Introduction<br />

<strong>The</strong> land (Land Registry title no WSX 285620) lies to the North <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Street on the edge<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bramber village and adjoining the River Adur to the East. <strong>The</strong> land extends overall to<br />

approximately 38.50 acres (15.58Ha) and provides seasonal mowing and livestock<br />

grazing as part <strong>of</strong> Bramber Brooks as well as being an area rich in bird and wildlife and<br />

with lovely walks through and beyond. Planning consent was granted on 23/11/2012<br />

(valid for 3 years) by Horsham District Council (ref DC/12/1617) for 4 private horse<br />

stables plus hay/fodder store and tack room, all to be <strong>of</strong> timber construction, plus<br />

associated hardstanding area and access track to made up with Fittleworth stone or the<br />

like.<br />

<strong>The</strong> land includes the site <strong>of</strong> historic Medieval saltworks, listed a Scheduled Ancient<br />

Monument (No. 29253) and <strong>of</strong> archaeological importance, plus noted by the local<br />

authority as a site <strong>of</strong> nature conservation importance. This group <strong>of</strong> Salterns and a<br />

possible moat were formerly located within the grounds <strong>of</strong> Bramber Castle. <strong>The</strong> land does<br />

not include any Single Farm Payment entitlements. No services are connected.<br />

History<br />

<strong>The</strong> land at <strong>The</strong> Street, Bramber lies close to Bramber Castle, parts <strong>of</strong> which castle remain<br />

and which was built on a knoll approximately 120’ above the River Adur. William de<br />

Braose built his castle in Bramber in about 1073 and founded a borough beneath its walls,<br />

and also the Church <strong>of</strong> St Nicholas at Bramber which was originally built as a chapel to<br />

the castle. <strong>The</strong> building has shared in the general decline <strong>of</strong> these historic buildings in<br />

Bramber, and also suffered considerable damage during the Civil War period, particularly<br />

in 1643 when Bramber Castle was destroyed and the East end <strong>of</strong> the church partially<br />

devastated.<br />

Situation<br />

<strong>The</strong> land is located within ¾ mile <strong>of</strong> the Old Market Town <strong>of</strong> Steyning with a<br />

comprehensive range <strong>of</strong> facilities including a wide range <strong>of</strong> traditional local shops, public<br />

houses, restaurants/bistro’s, tea rooms trades and services as well as a health and sports<br />

centre, with swimming pool, and other community facilities. Shoreham-by-Sea,<br />

approximately 5½ miles to the South-East, has a main line railway station (with services<br />

along the South Coast to Gatwick and London Victoria) a small airport and a harbour.<br />

<strong>The</strong> coastal city <strong>of</strong> Brighton and town <strong>of</strong> Worthing are both approximately 9 miles distant<br />

and <strong>of</strong>fer an excellent range <strong>of</strong> shops, trades, services and entertainment facilities.<br />

Horsham, which is reached via the A24, is about 15 miles to the North. It, too, <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

main line railway station with trains to London Victoria and London Bridge. Gatwick is<br />

about 28 miles away by road. <strong>The</strong> A24 at Washington is about 4½ miles away and the<br />

A27 at Shoreham-by-Sea is approximately 4 miles.<br />

entrance to the land will be found opposite the historic St. Mary’s house and gardens.<br />
