Photographs looking down into the tank. To give scale, in each one the ‘top cross-bar’ is labelled: it is 0.8 m long and at a depth of 2.03
m. (a) Photograph looking down into the water tank from above, showing the target (T) and source (S). The hose (H) leads down to the
bubble generator, whose tip is arrowed (G). The bubble cloud can just be seen forming in front of this tip. In this figure the target is at
a range of 1.42 m from the source but this could be varied for different experiments (the tank test data in this paper is all for a target
range of 2.6 m). (b) A similar view to part (a), but here the target is obscured by the rising bubble cloud, which fills most of the space
between the source and target, and in which the target is enveloped. The ropes upon which the target is suspended can be seen
disappearing in to the cloud. The rig holding the source is still visible. (c) A more spatially uniform but less dense bubble cloud is
imaged. The acoustic data of this paper are taken with this cloud.
Mounting the four TWIPS transducers into the towfish for the sea trials
The towfish is pulled along using a cable (the near-vertical
black line at the centre of the image) mounted from the Aframe
of the RV Bill Conway, whilst the slack from the
electrical cables is taken up manually (image taken prior to
entering wake, as we leave harbour)
