Fullerton Joint Union High School District Sunny Hills High School Grading Guidelines and Shared Responsibilities, Attendance and Behavior Expectations, And Essential Curriculum Standards of the Course 2012-2013 Drawing and Painting Course Syllabus Teacher: Anna Sanders School Phone: 714-626-4310 Email: asanders@fjuhsd.net CLASSROOM ROUTINES • Students must ask permission to use the restroom, or to leave class for any other reason. • A student who is tardy should notify the teacher that they have arrived, in case the teacher has already marked them absent. • After an absence (whether excused or unexcused), it is the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher for any missed assignments. • Late work will be docked 5% for each day it is late. Late work will not be accepted after one week has passed. If, due to outside circumstances, a student is unable to finish a project on time, the student must notify the teacher of the special circumstances in advance of the due date. • Students will be given opportunities to receive extra credit. Extra credit can be earned by going above and beyond expectations on a given assignment, or by visiting an art-related place or event (such as a museum or gallery show) and writing a onepage essay about the experience. • Cell phones must be kept put away at all times. Upon first offense, the cell phone will be confiscated for the class period. Upon subsequent offenses, the cell phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day. • Students may get up to gather materials when needed, except during instruction. • Students will work until the five-minute bell rings, at which time they may begin cleaning up. Once their area is clean, students should wait at their table for the class-end bell to ring. • Students are expected to have materials in class every day, and keep materials in good condition. SUNNY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL TARDINESS AND ABSENCE POLICY - A student is considered tardy if they are not in the classroom when the bell rings. - 3 tardies = 1 hour after school detention - 6 tardies = 2 hour Saturday school - 9 tardies = 4 hour Saturday school and referral to dean - 1 unit point lost for every 3 unexcused absences
ACADEMIC HONESTY Students are expected to create authentic, original works of art that reflect their own abilities and ideas. Working on another person’s project for them constitutes academic dishonesty. Consequences for academic dishonesty are in line with the school policy, and may include receiving a zero on the assignment, parent conference, and/or suspension, depending upon the severity of the infraction. CLASSROOM RULES: • BE ON TIME -Be in the classroom when the bell rings. • BE PREPARED - Have your materials and artwork with you in class every day. - Turn in assignments on time. • BE RESPECTFUL - Listen quietly during instruction or when others are speaking. - Respect others, their ideas, their personal space, and their property. - Participate in keeping a clean classroom environment. - Keep comments about other students’ artwork positive and constructive. • BE PRODUCTIVE - Work in class every day. Failure to do so will negatively affect your grade. - Work on art during art class, not on homework for other classes. - Keep cell phones put away for the duration of the class period. • BE POSITIVE - Have a positive attitude, and put forth your best effort each day. POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES • Extra credit points assigned to students who go “above and beyond” in artwork (i.e. experimenting with more challenging media or techniques, putting in extra effort and time, making multiples of one project, etc.). • Extra credit points assigned to students who attend an art-related event or place (museum, gallery opening, etc.) outside of class, and submit a one-page essay about their experience. NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES • First Offense – Verbal reminder • Second Offense – Moved for the day • Third Offense – Detention • Fourth Offense – Call to home • Fifth Offense – Referral to office GRADING POLICY Grades are based on two main categories: minor projects (sketchbooks, homework, research, technical exercises, quick-writes) and major projects. Small assignments make up 35% of student grades, while large projects make up 55%. The class final will be worth 10%. Late work will be accepted, but will be docked 5% per each day late. Grades will be posted on ABI on an ongoing basis.
