Dear Students and Parents,
Drawing and Painting
Sunny Hills High School
2012-13
Welcome to Drawing and Painting! My name is Ms. Sanders, and for the next two
semesters I will be guiding you towards developing your skills in drawing and painting! You will
have the opportunity to use such media as graphite (pencil), charcoal, soft pastels, scratchboard,
pen & ink, acrylic, and watercolor paint. We will study a variety of subjects, including but not
limited to landscapes, animals, portraiture, the human figure, and a variety of objects we find in
our everyday environment.
Although Drawing and Painting will likely be one of the most fun classes you take, it is not
necessarily an “easy A.” Students are expected to complete homework assignments and projects
on time, and to be productive in class on a daily basis. Rubrics, detailing what is expected for
each project, are handed out at the beginning of each unit, so that students have a clear
understanding of what goals they are expected to achieve.
Please keep in mind that Drawing and Painting is not a competitive environment! It is a beginning
level art class, in which every student is graded based upon their own ability level, effort, and
improvement over time. Students that turn in all assignments and put in daily effort will, at
minimum, receive passing grades.
Art classes depend upon strong, diverse community environments, populated by students with a
wide range of backgrounds and ideas. Students will be encouraged to discuss their artwork with
their peers, and work together to brainstorm ideas. Although helpful suggestions are encouraged,
cruel and/or rude comments about other students, or their artwork, will not be tolerated. Drawing
and Painting class is a supportive learning environment, where students can develop their artmaking
skills and hone their creative ideas without fear of being embarrassed or shamed.
I look forward to working with you this year. I am always happy to answer questions or provide
help before and after school. You can reach me by phone at 714.626.4310 or by email at
asanders@fjuhsd.net. I strongly encourage parents to contact me with any questions or concerns,
or to schedule a class visit, as I believe that parent support is of great importance to student
development. I will update grades frequently on Aeries Browser Interface (ABI), the online grade
reporting system, and I encourage students and parents to check grades on a regular basis.
Please take a moment to read our class rules and policies listed on the following pages. After
reading, please sign and return the contract page. Thank you and I look forward to our year
together!
Sincerely,
Anna Sanders
CLASSROOM ROUTINES
• Students must ask permission to use the restroom, or to leave class for any other reason.
• A student who is tardy should notify the teacher that they have arrived, in case the
teacher has already marked them absent.
• After an absence (whether excused or unexcused), it is the student’s responsibility to
check with the teacher for any missed assignments.
• Late work will be docked 5% for each day it is late. Late work will not be accepted after
one week has passed. If, due to outside circumstances, a student is unable to finish
a project on time, the student must notify the teacher of the special circumstances
in advance of the due date.
• Students will be given opportunities to receive extra credit. Extra credit can be earned
by going above and beyond expectations on a given assignment, or by visiting an
art-related place or event (such as a museum or gallery show) and writing a onepage
essay about the experience.
• Cell phones must be kept put away at all times. Upon first offense, the cell phone will
be confiscated for the class period. Upon subsequent offenses, the cell phone will
be confiscated for the remainder of the school day.
• Students may get up to gather materials when needed, except during instruction.
• Students will work until the five-minute bell rings, at which time they may begin
cleaning up. Once their area is clean, students should wait at their table for the
class-end bell to ring.
• Students are expected to have materials in class every day, and keep materials in good
condition.
SUNNY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL TARDINESS AND ABSENCE POLICY
- A student is considered tardy if they are not in the classroom when the bell rings.
- 3 tardies = 1 hour after school detention
- 6 tardies = 2 hour Saturday school
- 9 tardies = 4 hour Saturday school and referral to dean
- 1 unit point lost for every 3 unexcused absences

ACADEMIC HONESTY
Students are expected to create authentic, original works of art that reflect their own
abilities and ideas. Working on another person’s project for them constitutes academic
dishonesty. Consequences for academic dishonesty are in line with the school policy, and
may include receiving a zero on the assignment, parent conference, and/or suspension,
depending upon the severity of the infraction.
CLASSROOM RULES:
• BE ON TIME
-Be in the classroom when the bell rings.
• BE PREPARED
- Have your materials and artwork with you in class every day.
- Turn in assignments on time.
• BE RESPECTFUL
- Listen quietly during instruction or when others are speaking.
- Respect others, their ideas, their personal space, and their property.
- Participate in keeping a clean classroom environment.
- Keep comments about other students’ artwork positive and constructive.
• BE PRODUCTIVE
- Work in class every day. Failure to do so will negatively affect your grade.
- Work on art during art class, not on homework for other classes.
- Keep cell phones put away for the duration of the class period.
• BE POSITIVE
- Have a positive attitude, and put forth your best effort each day.
POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES
• Extra credit points assigned to students who go “above and beyond” in artwork (i.e.
experimenting with more challenging media or techniques, putting in extra effort
and time, making multiples of one project, etc.).
• Extra credit points assigned to students who attend an art-related event or place
(museum, gallery opening, etc.) outside of class, and submit a one-page essay
about their experience.
NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES
• First Offense – Verbal reminder
• Second Offense – Moved for the day
• Third Offense – Detention
• Fourth Offense – Call to home
• Fifth Offense – Referral to office
GRADING POLICY
Grades are based on two main categories: minor projects (sketchbooks, homework,
research, technical exercises, quick-writes) and major projects. Small assignments make
up 35% of student grades, while large projects make up 55%. The class final will be
worth 10%. Late work will be accepted, but will be docked 5% per each day late. Grades
will be posted on ABI on an ongoing basis.

GRADING SCALE
A+: 97 – 100 A: 93 – 96 A-: 90 – 92
B+: 87 – 89 B: 83 – 86 B-: 80 – 82
C+: 77 – 79 C: 73 – 76 C-: 70 - 72
D+: 67 - 69 D: 63 - 66 D-: 60 - 62 F: 0 - 59
This is what I will be looking for when I evaluate you and your work:
1. Effort: Did you push yourself beyond what you thought possible?
2. Work meets requirements: Does the work fulfill objectives/criteria stated at
introduction of project?
3. Innovation of design: Creativity/uniqueness of idea and development
4. Craftsmanship: Is work done neatly? Is there attention to detail?
5. Work done on time: Is work done on due date given at introduction?
Goals for this course:
1. Develop and expand your aesthetic perception (how you view art).
2. Develop and expand what you know about art and your skills to express your
ideas imaginatively (verbally and technically).
3. Gain knowledge of historical and cultural developments in art and various ways
for looking at them.
4. Learn and improve craftsmanship.
5. Make connections to other cultures and career possibilities.
LAB DONATION
