European Film 22 German 22 Intercultural Communication 23 Russian 23 Philosophy 24 Sociological Studies 28 Town and Regional Planning 30 Archaeology Taking a module in Archaeology can give you some very useful insights into past civilisations, their influence on our own or other European cultures, and an understanding of how we learn about and interpret the past, as well as introducing you to the principles of archaeological study itself. This breadth means that a module in Archaeology is a good choice for students of virtually any other subject in Arts and Humanities. The Department of Archaeology has six modules you can choose from; all of these are 20-‐credit modules, and require no previous knowledge of archaeology. AAP106 Archaeology in the Field 20 Credits AUTUMN Prerequisite qualification: None Teaching hours: Lectures (weekly Tues 10-‐11, Wed 10-‐11), Field Classes (Wed 2-‐5, weeks 2-‐6&8), Tutorials (weeks 6&10), multiple groups, times tba) Description: How do archaeologists go about excavating ancient remains? What really happens on an archaeological site? How do we know where to look in the first place? This module takes students through the state-‐of-‐the-‐art methods of archaeology in the field. It covers how to survey for buried sites using geophysics, fieldwalking and aerial photography. Surveying in unusual circumstances, such as graveyards or ancient woodlands, is considered. The practical techniques involved in excavating remains of all periods are examined, ranging from how to understand soil types to the uncovering of fragile artefacts. We look at the problems of excavating special sites such as cemeteries and caves, and find out how the results are published.
