

@WIN Statement 

A new option is added to the @WIN statement to allow the window to automatically add 

vertical and/or horizontal scroll bars if any visible child window is truncated. 

MPC Session 

GUI Sign On 

An MPC session can now display a close alert message to avoid accidental termination 

of the session. 

Windows User-Specific Files in a User-Unique Directory 

All users of GI-BIS (as well as Developer Workshop GI BIS), will automatically create or 

modify GI-BIS files in a unique local application data directory belonging to the Windows 

user. With this change, GI-BIS users that share the same workstation do not share user 

specific files. Each Windows user has directory unique configuration files (MSF files, 

script files), and has directory unique data files that are downloaded during execution. 

This new feature provides a seamless modern interface for users with workstation client 

sessions when signing on and off of their BIS systems. The LOGON run provides a GUI 

interface for users to enter sign-on information or change passwords. This feature adds a 

new security element. When enabled, users are forced to manually enter their BIS 

credentials each time they sign on to their BIS system.

Increase in the Number of Open Window Handles 

The number of Windows handles that can be open is increased to 4000. You can have an 

aggregate limit of 4000 BTN, CBX, EDT, LST, PIC, TXT, and WIN controls concurrently 

open. 

Internet Commerce Enabler Enhancements 

Making Virtual Directories 

This feature enables ICEAdmin to setup new Web gateways for ICE access. It creates a 

gateway to the user-specified directory and ensures that the minimum required files are 

present. For Windows, this includes a gateway to CISystem (Default.asp and 

CIErrorHandler-HTML.asp) and establishes the initial Gatetool records to make the 

operation possible. All maintenance after that can be performed normally. 

User Management Improvements 

• Integrated ICE user registration with the BIS User Registration drawer. 

• User registration controls ICE access and determines if a user can change password 

at ICE logon. These controls are added to the user registration even if ICE is not 

installed. 

• During the UPGRADE run, permission to access ICE and any restriction from 

changing passwords are copied from the existing registration (2E3950). For all other 

user IDs ICE access is not allowed but passwords can be changed. 

• User registration for large departments can be optimized by marking the department 

as sorted. 

ICE Profiles 

Any ICE profile can be applied to an entire department or individual users. This feature 

reduces the maintenance for large departments where most users share the same 

profile of privileges. 

ICE Activity Logging for High Volume 

ICE activity logging for high volume sites (over a million events) can now be recorded in 

several reports and maintained or analyzed on a daily basis. 

Maintain Cross Gateway Session ID in BIS/ICE 

In the previous ICE levels, if two ICE websites (gateways) where hosted on the same 

ICE host server, authentication (session-ID) was associated with the ICE host server but 

specific to each website. Therefore, a new session-ID or login request was required 

every time a user switched between the websites. Now a session-ID for an ICE session 

is marked as applicable at the website (gateway) level and not at the host level. 

Therefore, multiple websites on the same ICE server will run independently.

HTML Consistency 

The HTML coding is changed to conform to HTML 4.01 Transitional with Frameset 

specification. Firefox is supported in addition to Microsoft Internet Explorer for ICE 

features where they are functionally equivalent and independent of the hosting platform. 

Templates are constructed for HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 and 1.1 specifications. This 

feature makes it easier to develop consistent application pages. 

Long Network Path Name 

BIS and MRI are enhanced to handle long domain names. Domain names consisting of a 

maximum of 131 characters can now be included. 

New Script Statement - @DIAG 

@DIAG is a new command that enables script designers to obtain script debug 

information during execution or following a script error. Command options specify the 

exact type of information requested. 

MapAdmin Site Initialization Options 

The Administration Client Initialization and Recovery dialog now provides an option for 

displaying Verbose or Limited messages. The Limited messages option allows the site 

initialization and recovery process to complete faster. 

RDB and @RDB (Run Debug) – Setting the Default Debugger 

The Developer Workshop is the default debugger for BIS. If you do not want the 

Developer Workshop to be the default debugger on your BIS site, you can use the 

MapAdmin administration tool to set the legacy debugger as the default debugger. See 

the BIS MapAdmin Help (7850 2663) for details. Regardless of this setting, if you 

provide either a WorkshopHostAddress or WorkshopPortNumber argument on your 

@RDB command, the debug session attempts to debug using the Developer Workshop. 

See the BIS Command Reference for additional @RDB command information. 

Subroutine Logging 

This feature provides an intermediate level of script logging, where log entries are made 

at the entry and exit of each subroutine called. This allows script logic to be more easily 

tracked and simplifies identification of high-overhead subroutine scripts. 

Totalize Function Enhancement 

The Totalize (TOT) function or TOT statement is enhanced to allow up to 80 operations in 

any one parameter line, and you can use up to two parameter lines.

Unregistered JavaScript Subroutine Calling 


The Call Subroutine (CALL) statement is enhanced to allow unregistered JavaScript 

subroutine calls. Earlier versions only supported a registered subroutine calling interface. 

The unregistered subroutine calling interface is more efficient and should normally be 

used when subroutine security encapsulation is not required.

Security 

Add a User ID to the Administrators Group During 

Installation 

A new installation dialog is provided to enable you to optionally add a user ID to the BIS 

Administrators group. More information about this feature can be found in the Business 

Information Server for Microsoft Windows Installation Help (7850 2671) and the 

Business Information Server Windows Administration Help (7846 0284). 

BIS-to-BIS Network Security 

Encryption of user or application data is added to the BIS-to-BIS networking interface. 

BIS administrators can now indicate that encryption of user or application network data is 

either preferred or required. A site level setting defines the minimum network security 

requirement for all inbound and outbound BIS-to-BIS connections. A new field in the 

Network Configuration Report allows outbound security settings on a per-destination 

basis. 

Additionally, application designers can indicate minimum security requirements on a 

per-connection basis through the Network Sign-on (@NET) script statement. An 

application setting can increase but not lower the minimum security settings already set 

by the BIS administrator. 

Note: The default site setting for BIS network security is changed to “Login 

information preferred”. This means that BIS session establishment information is 

encrypted when sent over a network. If the peer site does not support encryption, the 

information is sent in clear text. In BIS 10, the default setting was “None preferred”, 

which sends login information in clear text. When upgrading an installation to BIS 11, the 

network security settings of each existing BIS site is changed to the new default, if its 

current setting is “None preferred”. 

Developer Workshop Data and Network Security 

The Developer Workshop is enhanced to use network data encryption when 

communicating with BIS. A new connection property is provided to enable network data 

encryption on a per-connection basis. This property is optional and can be selected if 

encryption is required. A global Developer Workshop setting is also added to allow 

elevating a debug session to use network data encryption regardless of the BIS server 

network data encryption settings. 

GI-BIS Network Session Data Encryption 

The GI-BIS network interface is enhanced to support encryption of session data. This 

feature allows BIS administrators and/or GI-BIS users to ensure that information 

exchanged between a GI-BIS client and a BIS server is secure. This enhancement is 

similar to the BIS-to-BIS network security enhancement.

Increased Limit for Password Characters During 

Installation 

You can now use passwords containing a maximum of 50 characters for the log-on 

accounts of BIS for Microsoft Windows. 

Security Report and Group Management using PCMA 

The Security task menu now has the option to add or delete Security Registration 

reports. It also has the option to add, modify, and delete Security Group permissions 

within a Security Registration report.

Scaling 

The Business Information Server level 11.1 is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The 

32-bit and 64-bit versions are available on separate CD media. The CD requires a license 

key for the activation of the General Purpose Edition, 90-Day Evaluation Edition, and 

Personal Edition. 

The license keys for the General Purpose Edition and Personal Edition are entered 

through a dialog box during installation, validated, and retained in encrypted form in the 

Windows operating system registry. The license key for the 90-Day Evaluation Edition is 

automatically placed in the license edit keys if you choose to check the 90-day evaluation 

check box. 

BIS performance scaling on Intel servers with four or more processors running Microsoft 

Windows has been improved. 

Up to 9999 Reports in a Drawer 

Note: This scalability enhancement applies only to the 64-bit platforms. 

Site-level configuration now allows drawers to be generated or regenerated with a limit 

of up to 9999 reports. The default setting is 5000. Changing the site-level setting 

(through MapAdmin) does not alter the limit on existing drawers.

License Types 

There are two types of licenses available for BIS for Windows: 

• Named user license 

• Processor license 

Prior to BIS for Windows level 10.1, users were defined by the number of concurrent 

sessions open at any one time. With BIS level 10.1 this method of defining BIS resource 

access is no longer used. Continuing with BIS level 11.1 all users are defined as named 

users. Named users are individuals or devices authorized to use the BIS resources 

regardless of whether the individual is actively accessing BIS resources at any given 

time. A device is counted as a named user if the device accesses BIS resources. 

For example: If one person has three Graphical Interface sessions open, only one named 

license is required. If ten people are accessing the BIS engine at different times, each 

person is required to have a license. 

A processor license is used when the number of named users is undefined or it is more 

economical to license by processor rather than by named users. Each processor 

assigned to a server—or (virtual) partition—where the BIS server engine is executing 

must be licensed. With processor licenses, it is not necessary to identify all of the 

named users. With BIS release 11.1, the processor terminology is continued to be used. 

However, a processor will be defined as having up to four cores. Processors will be 

calculated by taking the number of cores assigned to the BIS partition and dividing by 

four. When there are fractions (six cores in a socket), it is rolled up to a whole number. 

Note: For both the named user license and the processor license, there is a physical 

limit of 2000 current user sessions that can be attached to the BIS engine. 

Software Maintenance 

Software maintenance is optionally available for BIS level 11.1. This service provides 

access to telephone support, access to the support Web site, self-help via the support 

Web site, fixes, interim corrections, and in-level updates (for example, a no-charge 

update to level 11.2 if it were offered). This service does not provide for a no-charge 

upgrade to a major release (for example, level 12.x). For more information see Section 6. 

Software Subscriptions 

To complement named user and processor licenses in the budgeting of new releases, 

software subscriptions are also available. Software subscriptions are annual license fees 

that provide the right to receive future releases of BIS for Windows at no additional cost. 

It is important to note that if a software license consists of more than one item (style), 

then the corresponding software subscription must be purchased for each software item 

(style) purchased. 

Multiple Servers/Partitions 

If multiple BIS engines are executing on multiple servers or partitions within a server, 

then each BIS engine must be licensed either by a named user or processor license.

Backup BIS Servers 


BIS level 11.1 may be installed at no cost on a server designated as a backup server for 

business continuance or disaster recovery. Reasonable testing on a regular basis is 

permitted to ensure that failover executes properly. If the BIS installed on the backup 

server is used for anything other than disaster recovery such as development, testing, or 

training, then an appropriate BIS license is required.

**SQL Server 2005 or 2008 no longer supplies the development tools or library that is 

required to support the Native API Interface. Microsoft recommends that you use OLE 

DB or ODBC for access to SQL Server 2005 or 2008. However, if you had the Native API 

Interface in use on your system with SQL Server 7, the corresponding .dll for that 

interface can be used with SQL Server 2005 or 2008 in 32-bit mode. 

Note: Customers that use the Sun Java VM with Internet Explorer must use version 

1.4.2 or higher. 

To install one of the available Business Information Server client/server interfaces on a 

workstation, ensure that your workstation is running one of the following: 

• Windows XP Professional (32-bit) 

• Windows Vista Business (32-bit or 64-bit) 

• Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) 

To access Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows level 11.1 from a 

workstation, you need to install both of the following software packages: 

• Graphical Interface for Business Information Server level 5.4, which is included on 

the BIS for Windows CD

Network Requirements 


Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows requires the following: 

• Network interface for each workstation on the network 

• TCP/IP support on the Windows Server and workstations 

Note: If you do not have a network card installed, you must change your network 

configuration settings. Select Network from Control Panel and then select Add Adapter. 

In the list of adapters, select MS Loopback Adapter and save your change.

This section describes restrictions and limitations applying to Business Information 

Server for Microsoft Windows level 11.1. It presents information under the following

Operational Restrictions and Limitations 

Compatibility of Existing COM Components on EM64T 

It is not possible to load 32-bit in-process components in 64-bit BIS. Windows restricts 

the loading of 32-bit dlls into 64-bit processes. However, existing 32-bit out-of-process 

components can be loaded in 64-bit BIS. 

Oracle Support 

Oracle 8i and 9i are no longer supported by BIS. 

WebSphere MQ 

Date/Time 

WebSphere MQ must be installed before you can run the Message Queuing feature. 

If both the exact date and exact time are required in a BIS script, they both must be 

obtained in a single @LDV or in a single @DC run command. Multiple fields of a 

date/time reserved word must be loaded with a single @LDV command.

Amount of Server Shared Memory 

The maximum size of BIS server shared memory available depends on the operating 

system build and patches installed, as well as on the features of BIS that are in use at 

your site. On 32-bit Windows operating systems, more than 1500 MB is generally 

available for use by BIS. However, if you are using the TPMAPPER feature, the amount 

of BIS server shared memory is limited to 1200 MB. 

Occasionally, installing Windows security patches has adversely affected the maximum 

amount of shared memory available. If BIS sites do not start after applying Windows 

patches, the MapAdmin program should be used to reduce the BIS server shared 

memory value. In general, a value less than 1000 MB will work regardless of the patches 

installed. Reducing the BIS server shared memory value might require the BIS sites to 

be reconfigured to use less shared memory. Generally, the easiest value to reduce is the 

"Number of Blocks for Caching Results" on the site’s Capacity property page. 

Scripts, Functions, and Statements 

Be aware of the following restrictions or limitations that apply to scripts, functions, and 

statements: 

• In MAPPER Query Language (MQL), the maximum number of operands or operators 

in an arithmetic expression or a WHERE clause cannot exceed 384. 

• Do not use the Command Handler (CHD) statement if you are using a Call subroutine 

(CALL), a Run Start (RUN), or a Run subroutine (RSR) statement. If you do use the 

CHD statement, register it in the main script and do not access it in any lower-level 

routines. Using the CHD statement within subroutines or CALL routines leads to 

unpredictable results. 

Storage and Processing Capacity 

The maximum number of cabinets is increased to 4,000. However, cabinets 3,900 

through 4,000 are reserved for future internal Business Information Server development 

and enhancements. 

Business Information Server allows up to 2000 simultaneously active reports for each 

site. This includes active reports for any user or software process (such as MAPQUE, 

DISPATCHER, APPLOAD, and PURGE) attached to that site. An active report is any 

report that is on display, being executed, or in use by a manual function or a statement, 

such as Search or SRH.

ODBC Server Restrictions and Limitations 

Be aware of the following considerations and limitations of the Open Database 

Connectivity (ODBC) server feature: 

• Only one ODBC server is supported. If the Business Information Server for Microsoft 

Windows and Internet Commerce Enabler both are installed on the same system, 

the ODBC server is installed and associated with the first installation. 

• If another copy of Business Information Server is installed as a separate Business 

Information Server installation, the ODBC server feature works with the first 

Business Information Server installation only. If you wish to install a newer version of 

Business Information Server and use ODBC with that version, you must perform an 

upgrade process on the first Business Information Server or remove it and install the 

later version of Business Information Server. 

• With Microsoft Access, you can use design view to design select queries. However, 

you need to use SQL-specific pass-through to design, insert, delete, and update 

queries. 

• The Table Description and Column Comments fields in the OTBL script are not 

passed back to the Microsoft Access ODBC client application. Therefore, you cannot 

observe these entries on the Table Properties and Field Description tabs in Microsoft 

Access. 

• You must restart Microsoft Query before you can view table data sets defined with 

the OTBL script. 

ODBC Driver Restrictions and Limitations 

The following are the restrictions and limitations for ODBC drivers: 

• Only MySQL ODBC driver versions 3.51 and 5.1 are supported. 

• Unisys Trans-IT ODBC driver is not applicable through ADO.NET on 64 bit machines. 

Future Considerations 

In GI-BIS, the Windows template type used to create connection scripts will be 

discontinued in a future level. All users are encouraged to migrate to connection scripts 

based on the Alternative Credentials or Location-Only templates. Connection scripts 

based on these templates provide security for user credentials and optionally provide 

data transmission security.
