Embedding a fire
detection system into an
oil tank farm in Libya

In October 2007, ESI was awarded its first international
project in Libya, North Africa. The client was Zueitina
Oil Company, a prestigious Oil & Gas company.
ESI teamed up with Autronica Fire Systems to offer a state-of-the-art fire detection system on
seventeen crude oil tanks at the Zueitina tank farm in Libya. The project also incorporates other
risk areas including warehouses, an administration building, kitchens and a communications
building. Fire suppression systems were also installed in a number of other important areas.
The system was based on a heat detection cable installed
around tanks that measured 90 meters in diameter. Amongst
these lies the largest oil storage tank in Africa. The new
system also included seven Oil & Gas standard fire control
panels linked over a dedicated fibre optic back bone.
With a project value of over €1 million, completion was carried out
in 18 months. Four kilometres of trench works were dug for the
detection cabling, more than 11 kilometres of heat detection cables
installed on the tank rim seals and over 400 fire devices (including
EX rated flame detectors) were installed. Also installed was a foam
deluge system for protection of the site’s chemical warehouses.
