<strong>European</strong> <strong>Synchrotron</strong> Radi<strong>at</strong>ion Facility Long-Term Str<strong>at</strong>egy 7 July 2006<br />

The document is laid out as follows: Section 2 of this report deals with <strong>the</strong> new and<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ive scientific areas to be addressed by <strong>the</strong> upgraded ESRF and summarises<br />

<strong>the</strong> current situ<strong>at</strong>ion of synchrotron radi<strong>at</strong>ion sources in Europe. Section 3 introduces<br />

<strong>the</strong> renewal programme for <strong>the</strong> X-ray source, followed in Section 4 by <strong>the</strong><br />

corresponding plans for <strong>the</strong> beamlines and scientific infrastructure. Section 5<br />

summarises <strong>the</strong> preliminary estim<strong>at</strong>es of costs and associ<strong>at</strong>ed staffing<br />

consider<strong>at</strong>ions. A summary table of <strong>European</strong> SR facilities is included as Annex 1<br />

and a report on discussions <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> ESRF Users’ Meeting in Feruary 2006 as Annex 2.<br />

Annex 3 includes preliminary consider<strong>at</strong>ions on new and up-graded beamlines.<br />
