New Science: illustrative examples
A long “nanoprobe” beamline will allow routine experiments that are not
feasible today. An outstanding example is the chemical imaging of biological
cells. To achieve this implies being able to scan the cell with a spot small with
respect to the cell dimensions and intense enough to collect the fluorescence.
A preliminary experiment has been performed at beamline ID19. Some of the
features required for a long nanoprobe beamline exist at this beamline, but
not, for instance, the extreme level of stability required. The image obtained
in this “tour de force” experiment shows the location and content of Pt in a
cancerous cell with a resolution of 0.3 µm. Indeed the detection, localisation,
quantification and determination of the chemical state of (metal) trace
elements in cells is of crucial importance for a broad range of biomedical
topics, which include brain diseases associated metabolism disorders, nanobio-technologies
and bacterial metabolism under extreme conditions. The
recent results obtained at 3 rd generation hard X-ray sources demonstrate
unequivocally the scientific potential of an optimised long nanoprobe
beamline for biomedical topics, as well as for applications in materials
science.
