One highly successful <strong>in</strong>itiative<br />

has been Imperial’s Native<br />

Internship Program, which was<br />

recently honored by <strong>the</strong> Alberta<br />

Chamber of Resources and <strong>the</strong><br />

Alberta M<strong>in</strong>istry of International,<br />

Intergovernmental and Aborig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Relations. The program provides<br />

24 months of paid on-<strong>the</strong>-job<br />

Graduates ga<strong>in</strong> valuable technical<br />

experience work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> field or<br />

“Imperial’s Native Internship<br />

who want to pursue technical<br />

careers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil and gas<br />

all of <strong>the</strong> graduates from this<br />

program, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g Aborig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

employment from 2.6 percent to<br />

10 percent of its total workforce.<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> says that <strong>the</strong> program<br />

is a w<strong>in</strong>-w<strong>in</strong> for Imperial.<br />

“Not only do <strong>the</strong> workers benefit,”<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> says, “but Imperial<br />

also benefits by ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g highly<br />

skilled employees to meet <strong>the</strong><br />

demand <strong>in</strong> our operations.”<br />

Experience as an example<br />

Mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> transition from<br />

some of <strong>the</strong> more isolated First<br />

Nation and Métis communities<br />

to work<strong>in</strong>g at a large oil <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

operation can be <strong>in</strong>timidat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Nobody understands this better<br />

than those who have<br />

experienced it.<br />

to new Aborig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>terns and<br />

hires. Coll<strong>in</strong>s notes <strong>the</strong> adjustment<br />

period can be hard on<br />

newcomers.<br />

“They want to give back<br />

to society. But if you take an<br />

Aborig<strong>in</strong>al person out of his or<br />

her lifestyle and culture and put<br />

that person <strong>in</strong> a corporate culture<br />

without some guidance, that <strong>in</strong>di-<br />

vidual could fail. Assistance<br />

and mentor<strong>in</strong>g can help.”<br />

“We show <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong><br />

ropes and give <strong>the</strong>m a shoulder<br />

to lean on,” adds Card<strong>in</strong>al. “We<br />

help <strong>the</strong>m get through those<br />

rocky times. I really th<strong>in</strong>k it helps<br />

reta<strong>in</strong> good employees – people<br />

who want to work and want to<br />

give back to <strong>the</strong> company and<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir communities. And it’s so<br />

excit<strong>in</strong>g to see <strong>the</strong>m succeed<br />

and become role models <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

communities.”<br />

Card<strong>in</strong>al and Coll<strong>in</strong>s also<br />

spend time <strong>in</strong> schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

First Nation and Métis settlements,<br />

educat<strong>in</strong>g students<br />

about opportunities at Imperial<br />

and elsewhere.<br />

“My key message to <strong>the</strong><br />

youth is that good th<strong>in</strong>gs will<br />

happen if you set your goals and<br />

put <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to action,” Card<strong>in</strong>al<br />

says. “I use myself and my job<br />

at Imperial as an example.”<br />
