CHEMISTRY! This will be one of the most fun, yet challenging courses in high school. You will come
away with a lot of new knowledge of how the stuff that things are made of behaves but more
importantly you will know how to do chemistry.
ATTENDANCE
1. Students will be in their assigned seats when the bell rings.
2. The third unexcused tardy in a semester will result in a 1-hour detention.
3. The sixth tardy results in a referral to the Assistant Principal, who assigns two hours of
Saturday School. The citizenship grade will be lowered to “N”.
4. The ninth tardy is like the sixth, but worse (four hours and a “U”).
5. Each unapproved absence will result in a 1-hour detention. Also, there will be a loss of one
unit of credit for every three unapproved absences.
6. If you have an appointment that requires you to be excused from class early, you must obtain
a pass from the attendance office or a transfer list from an advisor or coach before coming to
class. Show the pass to the instructor before class starts.
CITIZENSHIP AND WORK HABITS
1. Most important is that each person will respect the rights and sensitivities of others.
2. Students will not disrupt the class with excessive talking.
3. No food or beverages will be brought into the classroom.
4. No personal electronic devices (e.g. cell phones) except calculators are to be used or handled
in the classroom. Such devices will be confiscated immediately.
5. Students’ work will represent their own efforts and will be neatly done.
6. Recommended materials to bring to class each day:
• a three-ring binder with a section labeled Chemistry or a folder for only chemistry
• notebook paper or a spiral notebook with perforations to be used only for chemistry.

• a scientific calculator
CLASSWORK AND HOMEWORK
1. The schedule for the week will be on a white board every Monday and will be displayed for
the entire week. You will be expected to check the board every day for additions or deletions
and keep your student organizer updated with that information. There will be no excuse for
not knowing when an assignment is due.
2. Generally, there will be “warm-up” exercises at the beginning of the period. You are
expected to start on this work as soon as the bell rings as announced.
3. Written homework assignments are due at the beginning of the period on the due date.
Some assignments will be stamped and corrected by students in class.

4. On the day of the test, all homework assignments are assembled into a “work packet” and
turned in to be graded. Each assignment is typically worth 5 to 15 points if complete.
5. Assignments missing required stamps lose 50% of their point value.
LABORATORY EXERCISES
1. Lab work must be completed by the student with their assigned lab partner unless otherwise
arranged by the instructor.
2. You are responsible for the proper care of the lab materials and equipment and for clean-up
when you finish.
3. Lab reports are usually completed separately by each student and will usually be turned in at
the beginning of class on the day specified. Lab reports are worth 10 to 30 points. Late
reports will be accepted with a 50% penalty.
TEST AND QUIZZES
1. Short quizzes will be given periodically. The will usually be announced in advance but some
will be “pop” quizzes. These quizzes will vary in point value.
2. Unit tests are given every one to three weeks and typically cover one or two chapters.
3. A cumulative final exam will be given each semester on the material covered during that
semester only.
MAKE-UP POLICY
1. Students are responsible for getting instructions and handouts from the instructor when they
return from an absence. Lecture notes may be copied from another student.
2. Completed homework assignments must be turned in or shown to the instructor for a stamp
on the day you return from an absence.
3. Missed classwork will be due on the day following your return to school except in the case of
extended illness (more than two days).
4. Any labs that you miss must be made up after school or by appointment. Alternative
assignments for missed lab work will only be allowed for extreme circumstances.
5. Make-up quizzes will be given in class upon the student’s return to class. However, if the quiz
has already been returned to students, the student will be exempt from making up the quiz.

illness.
GRADING POLICY
1. Your grade is determined by a simple point system on a fixed
scale. Each assignment has a point value. Your letter grade for
the quarter or semester is determined by comparing your total
points to the total points possible. The grade scale is shown at
the right.

2. Progress reports are mailed home on the fifth week of every quarter for students earning a
grade of C or lower.
3. There will be limited extra credit work.
