Consider "common" people: those who have not yet had <strong>the</strong>ir first experience<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> perception <strong>of</strong> emptiness. Both situations apply to <strong>the</strong>m for physical<br />

matter and all o<strong>the</strong>r existing objects: <strong>the</strong>se things appear to <strong>the</strong>m to exist<br />

truly, and <strong>the</strong>y believe in <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y appear.<br />

Consider now bodhisattvas who have reached one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pure levels. Even<br />

though objects appear to <strong>the</strong>ir minds, during what we call <strong>the</strong> "subsequent<br />

period," as something which exists truly, <strong>the</strong>y have no belief in <strong>the</strong>m this<br />

way. And this is because nei<strong>the</strong>r situation applies to realized beings who are<br />

not yet Buddhas and who are perceiving <strong>the</strong> real nature <strong>of</strong> things directly;<br />

that is, physical matter and o<strong>the</strong>r objects do not appear to <strong>the</strong>m as if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

existed truly, and <strong>the</strong>y do not believe that <strong>the</strong>se objects exist that way.<br />

The Consequence and Independent groups <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle-Way School hold<br />

<strong>the</strong> same belief about <strong>the</strong> following things; both schools hold <strong>the</strong>m to be what<br />

is denied by <strong>the</strong> reasoning which examines <strong>the</strong> ultimate:<br />

a thing that could exist truly;<br />

a thing that could exist purely;<br />

a thing that could exist as thusness;
