To whom should you talk? Disability Related Funding Erasmus Funding If you have a severe disability or exceptional special needs then you may be entitled to extra Erasmus funding to cover associated costs on your Erasmus placement. A formal application has to be made for this funding and strict eligibility criteria apply. You should also be aware that you may not receive any payment until part way through your placement. In the past, students have been successful in gaining funds towards the costs of travel, accommodation and salary for support assistants. Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) If you are in receipt of DSA, this funding will usually continue during your period of study abroad. However, if you are in receipt of the maximum allowance, and your study period exceeds the length of a Leeds academic year, you may need to find additional sources of funding to cover that extra period. Social services funding If you are in receipt of social services funding, e.g., to cover the costs of support with daily living tasks, you will need to check with social services that this funding will continue during your period of study abroad. Experience has shown that the continuation of this funding is not guaranteed and lengthy discussions often need to take place about this issue, so you are encouraged to make early contact with your social services department. Other sources of funding SKILL (National Bureau for Disabled Students) has a list of other organisations that offer grants to students with disabilities. Again, you are advised to contact organisations early to ensure application deadlines are met. 13
